श्रेयश्च प्रेयश्च मनुष्यमेत स्तौ सम्परीत्य विविनक्ति धीरः। श्रेयो धीरोऽभिप्रेयसो वृणीते प्रेयो मन्दो योगक्षेमान् वृणीते ॥२॥
śreyaḥ ca preyaḥ ca manuṣyam etau samparītya vivinakti dhīraḥ. śreyaḥ dhīraḥ abhipreyasaḥ vṛṇīte. preyaḥ mandaḥ yogakṣemān vṛṇīte ॥2॥
[श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the good/ auspicious; च (ca) - and; प्रेयः (preyaḥ) - the pleasant; च (ca) - and; मनुष्यम् (manuṣyam) - the person; एतौ (etau) - these two; सम्परीत्य (samparītya) - having approached or examined thoroughly; विविनक्ति (vivinakti) - discerns; धीरः (dhīraḥ) - the wise; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the good; धीरः (dhīraḥ) - the wise; अभिप्रेयसः (abhipreyasaḥ) - in preference to the merely pleasant; वृणीते (vṛṇīte) - chooses; प्रेयः (preyaḥ) - the pleasant; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - the dull or foolish; योगक्षेमान् (yogakṣemān) - acquisition and preservation; वृणीते (vṛṇīte) - chooses;]
The auspicious and the pleasant approach the person; the wise, having examined them, discerns between the two. The wise chooses the auspicious over the merely pleasant; the foolish chooses acquisition and preservation instead.
