आदित्यानामहं विष्णुर्ज्योतिषां रविरंशुमान्। मरीचिर्मरुतामस्मि नक्षत्राणामहं शशी ॥२१॥
ādityānām ahaṁ viṣṇuḥ, jyotiṣām raviḥ aṁśumān. marīciḥ marutām asmi, nakṣatrāṇām ahaṁ śaśī ॥21॥
[आदित्यानाम् (ādityānām) - among the Ādityas; अहम् (aham) - I; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; ज्योतिषाम् (jyotiṣām) - among the luminous bodies; रविः (raviḥ) - the Sun; अंशुमान् (aṁśumān) - radiant; मरीचिः (marīciḥ) - Marīci; मरुताम् (marutām) - among the Maruts; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; नक्षत्राणाम् (nakṣatrāṇām) - among the stars; अहम् (aham) - I; शशी (śaśī) - the Moon.]
Among the Ādityas, I am Viṣṇu; among luminous bodies, I am the radiant Sun; among the Maruts, I am Marīci; among the stars, I am the Moon.
Gīta Bhāshya 10.21
He is called 'Viṣṇu' because he is the: mover of all beings and creatures, pervades the heavens and the earth, supreme splendor, dwells in the beings, their intentionality, and traverser. Root 'viṣlṛ' means to pervade, and 'viśa' means to enter.
विष्णुः सर्वव्यापित्वप्रवेशित्वादेः।
viṣṇuḥ sarva-vyāpitva-praveśitva-ādeḥ.
[विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; सर्वव्यापित्व (sarva-vyāpitva) - pervasiveness of all; प्रवेशित्वादेः (praveśitva-ādeḥ) - and of penetrative presence, etc.]
He is called 'Viṣṇu' because of his all-pervading and penetrative nature.
"विष्लृ व्याप्तौ, विश प्रवेशने"
"viṣlṛ vyāptau, viśa praveśane"
[विष्लृ (viṣlṛ) - the root 'viṣlṛ'; व्याप्तौ (vyāptau) - in the sense of pervading; विश (viśa) - root 'viśa'; प्रवेशने (praveśane) - in the sense of entering.]
"'viṣlṛ' means to pervade, and 'viśa' means to enter."
इति च पठन्ति।
iti ca paṭhanti.
[इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; पठन्ति (paṭhanti) - they recite.]
- thus is the recitation.
"गतिश्च सर्वभूतानां प्रजानां चापि भारत। व्याप्तौ मे रोदसी पार्थ कान्तिश्चाभ्यधिका मम॥ अधिभूतनिविष्टश्च तदिच्छुश्चास्मि भारत। क्रमणाच्चाप्यहं पार्थ विष्णुरित्यभिसञ्ज्ञितः॥"
"gatiś-ca sarva-bhūtānāṁ prajānāṁ ca-api bhārata. vyāptau me rodasī pārtha kāntiś-ca-abhyadhikā mama॥ adhibhūta-niviṣṭaś-ca tad-icchuś-ca-asmi bhārata. kramaṇāt-ca-api-ahaṁ pārtha viṣṇuḥ-iti-abhi-saṁjñitaḥ॥"
[गतिः च (gatiḥ ca) - motion also; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarva-bhūtānām) - of all beings; प्रजानाम् च अपि (prajānām ca api) - and of all creatures too; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; व्याप्तौ (vyāptau) - in pervasion; मे (me) - mine; रोदसी (rodasī) - the heavens and the earth; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; कान्तिः च (kāntiḥ ca) - and splendor; अभ्यधिका (abhyadhikā) - is supreme; मम (mama) - of mine; अधिभूतनिविष्टः च (adhibhūta-niviṣṭaḥ ca) - established in the beings too; तत् इच्छुः च (tat icchuḥ ca) - desirer of that; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; क्रमणात् च अपि (kramaṇāt ca api) - and because of traversing; अहम् (aham) - I; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; विष्णुः इति (viṣṇuḥ iti) - as Viṣṇu; अभिसञ्ज्ञितः (abhi-saṁjñitaḥ) - am designated.]
"O Bhārata, I am the mover of all beings and creatures; I pervade the heavens and the earth; my splendor is supreme; I dwell in the beings and am their intentionality too; and I traverse - O Pārtha, Hence I am known as Viṣṇu."
इति मोक्षधर्मे ॥२१॥
