Mundaka 5.01
द्वा सुपर्णा सयुजा सखाया समानं वृक्षं परिषस्वजाते। तयोरन्यः पिप्पलं स्वाद्वत्त्यनश्नन्नन्यो अभिचाकशीति ॥१॥
dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyā samānaṁ vṛkṣaṁ pariṣasvajāte। tayoranyaḥ pippalaṁ svādvattyanaśnannanyo abhicākaśīti ॥1॥
[द्वा (dvā) - two; सुपर्णा (suparṇā) - beautiful-winged; सयुजा (sayujā) - together; सखाया (sakhāyā) - friends; समानं (samānaṁ) - same; वृक्षं (vṛkṣaṁ) - tree; परिषस्वजाते (pariṣasvajāte) - embraced; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of them; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - one; पिप्पलं (pippalaṁ) - fruit; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet; अत्ति (atti) - eats; अनश्नन् (anaśnan) - not eating; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अभिचाकशीति (abhicākaśīti) - looks on;]
Two beautiful-winged friends, together, embraced the same tree. Of them, one eats the sweet fruit; the other looks on without eating.
Bhāshya 5.01
It is 'jīva' i.e. the individual being, who eats, without knowing the progenitor, thinking fruits are sweet. By His independence, Lord Vishnu, the other, is always beyond the state of being an enjoyer or a sufferer at the mundane level, and He remains imperishable. But he does partake of the auspicious fruits in his own way.
स्वादुवत् सर्वदाऽत्ति। न तु स्वाद्वेव।
svāduvat sarvadā'tti। na tu svādveva।
[स्वादुवत् (svāduvat) - like something tasty; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; अत्ति (atti) - eats; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; स्वादु (svādu) - tasty; एव (eva) - only;]
He always eats as if it were something tasty, but it is not always tasty.
"तस्येदाहुः पिप्पलं स्वाद्वग्रे तन्नोन्नशद्यः पितरं न वेद"
"tasyedāhuḥ pippalaṃ svādvagre tannonnaśadyaḥ pitaraṃ na veda"
[तस्य (tasya) - his; इदाहुः (idāhuḥ) - they say; पिप्पलम् (pippalam) - fruit; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet; अग्रे (agre) - in the beginning; तत् (tat) - that; न (na) - not; उन्नशद्यः (unnaśadyaḥ) - those who eat; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; न (na) - not; वेद (veda) - know;]
(They say that his fruit is sweet in the beginning; those who eat it do not know the father.)
"It is said that the fruit of his actions is sweet at first for those who partake in it, without recognizing their progenitor."
इत्यज्ञानां स्वादुनिषेधात्।
ityajñānāṃ svāduniṣedhāt।
[इति (iti) - thus; अज्ञानां (ajñānāṃ) - of the ignorant; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet; निषेधात् (niṣedhāt) - from prohibition;]
Thus, the ignorant are prohibited from indulging in what is sweet.
जीवाद्यमेव नाश्नाति भगवान् न तु नाश्नात्येव।
jīvādyameva nāśnāti bhagavān na tu nāśnātyeva।
[जीव (jīva) - the individual being; आद्यं (ādyam) - first, primary, or original; एव (eva): - only; न (na) - not; अश्नाति (aśnāti) - eats; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; नाश्नाति (nāśnāti) - does not eat; एव (eva) - indeed;]
An individual being alone is not the primary consumer. The Lord indeed is not said not to partake.
"तस्येदाहुः पिप्पलं स्वादु"
"tasyedāhuḥ pippalaṃ svādu"
[तस्य (tasya) - his; इद (id) - this; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; पिप्पलम् (pippalam) - fruit; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet;]
"They say that His fruit is sweet"
इत्युक्तत्वात्।
ityuktatvāt।
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त (ukta) - said; त्वात् (tvāt) - because of;]
- because it is said so.
"स्वातन्त्र्येणैव भोक्तृत्वाद् दुःखाभोगाच्च सर्वदा। अभोक्ता चैव भोक्ता च भगवान् विष्णुरव्ययः॥"
"svātantryeṇaiva bhoktṛtvād duḥkhābhogācca sarvadā। abhoktā caiva bhoktā ca bhagavān viṣṇuravyayaḥ॥"
[स्वातन्त्र्येण (svātantryeṇa) - by independence; एव (eva) - indeed; भोक्तृत्वात् (bhoktṛtvāt) - from the state of being an enjoyer; दुःख (duḥkha) - suffering; अभोगात् (abhogāt) - from non-enjoyment; च (ca) - and; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; अभोक्ता (abhoktā) - non-enjoyer; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भोक्ता (bhoktā) - enjoyer; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Vishnu; अव्ययः (avyayaḥ) - imperishable;]
"By His independence, Lord Vishnu is always beyond the state of being an enjoyer or a sufferer. He is both the non-enjoyer and the enjoyer, and He remains imperishable."
इति तत्त्वसारे॥

[इति (iti) - thus; तत्त्वसारे (tattvasāre) - in the essence of truth;]
