Chapter Three - Kuru bhuṅkṣva ca (तृतीयोध्यायः - कुरु भुङ्क्ष्व च)
कुरु भुङ्क्ष्व च कर्म निजं नियतं हरिपादविनम्रधिया सततम्। हरिरेव परो हरिरेव गुरुः हरिरेव जगत्पितृमातृगतिः ॥१॥
kuru bhuṅkṣva ca karma nijaṁ niyataṁ haripādavinamradhiyā satatam। harirēva parō harirēva guruḥ harirēva jagatpitr̥mātr̥gatiḥ ॥1॥
[कुरु (kuru) - perform; भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - experience; च (ca) - and; कर्म (karma) - karma; निजम् (nijam) - your own; नियतम् (niyatam) - allotted; हरि-पाद-विनम्र-धिया (hari-pāda-vinamra-dhiyā) - with your mind bowed at Hari’s feet; सततम् (satatam) - always; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; एव (ēva) - alone; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; एव (ēva) - alone; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; एव (ēva) - alone; जगत्-पितृ-मातृ-गतिः (jagat-pitr̥-mātr̥-gatiḥ) - the world’s father, mother, and refuge;]
Always perform and experience your own allotted karma with your mind bowed at Hari’s feet. Hari alone is supreme; Hari alone is the teacher; Hari alone is the father, mother, and refuge of the world. (1)

न ततोस्त्परं जगतीड्यतमं परमात् परतः पुरुषोत्तमतः। तदलं बहुलोकविचिन्तनया प्रवणं कुरु मानसमीशपदे ॥२॥
na tatōstparaṁ jagatīḍyatamaṁ paramāt parataḥ puruṣōttamataḥ। tadalaṁ bahulōkavicintanayā pravaṇaṁ kuru mānasamīśapadē ॥2॥
[न (na) - nothing; ततः + अस्ति (tataḥ + asti) - is higher than him; परम् (param) - higher; जगति + ईड्यतमम् (jagati + īḍyatamam) - more worthy of praise in the world; परमात् (paramāt) - beyond the Supreme; परतः (parataḥ) - further beyond; पुरुषोत्तमतः (puruṣōttamataḥ) - than Puruṣottama; तत् + अलम् (tat + alam) - therefore enough; बहु-लोक-विचिन्तनया (bahu-lōka-vicintanayā) - of contemplating many worlds; प्रवणम् (pravaṇam) - inclined; कुरु (kuru) - make; मानसम् (mānasam) - your mind; ईश-पदे (īśa-padē) - toward the Lord’s feet;]
There is nothing higher than him or more worthy of praise in the world—nothing beyond the Supreme, nothing higher than Puruṣottama. Therefore, enough of contemplating many worlds; set your mind upon the Lord’s feet. (2)

यततोपि हरेः पदसंस्मरणे सकलं ह्यघमाशु लयं व्रजति। स्मरतस्तु विमुक्तिपदं परमं स्फुटमेष्यति तत्किमपाक्रियते ॥३॥
yatatōpi harēḥ padasaṁsmaraṇē sakalaṁ hyaghamāśu layaṁ vrajati। smaratastu vimuktipadaṁ paramaṁ sphuṭamēṣyati tatkimapākriyatē ॥3॥
[यततः + अपि (yatataḥ + api) - even for one striving; हरेः (harēḥ) - of Hari; पद-संस्मरणे (pada-saṁsmaraṇē) - in remembrance of the feet; सकलम् (sakalam) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; अघम् (agham) - sin; आशु (āśu) - quickly; लयम् (layam) - dissolution; व्रजति (vrajati) - undergoes; स्मरतः (smarataḥ) - for one who remembers; तु (tu) - but; विमुक्ति-पदम् (vimukti-padam) - state of liberation; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; स्फुटम् (sphuṭam) - certainly; एष्यति (ēṣyati) - will come; तत् (tat) - that; किम् (kim) - why; अपाक्रियते (apākriyatē) - is cast aside;]
Even when one merely strives to remember Hari’s feet, all sin quickly dissolves; but for one who remembers them, the supreme state of liberation will certainly come. Why, then, is that cast aside? (3)

श?ृणुतामलसत्यवचः परमं शपथेरितमुच्छ्रितबाहुयुगम्। न हरेः परमो न हरेः सदृशः परमः स तु सर्वचिदात्मगणात् ॥४॥
śa?r̥ṇutāmalasatyavacaḥ paramaṁ śapathēritamucchritabāhuyugam। na harēḥ paramō na harēḥ sadr̥śaḥ paramaḥ sa tu sarvacidātmagaṇāt ॥4॥
[श?ृणुत + अमल-सत्य-वचः (śa?r̥ṇuta + amala-satya-vacaḥ) - hear the spotless true declaration; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; शपथ-ईरितम् (śapatha-īritam) - uttered under oath; उच्छ्रित-बाहु-युगम् (ucchrita-bāhu-yugam) - with both arms raised; न (na) - there is none; हरेः (harēḥ) - than Hari; परमः (paramaḥ) - higher; न (na) - there is none; हरेः (harēḥ) - to Hari; सदृशः (sadr̥śaḥ) - equal; परमः (paramaḥ) - higher; सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - indeed; सर्व-चिदात्म-गणात् (sarva-cidātma-gaṇāt) - than the entire host of conscious selves;]
Hear this supreme, spotless, true declaration, uttered under oath with both arms raised: none is higher than Hari, and none is equal to Hari. He indeed is higher than the entire host of conscious selves. (4)

यदि नाम परो न भवेत् स हरिः कथमस्य वशे जगदेतदभूत्। यदि नाम न तस्य वशे सकलं कथमेव तु नित्यसुखं न भवेत् ॥५॥
yadi nāma parō na bhavēt sa hariḥ kathamasya vaśē jagadētadabhūt। yadi nāma na tasya vaśē sakalaṁ kathamēva tu nityasukhaṁ na bhavēt ॥5॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; नाम (nāma) - indeed; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; न (na) - not; भवेत् (bhavēt) - were; सः (saḥ) - he; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; कथम् (katham) - how; अस्य (asya) - his; वशे (vaśē) - under control; जगत् (jagat) - world; एतत् (ētat) - this; अभूत् (abhūt) - came to be; यदि (yadi) - if; नाम (nāma) - indeed; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; वशे (vaśē) - under control; सकलम् (sakalam) - everything; कथम् (katham) - how; एव (ēva) - indeed; तु (tu) - then; नित्यसुखम् (nityasukham) - eternally happy; न (na) - not; भवेत् (bhavēt) - would be;]
If Hari were not supreme, how did this world come under his control? If everything were not under his control, why, then, would it not be eternally happy? (5)

न कर्मविमामलकालगुणप्रभृतीशमचित्तनु तद्धि यतः। चिदचित्तनु सर्वमसौ तु हरिर्यमयेदिति वैदिकमस्ति वचः ॥६॥
na karmavimāmalakālaguṇaprabhr̥tīśamacittanu taddhi yataḥ। cidacittanu sarvamasau tu hariryamayēditi vaidikamasti vacaḥ ॥6॥
[न (na) - not; कर्म-विमा-मल-काल-गुण-प्रभृति (karma-vimā-mala-kāla-guṇa-prabhr̥ti) - karma, measure, impurity, time, qualities, and the like; ईशम् (īśam) - the Lord; अचित्-तनु (acit-tanu) - insentient forms; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; यतः (yataḥ) - because; चित्-अचित्-तनु (cit-acit-tanu) - sentient and insentient forms; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; असौ (asau) - he; तु (tu) - but; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; यमयेत् (yamayēt) - would govern; इति (iti) - thus; वैदिकम् (vaidikam) - Vedic; अस्ति (asti) - there is; वचः (vacaḥ) - declaration;]
Karma, measure, impurity, time, the qualities, and the like—being insentient forms—would not govern the Lord; for there is a Vedic declaration that Hari himself governs everything, all sentient and insentient forms. (6)

व्यवहारभिदापि गुरोर्जगतां न तु चित्तगता स हि चोद्यपरम्। बहवः पुरुषाः पुरुषप्रवरो हरिरित्यवदत् स्वयमेव हरिः ॥७॥
vyavahārabhidāpi gurōrjagatāṁ na tu cittagatā sa hi cōdyaparam। bahavaḥ puruṣāḥ puruṣapravarō harirityavadat svayamēva hariḥ ॥7॥
[व्यवहार-भिदा (vyavahāra-bhidā) - distinction in dealings; अपि (api) - even though; गुरोः (gurōḥ) - of the teacher; जगताम् (jagatām) - of the worlds; न तु (na tu) - but not; चित्त-गता (citta-gatā) - present only in the mind; स (sa) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; चोद्य-परम् (cōdya-param) - beyond objection; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - persons; पुरुष-प्रवरः (puruṣa-pravaraḥ) - the foremost person; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; इति (iti) - thus; अवदत् (avadat) - said; स्वयम् एव (svayam ēva) - himself; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari;]
Even though the teacher of the worlds makes distinctions in his dealings, they are not merely in his mind; this is indeed beyond objection. Hari himself said, “There are many persons; Hari is the foremost person.” (7)

चतुराननपूर्वविमुक्तगणा हरिमेत्य तु पूर्ववदेव सदा। नियतोच्चविनीचतयैव निजां स्थितिमापुरिति स्म परं वचनम् ॥८॥
caturānanapūrvavimuktagaṇā harimētya tu pūrvavadēva sadā। niyatōccavinīcatayaiva nijāṁ sthitimāpuriti sma paraṁ vacanam ॥8॥
[चतुरानन-पूर्व-विमुक्त-गणाः (caturānana-pūrva-vimukta-gaṇāḥ) - hosts of liberated beings headed by the Four-faced One; हरिम् (harim) - Hari; एत्य (ētya) - having reached; तु (tu) - however; पूर्ववत् + एव (pūrvavat + ēva) - exactly as before; सदा (sadā) - forever; नियत-उच्च-विनीचतया + एव (niyata-ucca-vinīcatayā + ēva) - strictly according to the fixed gradation of higher and lower ranks; निजाम् (nijām) - their own; स्थितिम् (sthitim) - station; आपुः (āpuḥ) - attained; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; परम् (param) - supreme; वचनम् (vacanam) - declaration;]
Having reached Hari, however, the hosts of liberated beings headed by the Four-faced One attained their own stations forever, exactly as before and strictly according to the fixed hierarchy of higher and lower ranks. This indeed is the supreme declaration. (8)

आनन्दतीर्थसन्नाम्ना पूर्णप्रज्ञाभिधायुजा। कृतं हर्यष्टकं भक्त्या पठतः प्रियते हरिः ॥९॥
ānandatīrthasannāmnā pūrṇaprajñābhidhāyujā। kr̥taṁ haryaṣṭakaṁ bhaktyā paṭhataḥ priyatē hariḥ ॥9॥
[आनन्दतीर्थ-सन्नाम्ना (ānandatīrtha-sannāmnā) - by one named Ānandatīrtha; पूर्णप्रज्ञ-अभिधा-युजा (pūrṇaprajña-abhidhā-yujā) - bearing the name Pūrṇaprajña; कृतम् (kr̥tam) - composed; हरि-अष्टकम् (hari-aṣṭakam) - octet of verses to Hari; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; पठतः (paṭhataḥ) - of one who recites; प्रियते (priyatē) - is pleased; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari;]
Hari is pleased with one who devotedly recites this octet of verses to Hari, composed by Ānandatīrtha, who bears the name Pūrṇaprajña. (9)
