1.1.09-10
शान्तसङ्कल्पः सुमना यथा स्यात् वीतमन्युर्गौतमो माऽभि मृत्यो। त्वत्प्रसृष्टं माऽभि वदेत् प्रतीत एतत् त्रयाणां प्रथमं वरं वृणे ॥९॥
śānta-saṅkalpaḥ sumanā yathā syāt vīta-manyur gautamaḥ mā abhi mṛtyo. tvat-prasṛṣṭaṁ mā abhi vadet pratīta etat trayāṇāṁ prathamaṁ varaṁ vṛṇe ॥9॥
[शान्तसङ्कल्पः (śānta-saṅkalpaḥ) - of peaceful resolve; सुमनाः (sumanāḥ) - cheerful-minded; यथा (yathā) - so that; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; वीतमन्युः (vīta-manyuḥ) - free from anger; गौतमः (gautamaḥ) - Gautama (my father); मा (mā) - not; अभि (abhi) - toward; मृत्यो (mṛtyo) - O Death; त्वत्प्रसृष्टम् (tvat-prasṛṣṭam) - sent forth by you; मा (mā) - not; अभि (abhi) - toward; वदेत् (vadet) - speak harshly; प्रतीतः (pratītaḥ) - assured; एतत् (etat) - this; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; प्रथमम् (prathamam) - first; वरम् (varam) - boon; वृणे (vṛṇe) - I choose]
May Gautama, of peaceful resolve and cheerful mind, free from anger, be not harsh toward me, O Death, nor reproach me as having been sent by you. Assured of this, I choose this as the first of the three boons.
यथा पुरस्तात् भविता प्रतीतः औद्दालकिरारुणिर्मत्प्रसृष्टः। सुखं रात्रीः शयिता वीतमन्युः त्वां ददृशिवान् मृत्युमुखात् प्रमुक्तम् ॥१०॥
yathā purastāt bhavitā pratītaḥ auddālakir āruṇir mat-prasṛṣṭaḥ. sukhaṁ rātrīḥ śayitā vīta-manyuḥ tvām dadṛśivān mṛtyu-mukhāt pramuktam ॥10॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - formerly; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; प्रतीतः (pratītaḥ) - assured; औद्दालकिः (auddālakiḥ) - Uddālaka; आरुणिः (āruṇiḥ) - the son of Aruṇa; मत्प्रसृष्टः (mat-prasṛṣṭaḥ) - sent forth by me; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; रात्रीः (rātrīḥ) - nights; शयिता (śayitā) - he shall sleep; वीतमन्युः (vīta-manyuḥ) - without anger; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ददृशिवान् (dadṛśivān) - having seen; मृत्युमुखात् (mṛtyu-mukhāt) - from the jaws of death; प्रमुक्तम् (pramuktam) - released]
As it shall be, assuredly, that Uddālaka Āruṇi will peacefully sleep through the nights, free from anger, having sent forth by me, found and seen you released from the jaws of death.
Bhāṣya 1.1.09-10
Ancient testimonial declared the three boons given by lord Yama as: (1) Peace of mind for his father, (2) the radiant knower of the Nāchiketa fire, and (3) that One Viṣṇu, who is established in liberation.
सौमनस्यं पितुश्चैव नाचिकेताग्निगं हरिम्। मुक्ते स्थितं च तं विष्णुं इति प्रादात् वरत्रयम्॥
saumanasyaṁ pituḥ ca eva nāciketāgni-gaṁ harim. mukte sthitaṁ ca taṁ viṣṇum iti prādāt vara-trayam॥
[सौमनस्यं (saumanasyam) - peace of mind; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नाचिकेत-अग्निगम् (nāciketa-agni-gam) - the knower of the Nāchiketa fire; हरिम् (harim) - the radiant one; मुक्ते (mukte) - in liberation; स्थितम् (sthitam) - established; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu (the all-pervading one); इति (iti) - thus; प्रादात् (prādāt) - he granted; वरत्रयम् (vara-trayam) - the three boons]
Peace of mind for his father, the radiant knower of the Nāchiketa fire, and that One Viṣṇu, who is established in liberation; thus did he grant the three boons."
