B.G 18.56
सर्वकर्माण्यपि सदा कुर्वाणो मद्व्यपाश्रयः। मत्प्रसादादवाप्नोति शाश्वतं पदमव्ययम् ॥५६॥
sarvakarmāṇyapi sadā kurvāṇo madvyapāśrayaḥ। matprasādādavāpnoti śāśvataṃ padamavyayam ॥56॥
[सर्वकर्माणि (sarvakarmāṇi) - all actions; अपि (api) - even; सदा (sadā) - always; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; मद्व्यपाश्रयः (madvyapāśrayaḥ) - taking refuge in Me; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by My grace; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; पदम् (padam) - abode; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable;]
Even while performing all actions, one who always takes refuge in Me attains the eternal and imperishable abode by My grace.
Gīta Bhāshya 18.56
After explaining the inner practices, starting with this verse, the Lord concludes with the external practice to be adopted.
पुनः अन्तरङ्गसाधनान्युक्त्वा उपसंहरति- सर्वकर्माणि इत्यादिना ॥५६॥
punaḥ antaraṅgasādhanānyuktvā upasaṁharati- sarvakarmāṇi ityādinā ॥56॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्तरङ्ग (antaraṅga) - inner; साधनानि (sādhanāni) - means; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having stated; उपसंहरति (upasaṁharati) - concludes; सर्व (sarva) - all; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; इत्यादिना (ityādinā) - and so on;]
(Again, having stated the inner means, concludes with 'all actions' and so on.)
After explaining the inner practices, it concludes with the (external practice to be adopted) with the verse 'sarvakarmāṇi', and others.
Gīta Tātparya 18.56
While performing all prescribed actions, one should act always after coming into the state of taking refuge in the Lord. The word 'api', i.e. even, is used in the sense that even a single action should not be done without relying on that Lord. Indeed, in this context, there is no room for acting as one wishes.
विहितानि सर्वकर्माण्यपि मद्व्यपाश्रयो भूत्वा सदा कुर्वाणः। न हि यथेष्टाचरणे तात्पर्यमत्र। तथा सति विहितकरणेपि समत्वात्।
vihitāni sarvakarmāṇyapi madvyapāśrayo bhūtvā sadā kurvāṇaḥ। na hi yatheṣṭācaraṇe tātparyamatra। tathā sati vihitakaraṇepi samatvāt।
[विहितानि (vihitāni) - prescribed; सर्वकर्माणि (sarvakarmāṇi) - all actions; अपि (api) - even; मद्व्यपाश्रयः (madvyapāśrayaḥ) - taking refuge in me; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - becoming; सदा (sadā) - always; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; यथेष्टाचरणे (yatheṣṭācaraṇe) - in acting as one wishes; तात्पर्यम् (tātparyam) - intention; अत्र (atra) - here; तथा (tathā) - thus; सति (sati) - being; विहितकरणे (vihitakaraṇe) - in performing prescribed duties; अपि (api) - even; समत्वात् (samatvāt) - due to equanimity;]
While performing all prescribed actions, one should act always after coming into the state of taking refuge in Me. Indeed, in this context there is no room for acting as one wishes. Thus, even while performing prescribed duties, one is stationed in equanimity.
"मामनुस्मर युद्ध्य च", "ततः स्वधर्मं किर्तिं च" इत्यादिप्रस्तुतविरोधः।
"māmanusmara yuddhya ca", "tataḥ svadharmaṃ kirtiṃ ca" ityādiprastutavirodhaḥ।
[माम् (mām) - me; अनुस्मर (anusmara) - remember; युद्ध्य (yuddhya) - fight; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - own duty; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; च (ca) - and; इत्यादि (ityādi) - etc.; प्रस्तुत (prastuta) - presented; विरोधः (virodhaḥ) - contradiction;]
Otherwise, the statements: "Remember me and fight", "performing one's own duty leads to fame" - present a contradiction in the context.
अपि शब्दस्तु एकमपि कर्म अतदाश्रयेण न कार्यमित्यर्थे ॥५६॥
api śabdastu ekamapi karma atadāśrayeṇa na kāryamityarthe ॥56॥
[अपि (api) - even; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - word; तु (tu) - but; एकम् (ekam) - one; अपि (api) - even; कर्म (karma) - action; अतदाश्रयेण (atadāśrayeṇa) - without relying on that; न (na) - not; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; अर्थे (arthe) - in the sense;]
The word 'api', i.e. even, is used in the sense that even a single action should not be done without relying on that Lord.
