B.G 17.10
यातयामं गतरसं पूति पर्युषितं च यत्। उच्छिष्टमपि चामेध्यं भोजनं तामसप्रियम् ॥१०॥
yātayāmaṃ gatarasaṃ pūti paryuṣitaṃ ca yat। ucchiṣṭamapi cāmedhyaṃ bhojanaṃ tāmasapriyam ॥10॥
[यातयामम् (yātayāmam) - stale; गतरसम् (gatarasam) - tasteless; पूति (pūti) - rotten; पर्युषितम् (paryuṣitam) - putrid; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; उच्छिष्टम् (ucchiṣṭam) - leftover; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अमेध्यम् (amedhyam) - impure; भोजनम् (bhojanam) - food; तामसप्रियम् (tāmasapriyam) - liked by the ignorant;]
Food that is stale, tasteless, rotten, putrid, leftover, and impure is preferred by those in the mode of ignorance.
Gīta Tātparya 17.10
'yātayāmam', i.e. stale food, is that which is past three hours after cooking, or when food has lost its essence. Pure devotees of the Lord have the capacity to decipher the nature of food.
"यामान्तरितपाकं तु यातयाममितीर्यते। क्वचिच्च गतसारं स्यान्नियम्यं यातमस्य यत्॥"
"yāmāntaritapākaṃ tu yātayāmamitīryate। kvacicca gatasāraṃ syānniyamyaṃ yātamasya yat॥"
[याम (yāma) - time; अन्तरित (antarita) - intervening; पाकं (pākaṃ) - cooking; तु (tu) - but; यातयामम् (yātayāmam) - past one Yāma (3 hours) / stale; इति (iti) - thus; ईर्यते (īryate) - is called; क्वचित् (kvacit) - sometimes; च (ca) - and; गत (gata) - lost; सारं (sāraṃ) - essence; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; नियम्यं (niyamyaṃ) - controlled; यातम् (yātam) - cooked; अस्य (asya) - of this; यत् (yat) - which;]
"The food that is past three hours from the time of cooking is referred to as 'yātayāmam', i.e. stale. If the essence is lost, and not controlled properly, then also food is termed as stale."

"पूर्वं स्वादु पश्चादन्यथा जातं गतरसम्। शुद्धभागवतानां तु स्वभावापेक्षयैव तु। स्वादुत्वादि विजानीयात् पदार्थानां न चान्यथा॥"
"pūrvaṃ svādu paścādanyathā jātaṃ gatarasam। śuddhabhāgavatānāṃ tu svabhāvāpekṣayaiva tu। svādutvādi vijānīyāt padārthānāṃ na cānyathā॥"
[पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - first; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; जातम् (jātam) - become; गतरसम् (gatarasam) - tasteless; शुद्धभागवतानाम् (śuddhabhāgavatānām) - of the pure devotees of the Lord; तु (tu) - but; स्वभावापेक्षया (svabhāvāpekṣayā) - by nature; एव (eva) - indeed; स्वादुत्वादि (svādutvādi) - sweetness, etc.; विजानीयात् (vijānīyāt) - one should know; पदार्थानाम् (padārthānām) - of substances; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
"Initially, something may seem sweet, but later it becomes tasteless. However, for the pure devotees of the Lord, by their very nature, they perceive the sweetness and other qualities of substances, not otherwise."
