B.G 17.08
आयुःसत्त्वबलारोग्यसुखप्रीतिविवर्धनाः। रस्या स्निग्धाः स्थिरा हृद्या आहाराः सात्त्विकप्रियाः ॥८॥
āyuḥsattvabalārogyasukhaprītivivardhanāḥ। rasyā snigdhāḥ sthirā hṛdyā āhārāḥ sāttvikapriyāḥ ॥8॥
[आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; सत्त्व (sattva) - purity; बल (bala) - strength; आरोग्य (ārogya) - health; सुख (sukha) - happiness; प्रीति (prīti) - love; विवर्धनाः (vivardhanāḥ) - increasing; रस्या (rasyā) - juicy; स्निग्धाः (snigdhāḥ) - unctuous; स्थिरा (sthirā) - stable; हृद्या (hṛdyā) - pleasing; आहाराः (āhārāḥ) - foods; सात्त्विक (sāttvika) - pure; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear;]
(Foods that are juicy, unctuous, stable, and pleasing, increase life, purity, strength, health, happiness, and love, and are dear to the pure.)
Foods that are juicy, nourishing, stable, and pleasing enhance life, purity, strength, health, happiness, and affection, and are favoured by those who are pure.
Gīta Bhāshya 17.08
'prītiḥ' i.e. loved; 'hṛdyatvaṃ' i.e. pleasant to look at; 'sthira' i.e. stable, the one that takes longer to digest.
प्रीतिः अनन्तरिका। हृद्यत्वं दर्शने। स्थिराश्च न तदैव पक्वा भवन्ति। तथाहि आज्यादयः ॥८॥
prītiḥ anantarikā। hṛdyatvaṃ darśane। sthirāśca na tadaiva pakvā bhavanti। tathāhi ājyādayaḥ ॥8॥
[प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - loved; अनन्तरिका (anantarikā) - immediate; हृद्यत्वं (hṛdyatvaṃ) - pleasantness; दर्शने (darśane) - in seeing; स्थिराः (sthirāḥ) - stable; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; तदैव (tadaiva) - then itself; पक्वा (pakvā) - ripe; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; तथाहि (tathāhi) - thus; आज्यादयः (ājyādayaḥ) - ghee, etc.;]
The food that is 'prītiḥ' i.e. loved, is the feeling that arises immediately. 'hṛdyatvaṃ' i.e. pleasant to look at. The food that is 'sthira' i.e. stable, is the one that takes longer to digest, like ghee and other substances.
Gīta Tātparya 17.08
'sthira' - those that are stable; 'hṛdyaṃ' - pleasing afterwards; 'priyaṃ' - providing immediate happiness; 'sukhadaṃ' - long-lasting happiness; 'rasyā' - that which gives happiness after practicing. Even those pungent in taste are considered sattvic due to their health benefits.
स्थिराः स्थिरगुणाः घृतादयः। कट्वादीनामपि आरोग्यरसाद्यर्थत्वेन सात्त्विकत्वमेव। रस्यादीनामपि राजसत्वमनारोग्याहेतुत्वे।

[स्थिराः (sthirāḥ) - stable; स्थिरगुणाः (sthiraguṇāḥ) - having stable qualities; घृतादयः (ghṛtādayaḥ) - ghee and others; कट्वादीनाम् (kaṭvādīnām) - of pungent and others; अपि (api) - also; आरोग्यरसाद्यर्थत्वेन (ārogyarasādyarthatvena) - for the purpose of health and taste; सात्त्विकत्वम् (sāttvikatvam) - sattvic nature; एव (eva) - only; रस्यादीनाम् (rasyādīnām) - of juicy and others; अपि (api) - also; राजसत्वम् (rājasatvam) - rajasic nature; अनारोग्याहेतुत्वे (anārogyāhetutve) - cause of ill health;]
Food that is 'sthira' i.e. stable, are those that have stable qualities like ghee. Even those pungent in taste are considered sattvic due to their health benefits. In contrast, juicy substances are seen as rajasic, potentially leading to ill health.
"दुःखशोकामयप्रदाः"
"duḥkhaśokāmayapradāḥ"
[दुःख (duḥkha) - sorrow; शोक (śoka) - grief; आमय (āmaya) - disease; प्रदाः (pradāḥ) - givers;]
"They are the givers of sorrow, grief, and disease."

सत्त्वं साधुभावः। भवति हि सोऽपि शुच्यन्नात्।
sattvaṁ sādhubhāvaḥ। bhavati hi so'pi śucyannāt।
[सत्त्वं (sattvaṁ) - goodness; साधुभावः (sādhu-bhāvaḥ) - virtuous nature; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; शुच्यन्नात् (śucyannāt) - from pure food;]
Those foods with 'sattva' i.e. goodness, cause a virtuous nature. Indeed, he becomes so from consuming pure food.
"हृद्यं पश्चान्मनोहारि प्रियं तत्कालसौख्यदम्। सुखदं तु दीर्घसुखदं रस्यमभ्यास सौख्यदम्॥"
"hṛdyaṃ paścānmanohāri priyaṃ tatkālasaukhyadam। sukhadaṃ tu dīrghasukhadaṃ rasyamabhyāsa saukhyadam॥"
[हृद्यं (hṛdyaṃ) - pleasing; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; मनोहारि (manohāri) - captivating; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; तत्काल (tatkāla) - immediate; सौख्यदम् (saukhyadam) - giving happiness; सुखदं (sukhadaṃ) - pleasant; तु (tu) - but; दीर्घ (dīrgha) - long-lasting; सुखदं (sukhadaṃ) - giving happiness; रस्यम् (rasyam) - enjoyable; अभ्यास (abhyāsa) - practice; सौख्यदम् (saukhyadam) - giving happiness;]
(Pleasing afterwards, captivating, dear, giving immediate happiness. Pleasant but long-lasting happiness, enjoyable practice giving happiness.)
