Shat.Upa 03.02
तस्मै स होवाच अतिप्रश्नान् पृच्छसि ब्रह्मिष्ठोऽसीति। तस्मात्तेऽहं ब्रवीमि। आत्मत एष प्राणो जायते। यथैषा पुरुषे च्छाया एतस्मिन्नेतदाततम् ॥२॥
tasmai sa hovāca atipraśnān pṛcchasi brahmiṣṭho'sīti। tasmātte'haṃ bravīmi। ātmat eṣa prāṇo jāyate। yathaiṣā puruṣe cchāyā etasminnetadātatam ॥2॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सः (saḥ) - he; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अतिप्रश्नान् (atipraśnān) - difficult questions; पृच्छसि (pṛcchasi) - you ask; ब्रह्मिष्ठः (brahmiṣṭhaḥ) - knower of Brahman; असि (asi) - you are; इति (iti) - thus; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - speak; आत्मतः (ātmatḥ) - from the Ātman; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life force; जायते (jāyate) - is born; यथा (yathā) - as; एषा (eṣā) - this; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in the person; च्छाया (cchāyā) - shadow; एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this; एतत् (etat) - this; आततम् (ātatam) - is spread;]
He said to him, "You ask profound questions because you are a knower of Brahman." Therefore, I will tell you: This life force is born from the Ātman. Just as a person spreads a shadow, so is this.
Bhāṣya 03.02
In the current context, 'ātmatḥ' means from the Supreme-Ātman, i.e. from the Lord.
आत्मतः परमात्मतः॥
ātma-taḥ paramātma-taḥ॥
[आत्मतः (ātma-taḥ) - from the self; परमात्मतः (paramātma-taḥ) - from the Supreme Self;]
In the current context, 'ātmatḥ', i.e. from the Ātman, means 'from the Supreme-Ātman', i.e. from the Lord.
