Taittirīyopaniṣat Bhāṣyam (तैत्तिरीयोपनिषत् भाष्यम्)
Taittirīyopaniṣat 01.21
सत्यमिति सत्यवचा राथीतरः। तप इति तपोनित्यः पौरुशिष्टिः। स्वाध्यायप्रवचने एवेति नाको मौद्गल्यः। तद्धि तपस्तद्धि तपः ॥२१॥
satyam iti satyavacā rāthītaraḥ। tapa iti taponityaḥ pauruśiṣṭiḥ। svādhyāya-pravacane eva iti nāko maudgalyaḥ। tad dhi tapas tad dhi tapaḥ ॥21॥
[सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; इति (iti) - thus; सत्यवचा (satyavacā) - Satyavacā (name); राथीतरः (rāthītaraḥ) - Rāthītaraḥ (patronymic); तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; इति (iti) - thus; तपोनित्यः (taponityaḥ) - Taponityaḥ (name); पौरुशिष्टिः (pauruśiṣṭiḥ) - Pauruśiṣṭiḥ (patronymic); स्वाध्यायप्रवचने (svādhyāya-pravacane) - in study and teaching; एव (eva) - only; इति (iti) - thus; नाको (nāko) - Nāka (name); मौद्गल्यः (maudgalyaḥ) - Maudgalyaḥ (patronymic); तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]
Satyavacā Rāthītaraḥ, one who always speaks truth, said, "satyam", i.e. "truth". Taponityaḥ Pauruśiṣṭiḥ, one who is always engaged in austerity, said, "tapah", i.e. "austerity". Nāka Maudgalyaḥ said, "study and imparting knowledge alone". That indeed is austerity, that indeed is austerity.
Taittirīya Bhāshya 01.21
Truthfulness, self-study, imparting knowledge, and chanting of Vedic hymns - all are austerities. But he who, having thoroughly understood Lord Viṣṇu, explains and repeatedly remembers him, gets liberated. For him, nothing remains to be done.
"सत्ये तपसि वा चीर्णे सर्वकर्म कृतं भवेत्। स्वाध्याये च प्रवचने ह्यन्तर्भावो विशेषतः॥"
"satye tapasi vā cīrṇe sarvakarma kṛtaṃ bhavet। svādhyāye ca pravacane hyantarbhāvo viśeṣataḥ॥"
[सत्ये (satye) - in truth; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; वा (vā) - or; चीर्णे (cīrṇe) - having been performed; सर्वकर्म (sarvakarma) - all actions; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; स्वाध्याये (svādhyāye) - in self-study; च (ca) - and; प्रवचने (pravacane) - in teaching / imparting knowledge; हि (hi) - indeed; अन्तर्भावः (antarbhāvaḥ) - inclusion; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
"When truth and austerity are practiced, all actions are considered accomplished. Especially when it includes self-study and imparting knowledge."
इति च॥
iti ca॥
[इति (iti) - thus; in this way; च (ca) - and / as well;]
- stated thus as well.
"यं यं क्रतुमधीते तेन तेनास्येष्टं भवति।"
"yaṃ yaṃ kratum adhīte tena tenāsy eṣṭaṃ bhavati।"
[यं (yaṃ) - which; यं (yaṃ) - which; क्रतुम् (kratum) - sacrifice; अधीते (adhīte) - studies; तेन (tena) - by that; तेन (tena) - by that; अस्य (asya) - for him; इष्टम् (eṣṭam) - desired; भवति (bhavati) - becomes;]
"Whatever sacrifice one studies, that very thing becomes desired for him."
इति च श्रुतिः।
iti ca śrutiḥ।
[इति (iti) - thus; in this way; च (ca) - and; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - revelation; Veda;]
- stated thus by a Vedic statement.
"जप्येनैव तु संसिद्ध्येत् ब्राह्मणो नात्रसंशयः। कुर्यादन्यन्न वा कुर्यात् मैत्रो ब्राह्मण उच्यते॥"
"japyenaiva tu saṁsiddhyet brāhmaṇo nātra-saṁśayaḥ। kuryād anyan na vā kuryāt maitro brāhmaṇa ucyate॥"
[जप्येन (japyena) - by repeated muttering; एव (eva) - indeed; only; तु (tu) - but; however; संसिद्ध्येत् (saṁsiddhyet) - would attain perfection; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; a member of the priestly class; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; in this matter; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; अन्यत् (anyat) - other (thing); न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; मैत्रः (maitraḥ) - friendly; of friendship / comapssionate; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; a member of the priestly class; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; is said;]
"A brāhmaṇa attains perfection solely through repeated chanting (of mantras), there is no doubt about this. Whether he performs other actions or not, he is still called a compassionate brāhmaṇa."
इति भारते॥
iti bhārate॥
[इति (iti) - thus; in this manner; भारते (bhārate) - in the Bhārata;]
- stated thus, in the Mahabhārata.
"सम्यग् ज्ञात्वा तु यो विष्णुं व्याख्यायीत जपेत च। न तस्य किंङ्चिदकृतं कर्तव्यं मुच्यते च सः॥"
samyag jñātvā tu yo viṣṇuṃ vyākhyāyīta japeta ca। na tasya kiṃñcid akṛtaṃ kartavyaṃ mucyate ca saḥ॥
[सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; thoroughly; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Lord Viṣṇu; (the deity) व्याख्यायीत (vyākhyāyīta) - should explain; जपेत् (japet) - should recite; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - of him; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अकृतम् (akṛtam) - not done; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is released; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
"But he who, having thoroughly understood Lord Viṣṇu, explains and repeatedly remembers, for him nothing remains to be done; he is liberated."
इति कर्मतत्त्वे।
iti karmatatve।
[इति (iti) - thus; in this manner; कर्मतत्त्वे (karmatatve) - in the principle of action;]

बहुचित्रजगद्बहुधाकरणात् परशक्तिरनन्तगुणः परमः ।
सुखरूपममुष्य पदं परमं स्मरतस्तु भविष्यति तत्सततम् ॥
"The one who has created this variegated vast universe with varied forms has infinite power and is of infinite auspicious qualities. He certainly bestows the highest state of bliss to those who meditate on his ever happy essence." -Dwādasha stōtra 4.3
