The word 'ātma' here refers to supreme essence. The word 'vijugupsate' indicates without fear. Vedic testimonial from 'saukarāyaṇa' is quoted to substantiate the traditional understanding.
सर्वगं परमात्मानं सर्वं च परमात्मनि। यः पश्येत् स भयाभावान्नात्मानं गोप्तुमिच्छति॥
Whoever sees the all-pervading supreme self in all and all in the supreme self, that person, from the absence of fear, desires not to protect oneself.
इति सौकरायणश्रुतिः ॥६॥
- states the 'saukarāyaṇa' Vedic testimonial.
