Brahmasūtra Aṇu-Bhāṣya
B.Ab 2.01
श्रौतस्मृतिविरुद्धत्वात् स्मृतयो न गुणान् हरेः। निषेद्धुं शक्नुयुर्वेदा नित्यत्वान्मानमुत्तमम् ॥२-१॥
śrautasmṛtiviruddhatvāt smṛtayo na guṇān hareḥ। niṣeddhuṃ śaknuyurvedā nityatvān mānamuttamam ॥2-1॥
[श्रौत (śrauta) - of the Śruti (Veda); स्मृति (smṛti) - of the Smṛti (traditional texts); विरुद्धत्वात् (viruddhatvāt) - when in opposition; स्मृतयः (smṛtayaḥ) - the Smṛtis; न (na) - not; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; हरेः (hareḥ) - of Hari (Viṣṇu); निषेद्धुं (niṣeddhuṃ) - to prohibit; शक्नुयुः (śaknuyuḥ) - are able; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - the Vedas; नित्यत्वात् (nityatvāt) - because of eternality; मानम् (mānam) - authority; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
When there is a conflict between Śruti (vedas) and Smṛti (other man-made scriptures), Smṛti that doesn't praise the attributes of the Lord Hari has to be discarded. The Vedas, being eternal, are the highest authority. (2-1)
