पुरमेकादशद्वारं अजस्यावक्रचेतसः। अनुष्ठाय न शोचति विमुक्तश्च विमुच्यते। एतद्वै तत् ॥१॥
puramekādaśadvāraṃ ajasyāvakracetasaḥ। anuṣṭhāya na śocati vimuktaśca vimucyate। etadvai tat ॥1॥
[पुरम् (puram) - city; एकादश (ekādaśa) - eleven; द्वारम् (dvāram) - gates; अजस्य (ajasya) - of the unborn lord; अवक्र (avakra) - un-distorted; चेतसः (cetasaḥ) - conciousness; अनुष्ठाय (anuṣṭhāya) - one who acts in accordance with dharma with rigor; न (na) - not; शोचति (śocati) - grieves; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - liberated; च (ca) - and; विमुच्यते (vimucyate) - is freed; एतत् (etat) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
The city with eleven gates (the material body) belongs to that Unborn Lord with un-distorted consciousness. Having acted in accordance with dharma with rigour, he does not grieve, and being liberated, he is freed. This (Unborn Lord) is indeed that.
Bhāṣya 2.2.01
The word 'anuṣṭhāya' signifies the seeker who acts always in accordance with dharma with rigor, having realized that this material body is under the control of the Lord. Such a person without ego becomes a direct perceiver even before getting liberated from the body.
इदं पुरं भगवदधीनमित्यनुष्ठाय। अजस्येदं पुरमिति स्थितिं कृत्वा।
idaṁ puraṁ bhagavadadhīnamityanuṣṭhāya। ajasyedaṁ puramiti sthitiṁ kṛtvā।
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; पुरं (puraṁ) - city; भगवदधीनम् (bhagavadadhīnam) - under the control of the Lord; इति (iti) - thus; अनुष्ठाय (anuṣṭhāya) - one who acts in accordance with dharma; अजस्य (ajasya) - of the Unborn Lord; इदं (idaṁ) - this; पुरम् (puram) - city; इति (iti) - thus; स्थितिं (sthitiṁ) - state; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made;]
The word 'anuṣṭhāya' signifies one who acts in accordance with dharma, with rigor, having realized that this city, i.e. the body, is under the control of the Lord; having established the state of mind, that this city belongs to that Unborn Lord.
विमुक्तो निरभीमानात् पूर्वमेवापरोक्षवित्। मुख्यतो मुच्यते पश्चात् दुःखाद्याभासहानतः॥
vimukto nirabhīmānāt pūrvamevāparokṣavit। mukhyato mucyate paścāt duḥkhādyābhāsahānataḥ॥
[विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - liberated; निरभीमानात् (nirabhīmānāt) - from egolessness; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; अपरोक्षवित् (aparokṣavit) - direct perceiver; मुख्यतः (mukhyataḥ) - primarily; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is freed; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; दुःख (duḥkha) - suffering; आद्य (ādya) - beginning; आभास (ābhāsa) - appearance; हानतः (hānataḥ) - from cessation;]
"The liberated one, from ego-less-ness, indeed becomes a direct perceiver even before (liberation). Primarily, he is freed afterwards from the cessation of the appearance of suffering and the like."
