B.G 18.23
नियतं सङ्गरहितमरागद्वेषतः कृतम्। अफलप्रेप्सुना कर्म यत्तत् सात्त्विकमुच्यते ॥२३॥
niyataṁ saṅgarahitam arāgadveṣataḥ kṛtam। aphalaprepsunā karma yat tat sāttvikam ucyate ॥23॥
[नियतं (niyatam) - regulated; सङ्गरहितम् (saṅgarahitam) - free from attachment; अरागद्वेषतः (arāgadveṣataḥ) - without passion and hatred; कृतम् (kṛtam) - performed; अफलप्रेप्सुना (aphalaprepsunā) - without desire for results; कर्म (karma) - action; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; सात्त्विकम् (sāttvikam) - in the mode of goodness; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
An action that is regulated and free from attachment, performed without passion or hatred, and without desire for results, is considered to be in the mode of 'sāttvik', i.e. goodness.
Gīta Tātparya 18.23
Understanding the supreme nature of Lord Vishnu, performing all actions as an offering to the Lord is a means to liberation. While non-performance leads to sin.
"मयि सर्वाणि कर्माणि संन्यस्याध्यात्मचेतसा" इत्युक्त्वा "ये मे मतम्", "ये त्वेतत्" इति च तस्य मोक्षसाधनत्वस्याकरणे प्रत्यवायस्य चोक्तेर्भगवदर्पितत्वेन सर्वकर्मकरणं तस्य विष्णोः सर्वपरमत्वज्ञानं च नियतमेवेति ज्ञायते।
"mayi sarvāṇi karmāṇi saṃnyasyādhyātmacetasā" ityuktvā "ye me matam", "ye tvetat" iti ca tasya mokṣasādhanatvasyākaraṇe pratyavāyasya cokterbhagavadarpitatvena sarvakarmakaraṇaṃ tasya viṣṇoḥ sarvaparamatvajñānaṃ ca niyatameveti jñāyate।
[मयि (mayi) - in me; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; संन्यस्य (saṃnyasya) - renouncing; अध्यात्मचेतसा (adhyātmacetasā) - with a mind absorbed in the self; इत्युक्त्वा (ityuktvā) - having said thus; ये (ye) - those who; मे (me) - my; मतम् (matam) - opinion; ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; एतत् (etat) - this; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - his; मोक्षसाधनत्वस्य (mokṣasādhanatvasya) - of being a means to liberation; अकरणे (akaraṇe) - in non-performance; प्रत्यवायस्य (pratyavāyasya) - of sin; च (ca) - and; उक्तेः (ukteḥ) - from the statement; भगवदर्पितत्वेन (bhagavadarpitatvena) - by offering to the Lord; सर्वकर्मकरणं (sarvakarmakaraṇaṃ) - performing all actions; तस्य (tasya) - his; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Vishnu; सर्वपरमत्वज्ञानं (sarvaparamatvajñānaṃ) - knowledge of the supreme being of all; च (ca) - and; नियतमेव (niyatameva) - certainly; इति (iti) - thus; ज्ञायते (jñāyate) - is known;]
"Renouncing all actions in me with a mind absorbed in the self" (3.30), "Those are my opinion" (3.31), "But those who" (3.32) - these statements conveys that understanding the supreme nature of Lord Vishnu, ensures that performing all actions as an offering to the Lord is a means to liberation, while non-performance leads to sin.
"अध्यात्मचेतसा" इत्युक्तत्वात् तत्स्वरूपयाथार्थ्यज्ञानादि। "ये तु सर्वाणि" इत्यस्मिन् श्लोकेध्यात्मचेतस्त्वस्य "मत्पराः अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायन्तः" इति व्याख्यातत्वात्।
"adhyātmacetasā" ityuktatvāt tatsvarūpayāthārthyajñānādi। "ye tu sarvāṇi" ityasmin ślokédhyātmacetastvasya "matparāḥ ananyenaiva yogena māṃ dhyāyantaḥ" iti vyākhyātatvāt।
[अध्यात्मचेतसा (adhyātmacetasā) - with a mind absorbed in the self; इत्युक्तत्वात् (ityuktatvāt) - because it is said; तत्स्वरूपयाथार्थ्यज्ञानादि (tatsvarūpayāthārthyajñānādi) - knowledge of the true nature of that; ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; इत्यस्मिन् (ityasmin) - in this; श्लोके (śloke) - verse; अध्यात्मचेतस्त्वस्य (adhyātmacetastvasya) - of the state of mind absorbed in the self; मत्पराः (matparāḥ) - devoted to me; अनन्येनैव (ananyenaiva) - with undivided; योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; मां (māṃ) - me; ध्यायन्तः (dhyāyantaḥ) - meditating; इति (iti) - thus; व्याख्यातत्वात् (vyākhyātatvāt) - because it is explained;]
"One who surrenders his 'atman' to Bhagavan," (3.30) stating thus it is conveyed true knowledge is understanding the essence of true principles. The verse, "those who, but all," (12.6) referring to the state of mind absorbed in the Lord, "devoted to me, meditating on me with undivided yoga," (12.6) as it is explained.
एवं सर्वमपि भगवद्भक्तियुक्तमेव सात्त्विकम्॥
evaṃ sarvamapi bhagavadbhaktiyuktameva sāttvikam॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अपि (api) - also; भगवत् (bhagavat) - of the Lord; भक्ति (bhakti) - devotion; युक्तम् (yuktam) - endowed; एव (eva) - indeed; सात्त्विकम् (sāttvikam) - pure;]
Thus, everything associated with devotion to the Lord is considered 'sāttvik'.
