Taittirīyopaniṣat 01.16 and 17
भूरित्यग्नौ प्रतितिष्ठति। भुव इति वायौ। सुवरित्यादित्ये। मह इति ब्रह्मणि। आप्नोति स्वाराज्यम्। आप्नोति मनसस्पतिम्। वाक्पतिश्चक्षुष्पतिः। श्रोत्रपतिर्विज्ञान पतिः। एतत्ततो भवति ॥१६॥
bhūrit y agnau pratitiṣṭhati। bhuva iti vāyau। suvar ity āditye। maha iti brahmaṇi। āpnoti svārājyam। āpnoti manasaspatim। vākpatiś cakṣuṣpatiḥ। śrotrapatiḥ vijñāna patiḥ। etat tato bhavati ॥16॥
[भूः (bhūḥ) - earth; इति (iti) - thus; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; प्रतितिष्ठति (pratitiṣṭhati) - abides; भुवः (bhuvaḥ) - atmosphere; इति (iti) - thus; वायौ (vāyau) - in air; सुवः (suvaḥ) - heaven; इति (iti) - thus; आदित्ये (āditye) - in the sun; मः (maḥ) - greatness; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रह्मणि (brahmaṇi) - in Brahman; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; स्वाराज्यम् (svārājyam) - sovereignty; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; पतिम् (patim) - lord; वाक्-पतिः (vāk-patiḥ) - lord of speech; चक्षुः-पतिः (cakṣuḥ-patiḥ) - lord of the eye; श्रोत्र-पतिः (śrotra-patiḥ) - lord of the ear; विज्ञान-पतिः (vijñāna-patiḥ) - lord of knowledge; एतत् (etat) - this; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; भवति (bhavati) - becomes;]
"Bhūḥ" abides in fire, "Bhuvaḥ" in air, "Suvaḥ" in the sun, "Maḥ" in Brahman. He attains his own sovereignty; attains lordship of the mind; lordship of speech; lordship of the eye; lordship of the ear; and lordship of the knowledge. This becomes from that.
आकाशशरीरं ब्रह्म। सत्यात्म प्राणारामं मन आनन्दम्। शान्तिसमृद्धममृतम्। इति प्राचीनयोग्योपास्व ॥१७॥
ākāśaśarīraṃ brahma. satyātma prāṇārāmaṃ mana ānandam. śāntisamṛddhamamṛtam. iti prācīnayogyopāsva ॥17॥
[आकाशशरीरम् (ākāśaśarīram) - space-body; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; सत्यात्म (satyātma) - truth-self; प्राणारामम् (prāṇārāmam) - breath-abode; मन (mana) - mind; आनन्दम् (ānandam) - bliss; शान्तिसमृद्धम् (śāntisamṛddham) - peace-fulfilled; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - immortal; इति (iti) - thus; प्राचीनयोग्योपास्व (prācīnayogyopāsva) - O ancient-worthy, meditate;]
(Space-body is Brahman. Truth-self, breath-abode, mind, bliss. Peace-fulfilled, immortal. Thus, O ancient-worthy, meditate.)
Brahman has the body of space. Its essence is truth, the abode is breath, and its bliss is that of the mind. It is filled with peace and is immortal. Thus, the ancient and worthy ones meditate upon it.
Taittirīya Bhāshya 01.16 and 17
An ancient testimonial from Brahmasara is quoted, where terminologies in the Upanishad are elaborated with a Pancharatra context. Various auspicious attributes and qualities are those of Lord Vishnu.
अनिरुद्धस्तु भूर्नामा हुताशे संव्यवस्थितः। प्रद्युम्नो भगवान् वायौ भुव इत्येव कीर्तितः॥
aniruddhastu bhūrnāmā hutāśe saṃvyavasthitaḥ। pradyumno bhagavān vāyau bhuva ityeva kīrtitaḥ॥
[अनिरुद्धः (aniruddhaḥ) - unobstructed; तु (tu) - but; भूः (bhūḥ) - earth; नाम (nāma) - named; हुताशे (hutāśe) - in fire; संव्यवस्थितः (saṃvyavasthitaḥ) - situated; प्रद्युम्नः (pradyumnaḥ) - Pradyumna; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; वायौ (vāyau) - in wind; भुव (bhuva) - in space; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; कीर्तितः (kīrtitaḥ) - is said;]
"But Aniruddha, called Bhū, is established in the fire; Pradyumna, called 'Bhuva', is said to be present in the wind.
सङ्कर्षणः सुवार्नामा सूर्ये तिष्ठति केशवः। महोनामा वासुदेवो ब्रह्मणिस्थश्चतुर्मुखे॥
saṅkarṣaṇaḥ suvārnāmā sūrye tiṣṭhati keśavaḥ। mahonāmā vāsudevo brahmaṇisthaś caturmukhe॥
[सङ्कर्षणः (saṅkarṣaṇaḥ) - the one who draws together; सुवार्नामा (suvārnāmā) - having the good name; सूर्ये (sūrye) - in the sun; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava; महो (maho) - great; नामा (nāmā) - named; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; ब्रह्मणि (brahmaṇi) - in Brahmā; स्थ (stha) - situated; चतुर्मुखे (caturmukhe) - in the four-faced one;]
Keśava in the form of Saṅkarṣaṇa is renowned as 'Suva' and abides in the sun. The Lord Vāsudeva, named 'Maha', is situated within the four-faced creator, Brahmā.
स वासुदेवः स्वाराज्यं व्याप्यास्मिन् मनसस्पतौ। अनिरुद्धे च संव्याप्तः ततो वागादिनां पतिः॥
sa vāsudevaḥ svārājyaṃ vyāpyāsmin manasaspatau। aniruddhe ca saṃvyāptaḥ tato vāgādināṃ patiḥ॥
[स (sa) - he; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; स्वाराज्यं (svārājyaṃ) - own sovereignty; व्याप्य (vyāpya) - having pervaded; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; मनसस्पतौ (manasaspatau) - lord of mind; अनिरुद्धे (aniruddhe) - in Aniruddha; च (ca) - and; संव्याप्तः (saṃvyāptaḥ) - completely pervaded; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वागादिनां (vāgādināṃ) - of speech and others; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord;]
He, Vāsudeva, pervades his own sovereignty and is the lord of the mind as well, being fully present in Aniruddha; he then becomes the lord of speech and other faculties.
वागादिषु स्थितो नित्यं भवत्येष जनार्दनः। स्वव्यापी च जगद्व्यापी नित्यैश्वर्यात् स ईश्वरः॥
vāgādiṣu sthito nityaṃ bhavatyeṣa janārdanaḥ। svavyāpī ca jagadvyāpī nityaiśvaryāt sa īśvaraḥ॥
[वाक् (vāk) - speech; आदिषु (ādiṣu) - and others; in the beginnings; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (epithet of Viṣṇu); स्वव्यापी (svavyāpī) - pervading oneself; च (ca) - and; जगत् (jagat) - the world; व्यापी (vyāpī) - pervading; नित्यैश्वर्यात् (nityaiśvaryāt) - from eternal sovereignty; सः (saḥ) - he; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the Lord;]
Lord Janārdana is ever present in speech and all else; he pervades himself and the world, and by his eternal sovereignty, he is the Lord.
आकाशवद् व्याप्तदेहः सत्यात्मा गुणपूर्तितः। वायोर्विशेषरमको बलानन्दस्वरूपवान्॥
ākāśavad vyāptadehaḥ satyātmā guṇapūrtitaḥ। vāyorviśeṣaramako balānandasvarūpavān॥
[आकाशवत् (ākāśavat) - like space; व्याप्तदेहः (vyāptadehaḥ) - having a pervaded body; सत्यात्मा (satyātmā) - whose essence is truth; गुणपूर्तितः (guṇapūrtitaḥ) - filled with qualities; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of air; विशेषरमकः (viśeṣaramakaḥ) - having special delight; बलानन्दस्वरूपवान् (balānandasvarūpavān) - whose nature is strength and bliss;]
His body is like space, which pervades all, whose essence is truth and which is filled with qualities. He delights especially in air, and his nature is strength and bliss.
ज्ञानानन्द स्वरूपोऽसौ शान्तिनामा सुखोन्नतेः। अन्तगत्वात् स्वतः पूर्तेः समृद्धं तत् प्रकीर्तितम्॥
jñānānanda svarūpo'sau śāntināmā sukhonnateḥ। antagatvāt svataḥ pūrteḥ samṛddhaṃ tat prakīrtitam॥
[ज्ञान (jñāna) - knowledge; आनन्द (ānanda) - bliss; स्वरूपः (svarūpaḥ) - nature; essence; असौ (asau) - he; that one; शान्ति (śānti) - peace; नामा (nāmā) - named; called; सुख (sukha) - happiness; उन्नतेः (unnateḥ) - of elevation; of exaltation; अन्तगत्वात् (antagatvāt) - from being within; from internal presence; स्वतः (svataḥ) - from oneself; by oneself; पूर्तेः (pūrteḥ) - of fulfillment; of completion; समृद्धं (samṛddham) - prosperous; abundant; तत् (tat) - that; प्रकीर्तितम् (prakīrtitam) - is proclaimed; is declared;]
He, whose essence is knowledge and bliss (jñānānanda) is called Peace (śānti), as he is elevated with happiness. He is called 'samṛddham' i.e. abundant, as he is filled within, on his own, with abundant prosperity.
इत्युपास्व प्राथमिको योग्यस्त्वं मदुपासने। प्राधान्यादिति पूर्वं हि प्राह विष्णुश्चतुर्मुखम्॥
ityupāsva prāthamiko yogyaḥ tvaṃ mad-upāsane। prādhānyād iti pūrvaṃ hi prāha viṣṇuḥ caturmukham॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उपास्व (upāsva) - worship; प्राथमिकः (prāthamikaḥ) - primary; योग्यः (yogyaḥ) - fit; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; मदुपासने (mad-upāsane) - in my worship; प्राधान्यात् (prādhānyāt) - due to primacy; इति (iti) - thus; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; हि (hi) - indeed; प्राह (prāha) - said; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; चतुर्मुखम् (caturmukham) - to the four-faced (Brahmā);]
Thus, you are the foremost and worthy of my worship. - thus, Lord Viṣṇu previously taught to the four-faced Brahmā owing to his primacy."
