Bhagavad Gīta Bhāshya and Tātparya
B.G 10.37
वृष्णीनां वासुदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवानां धनञ्जयः। मुनीनामप्यहं व्यासः कवीनामुशना कविः ॥३७॥
vṛṣṇīnāṁ vāsudevo'smi pāṇḍavānāṁ dhanañjayaḥ. munīnāmapyahaṁ vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśanā kaviḥ ॥37॥
[वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - among the Vṛṣṇis; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa); अस्मि (asmi) - I am; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - among the Pāṇḍavas; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). मुनीनाम् (munīnām) - among sages; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; कवीनाम् (kavīnām) - among poets; उशनाः (uśanāḥ) - Uśanā (Śukrācārya); कविः (kaviḥ) - the seer or poet.]
Among the Vṛṣṇis, I am Vāsudeva; among the Pāṇḍavas, I am Dhanañjaya. Among sages, I am Vyāsa; among poets, I am Uśanā the seer.
Gīta Bhāshya 10.37
Vāsu - one who covers all, permeates all, and dwells everywhere; Vyāsa - one who indeed is distinct (viśiṣṭaḥ) from all, from every direction or He is 'Vi' as he dispels darkness, and 'asa', breathes everywhere.
आच्छादयति सर्वं वासयति वसति च सर्वत्र इति वासुः।
ācchādayati sarvaṁ vāsayati vasati ca sarvatra iti vāsuḥ
[आच्छादयति (ācchādayati) - covers; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; वासयति (vāsayati) - permeates; वसति (vasati) - dwells; च (ca) - and; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; इति (iti) - thus; वासुः (vāsuḥ) - one who is called Vāsu]
He who covers all, permeates all, and dwells everywhere — he is called Vāsu.
"देवशब्दार्थ उक्तः पुरस्तात्। छादयामि जगद्विशम् भूत्वा सूर्य इवांशुभिः। सर्वभूताधिवासश्च वासुदेवस्ततोस्म्यहम्॥"
"deva-śabda-artha uktaḥ purastāt. chādayāmi jagat-viśam bhūtvā sūrya iva āṁśubhiḥ. sarva-bhūta-adhivāsaś-ca vāsudevaḥ tataḥ asmi aham"
[देवशब्दार्थः (deva-śabda-arthaḥ) - the meaning of the word 'deva'; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - has been stated; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - earlier. छादयामि (chādayāmi) - I cover; जगत्-विशम् (jagat-viśam) - the whole universe; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; इव (iva) - like; अंशुभिः (āṁśubhiḥ) - with rays. सर्वभूत-अधिवासः (sarva-bhūta-adhivāsaḥ) - the indweller of all beings; च (ca) - and; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अहम् (aham) - I]
The meaning of the word "Deva" has been stated earlier: "I pervade the world like the sun with its rays, and I dwell in all beings — therefore, I am called Vāsudeva."
इति मोक्षधर्मे।
iti mokṣa-dharme
- stated thus in the Mokṣa-dharma section.
विशिष्टः सर्वस्मात् असमन्तात् स एव इति व्यासः। तथाच अग्निवेश्यशाखायाम्-
viśiṣṭaḥ sarvasmāt asamantāt sa eva iti vyāsaḥ. tathā ca agniveśya-śākhāyām
[विशिष्टः (viśiṣṭaḥ) - distinct; सर्वस्मात् (sarvasmāt) - from everything; असमन्तात् (asamantāt) - from all directions; सः (saḥ) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa. तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; अग्निवेश्यशाखायाम् (agniveśya-śākhāyām) - in the branch of Agniveśya]
The Vyāsa is one who indeed is distinct (viśiṣṭaḥ) from all, from every direction. Stated so, also in the Agniveśya branch:
"स व्यासो वीति तमब्वै विः सोऽधस्तात् स उत्तरतः स पश्चात् स पूर्वस्मात् स दक्षिणतः स उत्तरतः इति॥"
"sa vyāsaḥ vīti tamaḥ abvai viḥ saḥ adhaḥ-tāt saḥ uttara-taḥ saḥ paścāt saḥ pūrva-smāt saḥ dakṣiṇa-taḥ saḥ uttara-taḥ iti"
[सः (saḥ) - he; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; वीति (vīti) - moves; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; अब्वै (abvai) - dispels; विः (viḥ) - breathes forth; सः (saḥ) - he; अधस्तात् (adhaḥtāt) - below; सः (saḥ) - he; उत्तरतः (uttarataḥ) - in the north; सः (saḥ) - he; पश्चात् (paścāt) - behind; सः (saḥ) - he; पूर्वस्मात् (pūrvasmāt) - from the east; सः (saḥ) - he; दक्षिणतः (dakṣiṇataḥ) - from the south; सः (saḥ) - he; उत्तरतः (uttarataḥ) - from the north; इति (iti) - thus]
"He is called 'Vyāsa' as He is 'Vi', who dispels darkness, and 'asa', breathes everywhere: below, in the north, behind, in the east, in the south, and in the north — thus it is said."

बहुचित्रजगद्बहुधाकरणात् परशक्तिरनन्तगुणः परमः ।
सुखरूपममुष्य पदं परमं स्मरतस्तु भविष्यति तत्सततम् ॥
"The one who has created this variegated vast universe with varied forms has infinite power and is of infinite auspicious qualities. He certainly bestows the highest state of bliss to those who meditate on his ever happy essence." -Dwādasha stōtra 4.3
