Bhagavad Gīta Bhāshya and Tātparya
B.G 18.35
yayā svapnaṃ bhayaṃ śokaṃ viṣādaṃ madameva ca। na vimuñcati durmedhā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī ॥35॥
O son of Pritha, the determination by which one does not give up dreams, fear, sorrow, despair, and intoxication is considered to be of the nature of darkness (tāmasī).
Gīta Tātparya 18.35
The Yoga of devotion associated with Lord Vishnu and engaging in it is characterized as 'sāttvikī' determination. That is indeed pure which the elders declare as such; they criticize those that are rajasic and tamasik, and should be neglected.
"vaiṣṇavo bhaktiyogo yaḥ tadyuktā sāttvikī dhṛtiḥ।"
"The Yoga of devotion associated with Lord Vishnu and engaging in it is characterized as 'sāttvikī' determination."
iti ca।
- stated thus.
vihitaviṣayaivetyavyabhicāriṇī। "svapnaṃ bhayam" ityādi sarvaniṣiddhopalakṣaṇam।
The prescribed topic and object of discussion are infallible. "Dream, fear," etc., are indications of those that are prohibited.
"tattatsāttvikameva syāt yadyad vṛddhāḥ pracakṣate। nindanti tāmasaṃ tattadrājasaṃ tadupekṣitam॥"
"That is indeed pure which the elders declare as such; they criticize those that are rajasic and tamasik, and should be neglected."
iti hi bhāgavate।
- it is stated thus in the Bhāgavata Purāṇa.
"mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha", "abhayaṁ sattvasaṁśuddiḥ" ityādinā vṛddhāśca uktāḥ॥
"O son of Pṛthā, the great souls are devoted to me", "Fearlessness, purity, cleansing" - these are the words spoken by elders.
