Shrī Harivāyustutiḥ
Preface
Shrī Harivāyustutiḥ
The auspicious praise dedicated to Lord Hari and Vayu.
Now begins the glorious praise of the nails.
May the outstretched, excellent nails of the glorious Lion-faced Lord protect us — nails which, each like a thunderbolt, are exceedingly skilled at splitting even mountain-like elephant temples; which tore apart and cast far away the powerful, rut-maddened, elephant-like enemy of Indra; which completely destroy darkness, and are meditated upon by the hosts of gods with minds spread wide in tranquillity.
O Lord of Lakshmi, I perceive that there is nothing equal to you in all directions. I observe an excellent object revered from a distance, representing the eighth essence of iron. The heap of anger, emerging from the adept eye's crooked corner, sparkles like a firefly, consuming the multitude of Brahma, Lord, and Indra.
Now begins the auspicious praise of Lord Hari and Vayu.
May the dust from the bright feet of the revered Anandatirtha, who is devoted to the feet of Vishnu and possesses the highest virtues, purify us. Where Sharada, the esteemed leader of speech in the three worlds, with a smile as auspicious as the autumn moonlight, carried the burden of love, illuminating all directions.
The longing and dull uproar, known for its speed and constant service, has increased. The wise self-knowledge has shaken the blind darkness, like a crown of jewels in a row of names. Immersed in the overflow of devotion, the manifestation with sound is rubbing. The excellent feet, risen from the seat, are colored with the yellowish dust of gold, spreading in all directions.
I am capable of praising the qualities that remove the obstacles of birth, disease, imposition, obstruction, and separation, and offer the foremost gifts of long-lasting joyful consciousness and blissful abundance, even amidst the deluded minds of envious defamers and demons in the darkness of want.
In this age of Kali, where impurity prevails, the path of knowledge is revealed by the incarnation of the wind god, Madhva, who is perfected by mantra. Today, he is worshipped by leaders and celestial beings like the moon, Indra, Rudra, the sun, jewels, and serpents. He is the savior and the supreme refuge for those who have fallen, offering them a state free from calamities.
May the god of wind, Vayu Deva, who is as fierce as rising lightning and whose brilliance fills the world, who possesses a formidable arm and shines with the sun's splendour, strong and great, uplifted in valour with his foremost mace, grant wisdom here to Arni, the best of ascetics and a beneficial ornament to the earth.
May the compassionate one, who eternally calms the heat of the world, full of affectionate smiles like water, whose rising knowledge is like a forest in the sky filled with rays of shining jewels, who is the hope above the mark of Śrīvatsa, and who resides in a more simple and glorious blissful sacred place, split the ocean of milk to remove your undesired abundant prosperity.
This salutation is firmly bound on the head as your bond noose. In the field, the supporter of happiness enjoys on earth, destined for the future creator and the sky-bearer. You continuously grant at the pair of feet, alas, the suffering of those who partake. Our singular devotion is to the Lord, the uplifted Mādhava and Vāyu.
With clouds and heat in all directions, the bright light and fearless sky, the abundant glory of the mountains. The shining earth indeed, the abode of beings, also O Lord, became indivisible and brown. By which your confusion and illusion may intensely delude like a brown one, supporter of hopes. The delusion of the forest fire's light, thus fear towards O earth of the perishing, in the illusion of beggars.
Those who worship this state, adored by the faces of gods and good people, shine with brilliance, accompanied by moving companions and fans, in beautiful attire. In Vaikuntha, they are attached to the neck, steady and pure, with shining beauty and youthful play. They are full of grace, beloved, with fullness of bosom, easily obtaining embrace and intense joy.
The gentle winds, born of joy, indeed bring the delightful descent of jasmine and coral trees. Bearing joys, with soft steps and joyful songs, the beautiful women, worshipped by groups, are like the liberated moon, snowy, and filled with love. In this place, continuously rising, is the joyful god, Mukunda, served by the serpent king and the lord of gods.
The intense brilliance, fierce and heated, manifests with crackling sounds from collisions. Lightning, enveloped with sparks, scatters in multitudes, boiling and afflicting limbs. Deeply falling into darkness, here and there, by servants in muddy places, these heavy clouds indeed torment the enemies of the Lord, who are the learned ones.
In this place, dedicated to the long meditation on the auspicious feet of Hari by our teachers, you have surrendered to the service of your own words, holding the battlefield. He who remains indifferent sits in foolishness, unable to overcome suffering. How can one not dwell in almost bliss, constantly amidst fivefold and extreme hardships?
Your enemies, emaciated by hunger, with rough bodies, sharp teeth and nails, and disturbed eyes, are submerged in a dark well. They are attacked by birds with razor-sharp beaks, leaving their limbs wounded. They are surrounded by pus, blood, urine, and excrement, filled with worms. In this state, they are momentarily thrown by powerful weapons, like thunderbolts, by groups of leeches.
O mother, O wind, father-like teacher, brother, friend, relative, master, all-pervading soul, who is ageless and decays birth, death, and diseases, grant devotion in Govinda, O Lord, O Bhagavan, who is strengthened and created unwavering, steady, of good qualities, great, and eternal, O Asudeva.
Due to Vishnu's supreme excellence and all-encompassing qualities, the highest devotion is established. United with Sri and Dhara, and with the nature of a family among servants, he establishes the hierarchy of Brahma, Vayu, Garuda, Ananta, Rudra, Indra, and others, and clearly protects the study of scriptures and hierarchy always. Vayu, our teacher, is him.
O teacher, you indeed bring happiness to those who are eligible for liberation due to their level of fitness. You instill confusion in the minds of those who are eternally bound, dwelling in heaven, hell, and earth. Known as darkness and ignorance, you cause immense suffering in the absence of true knowledge. Thus, by the command of Vishnu, we hear countless Vedas, histories, and other scriptures.
I bow to Hanuman, the revered great hero with strong arms, known as your foremost incarnation, who is here with many virtues like celibacy, burning away the sins and delusions of the embodied, and who still desires great devotion to Rama even today.
Before fifty thousand leagues, you were separated as a great mountain. As long as you intended to bring the life-giving first medicine treasure to Lanka, you saw yourself leaping and uprooting the mountain, taking it, and going in the sky. Bowed at Rama's feet, the world saw you in a moment.
After being playfully thrown a hundred yojanas by you, O incomparable one, he was so high and wide, even the bamboo and stones were affected. With a distracted mind, you caused the firm pieces and rock net connection to be lost. The cut mark remained as before. Salutations to the skill of your monkey form.
Upon witnessing the splintered gold and the heap of rubbed bones of the lord of the seen, people became doubtful, as if a lake had manifested on the bank of the golden mountain, crushed. In battle, the enemy of Ravana, dear and skillful in dance, desired to bestow his fist. What is not desired by me, he is your eight-footed mat, trembling in crores, shining like wood.
By the command of the goddess, Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu protect and remove obstacles. Today, in service, the compassionate one with arms invoked the name of Rama, Krishna. In the supreme position, difficult to attain, placing incomparable wisdom in the palm of the hand, blessed. Expanding again, abundant affection blossomed, the lotus-eyed one observes.
The destroyer of obstacles, with abundant strength, did not lament the first destruction of the crane. Compassionate bonds of Brahmins support life and happiness for the people of one wheel. To him, the prince, those gods offer salutations to the lord of the Kuru dynasty. What of the afflicted, first then and who by bowing pierced.
O Viṣṇu, you crushed Jarāsandha's body joints with great effort in battle, subduing the enemy lord like an animal in your sacrifice. As long as the entire sacrificial offering was visible, you performed austerities with satisfaction. What then, O Lord, was said during the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices?
With a loud laugh, you destroy your enemy, rising with strong arms, a destroyer of many armies, very skilled, whose highest qualities are for listening. The joyful sage himself spoke then to speak, O revered one, capable, I surrender to the lotus feet of you both.
The goddess of speech, known for her good knowledge and wealth-giving nature, dispels ignorance and sleep with the force of a swift wind. She skillfully churns the ocean of knowledge at the foot of creation. Draupadi, from the wife of Rudra, overflowing with auspiciousness, may she hold your beloved by the command of ancient Bhima.
Salutations to you, who were desirous of serving in the birth of the Kuru dynasty, by the Kshatriya and Brahmin, by Brahma, by the nourished, by the form of mind-pleasure, by the abode of Krishna's name, by the giver of fearlessness, especially by the expression of subjects, by both, by those, to the protectors, to the lotus-eyed.
As Bhima went on the path for the Saugandhika flower, he encountered the tail of Hanuman's monkey and found himself unable to lift it, being frightened by its immense strength. This was a mere play by Śrīmadānandatīrtha, who is of complete knowledge and strength, and it delighted the wise while deluding those who are envious.
You swiftly destroyed the pride and anger of many arrogant enemies with your mace, discerning truth from falsehood in their words, and offered a flower to your beloved. Salutations to the life-giver.
The lord, who is crooked-minded and controlled by anger, like a worm with a jewel, made the earth's cycle difficult for the good and the living, considering the separation from Vishnu's qualities.
According to that imagination, respected by some and released by others, the doctrine 'I am Brahman, I am without qualities, this is false' is indeed heretical. Such fallacious reasoning spreads like a net, capable of burning the poisonous tree. The fire, adorned with a garland of flames, conquers the wind. This is your third incarnation.
Crying out in despair, filled with fear and helplessness, cut off by their own desires. Destroying the country, alas, the evil-minded quickly face destruction and the state of hope. Running with obscene conduct, false oaths, and curses, the auspicious and peaceful heroes. In the roar of your explanation like a lion, they were immediately seen as jackals in me.
In all three incarnations, though mercilessly harmed by enemies, you remain unchanged, omniscient, omnipotent, full of virtues, bold in form, pure, and free-willed. You bring joy to the good people, O Lord. What is surprising in this? You are the protector whose three abodes have the world under control, with servants like Shankara.
When will I see the beautiful, gentle smile, soft and sweet melodious speech like a stream of nectar, calming the overflow of happiness in the minds and eyes of good people, and experience the great bliss here, like a pilgrimage to eternal joy, reflected in the glorious moon-like face, which is not yet risen from afar?
The ancient wise ones, with a virtuous accumulation, are more skillful by conduct and have charming minds. They delight in very high knowledge and the words they hear, with some rising. Their explanations excavate sorrow for a long time, and they are appropriate great teachers engaged in thought. They are wonderful true scripture makers, serving as a refuge, and they make us hear something.
Seated on a throne adorned with jewels, you shine with the light of beautiful and lustrous gems. The future Brahman, you illuminate your own realm. The Vedic sciences indeed serve you, and beings of good conduct and character shine with fragrance and song. In every assembly of gods, O Lord, your truth is profoundly present among the celestial maidens.
With eternal compassion, seeing the helpless creatures immersed in the ocean of birth, death, hell, and other sufferings, you all prayed for the Lord, who sleeps on the ocean, to manifest in the form of pure consciousness in Satyavati, the great sage, for he is not indeed a material body.
I bow daily with devotion to Vyasa, the greatest teacher and god of gods, who, by your grace, immediately composed the entire meaning of all Vedas for the benefit of the world, like a heap of jewels disordered by the blind.
The command placed by others on the head, surrounded by rays on the peak of the crown, Krishna's unwearied action performed after crossing from the lake by the assembly of gods. Having arrived on the earth, O great one, you accomplished the difficult task of writing the commentary on the Brahma Sutras, which is difficult to understand, expounded with brilliance, and spoken by the wise with logic.
In the pure land named Raupyapīṭha, which is the abode of the twice-born, there was a Brahmin of the Madhyageha family. The king of ascetics, having reached Badarī again and having bowed to Krishna, properly composed commentaries and spread the light of Bharata.
I offer my salutations to you, who is perfect and worshipped daily with great reverence by the assemblies of gods. I bow to the lord of devotees, to prosperity, and to the ever-revered Ananda Tirtha. I bow to the Ganges, the pure river, where the abundant waters meet. With devotion, I bow to the Lord, who destroys the fear of worldly existence and brings joy to the virtuous.
Keshavananda Tirtha, known as the son of the sage Subrahmanya, greatly devoted to the revered lotus feet, composed a praise for Hari and Aryadeva. Through the conduct of your feet, adorned with a beautiful garland of words, those who worship and bow down with great virtues attain liberation and proceed on their path.
Thus ends the revered Hari Vayu Stuti composed by the esteemed scholar and teacher Trivikrama Panditacharya.
Now begins the glorious praise of the nails.
May the mighty elephants, intoxicated and powerful, protect us. They are like jars, each resembling thunderbolts, skilled in splitting high mountains. With their beautiful nails, they tear enemies apart from afar, dispelling darkness and spreading peace, contemplated by the groups of gods with their minds.
I see the lord of Lakshmi, who, considering everything around, has no equal. From afar, I perceive an excellent entity worshipped, the eighth essence of iron. It is a heap of anger, with capable eyes and a crooked edge, where fire arises and shines. Like a firefly, it is covered with ashes, resembling heaps of Brahma, Isha, and Indra.
Thus ends the complete praise of Lord Narasimha's nails, composed by the revered teacher Ānandatīrtha.
May this be an offering to Lord Krishna, who embodies the essence of Sarasvati and Rama, and is the chief life force.
