Mundaka 5.02
समाने वृक्षे पुरुषो निमग्नः आनीशया शोचति मुह्यमानः। जुष्टं यदा पश्यत्यन्यमीशमस्य महिमानमिति वीतशोकः ॥ २ ॥
samāne vṛkṣe puruṣo nimagnaḥ ānīśayā śocati muhyamānaḥ। juṣṭaṃ yadā paśyatyanyamīśamasya mahimānamiti vītaśokaḥ ॥ 2 ॥
[समाने (samāne) - on the same; वृक्षे (vṛkṣe) - tree; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; निमग्नः (nimagnaḥ) - immersed; आनीशया (ānīśayā) - due to helplessness / due to not Lord-less; शोचति (śocati) - grieves; मुह्यमानः (muhyamānaḥ) - bewildered; जुष्टं (juṣṭam) - adored; यदा (yadā) - when; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; ईशम् (īśam) - the Lord; अस्य (asya) - of this; महिमानम् (mahimānam) - glory; इति (iti) - thus; वीतशोकः (vītaśokaḥ) - free from sorrow;]
On the same tree, the person is immersed, grieves due to helplessness, bewildered. When he sees another being, the adored, the Lord, and realizes the glory of this, he becomes free from sorrow.
Bhāshya 5.02
A testimonial from Brahmasāra is quoted, explaining the difference between that supreme personality 'Puruṣottama' and the individual living being. The Lord is called 'anīśā' as he is 'Lord-less'.
"नास्तीशोऽस्या यतोऽन्यो हि ततोऽनीशा हरेर्मतिः। तया मुह्यति जीवस्तमन्यं ज्ञात्वा विमुच्यते॥ जीवादन्यः स्वतन्त्रो यो यतोऽतः पुरुषोत्तमः॥"
"nāstīśo'syā yato'nyo hi tato'nīśā harermatiḥ। tayā muhyati jīvastamanyaṃ jñātvā vimucyate॥ jīvādanyaḥ svatantraḥ yo yato'taḥ puruṣottamaḥ॥"
[न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; ईशः (īśaḥ) - lord; अस्या (asyā) - of this; यतः (yataḥ) - because; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; हि (hi) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अनीशा (anīśā) - Lord less; हरेः (hareḥ) - of Hari; मतिः (matiḥ) - intelligence; तया (tayā) - by that; मुह्यति (muhyati) - is bewildered; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - the living entity; तम् (tam) - him; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; विमुच्यते (vimucyate) - is liberated; जीवात् (jīvāt) - than the living entity; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; स्वतन्त्रः (svatantraḥ) - independent; यः (yaḥ) - who; यतः (yataḥ) - because; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - the Supreme Person;]
There is no other lord of this universe, hence that supreme Hari is called 'anīśā', i.e. 'Lord-less'. By His intelligence, the living entity is bewildered. By knowing Him, he is liberated. Beyond the living entity, there is another who is independent, and that is 'Puruṣottama', the Supreme Person.
इति ब्रह्मसारे।
iti brahmasāre।
