B.G 3.34
iṁdriyasyēṁdriyasyārthē rāgadvēṣau vyavasthitau। tayōrna vaśamāgacchēt tau hyasya paripanthinau ॥34॥
iṁdriyasya = from the Indriyas; iṁdriyasya = from the Indriyas; arthē = the objects; rāga = attachment; dvēṣau = aversion; vyavasthitau = are established;। tayōḥ = in them; na = not; vaśam = under their sway; āgacchēt = should come; tau = those two; hi = indeed; asya = of these; paripanthinau = obstacles;॥]
By senses dwelling on sense objects, attachement and aversion necessarily arise. Let not one come under the sway of these two. Indeed, they are obstacles.
Gīta Bhāshya 3.34
It is possible to alter the past impressions with intense effort.
tathāpi śaktitō nigrahaḥ kāryaḥ। nigrahāt sadyaḥ prayōjanābhāvē'pi bhavatyēva atiprayatnataḥ ityāśayavānāha - iṁdriyasyēti॥
[tathāpi = even then; śaktitō = as per one's capacity; nigrahaḥ = restraining; kāryaḥ = is to be performed;। nigrahāt = from restraining; sadyaḥ = immediate; prayōjanābhāvē'pi = even in the absence of purpose; bhavatyēva = happens, indeed; atiprayatnataḥ = with intense effort; ityāśayavānāha = thus, having intention, it is said; - iṁdriyasyēti = 'iṁdriyasyē' verse;॥]
Even then (though driven by prakrti), one must pursue restraining (of Indriyas) as per one's capacity. Even though it may not have immediate purpose, restraining with an intense effort indeed yields results. With this intention it is said - 'iṁdriyasyē', i.e. 'from Indriyas', verse.
tathā hi uktam-
[tathā = therefore; hi = only/particularly; uktam = it is said;]
Therefore, it is specifically said:
"संस्कारो बलवानेव ब्रह्माद्या अपि तद्वशाः। तथापि सोऽन्यथाकर्तुं शक्यतेऽतिप्रयत्नतः॥"
"saṁskārō balavānēva brahmādyā api tadvaśāḥ। tathāpi sō'nyathākartuṁ śakyatē'tiprayatnataḥ॥"
["saṁskārō = past impressions; balavānēva = powerful, as if; brahmādyā = celestial beings; api = even; tadvaśāḥ = under its influence;। tathāpi = nevertheless; sō'nyathākartuṁ = that, altered; śakyatē'tiprayatnataḥ = is possible; with intense effort;]
"The past impressions are so powerful that even the celestial beings come under its sway. Nevertheless, with intense effort, it is possible to alter its impact.
