Tantrasārasaṅgrahaḥ (तन्त्रसारसङ्ग्रहः)
Chapter Three (तृतीयोध्यायः)
प्रतिष्ठां कारयन् विष्णोः कुर्यात् सुप्रतिमां बुधः। लोहैर्वा शिलया दार्वा मृदा वापि यथाक्रमम् ॥१॥
pratiṣṭhāṁ kārayan viṣṇōḥ kuryāt supratimāṁ budhaḥ। lōhairvā śilayā dārvā mr̥dā vāpi yathākramam ॥1॥
[प्रतिष्ठाम् (pratiṣṭhām) - consecration; कारयन् (kārayan) - when having performed; विष्णोः (viṣṇōḥ) - of Viṣṇu; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should make; सु + प्रतिमाम् (su + pratimām) - an excellent image; बुधः (budhaḥ) - a learned man; लोहैः (lōhaiḥ) - from metals; वा (vā) - or; शिलया (śilayā) - from stone; दार्वा (dārvā) - from wood; मृदा (mr̥dā) - from clay; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - in due order;]
A learned man arranging the consecration of Viṣṇu should have an excellent image made, in due order, from metal, stone, wood, or clay. (1)

षण्णवत्यङ्गुलां योग आसीनामथवा स्थिताम्। शयानां वा मुमुक्षूणां व्याचक्षाणां निजां स्थितिम् ॥२॥
ṣaṇṇavatyaṅgulāṁ yōga āsīnāmathavā sthitām। śayānāṁ vā mumukṣūṇāṁ vyācakṣāṇāṁ nijāṁ sthitim ॥2॥
[षण्णवति + अङ्गुलाम् (ṣaṇṇavati + aṅgulām) - measuring ninety-six fingerbreadths; योग + आसीनाम् (yōga + āsīnām) - seated in yogic posture; अथवा (athavā) - or; स्थिताम् (sthitām) - standing; शयानाम् (śayānām) - reclining; वा (vā) - or; मुमुक्षूणाम् (mumukṣūṇām) - to seekers of liberation; व्याचक्षाणाम् (vyācakṣāṇām) - expounding; निजाम् (nijām) - his own; स्थितिम् (sthitim) - state;]
The image should measure ninety-six fingerbreadths and may be seated in a yogic posture, standing, or reclining, expounding his own state to seekers of liberation. (2)

मुखादूर्ध्वं द्व्यङ्गुलोच्चां नवाङ्गुललसन्मुखाम्। सुवृत्तत्र्यङ्गुलग्रीवामा स्तनाच्च षडङ्गुलाम् ॥३॥
mukhādūrdhvaṁ dvyaṅgulōccāṁ navāṅgulalasanmukhām। suvr̥ttatryaṅgulagrīvāmā stanācca ṣaḍaṅgulām ॥3॥
[मुखात् + ऊर्ध्वम् (mukhāt + ūrdhvam) - upward from the face; द्वि-अङ्गुल-उच्चाम् (dvi-aṅgula-uccām) - measuring two aṅgulas in height; नव-अङ्गुल-लसत्-मुखाम् (nava-aṅgula-lasat-mukhām) - having a radiant face measuring nine aṅgulas; सु-वृत्त-त्रि-अङ्गुल-ग्रीवाम् (su-vr̥tta-tri-aṅgula-grīvām) - having a well-rounded neck measuring three aṅgulas; आ + स्तनात् (ā + stanāt) - as far as the breast; च (ca) - and; षट्-अङ्गुलाम् (ṣaṭ-aṅgulām) - measuring six aṅgulas;]
From the face upward, it should measure two aṅgulas in height. Its radiant face should measure nine aṅgulas, its well-rounded neck three aṅgulas, and the distance to the breast six aṅgulas. (3)

पञ्चादशाङ्गुलां नाभेरा सार्धदशकाङ्गुलाम्। वृषणादामूलतश्च सार्धद्व्यङ्गुलमायताम् ॥४॥
pañcādaśāṅgulāṁ nābhērā sārdhadaśakāṅgulām। vr̥ṣaṇādāmūlataśca sārdhadvyaṅgulamāyatām ॥4॥
[पञ्चादशाङ्गुलाम् (pañcādaśāṅgulām) - fifteen aṅgulas in measure; नाभेः + आ (nābhēḥ + ā) - as far as the navel; सार्धदशकाङ्गुलाम् (sārdhadaśakāṅgulām) - ten and a half aṅgulas in measure; वृषणात् + आ (vr̥ṣaṇāt + ā) - as far as the scrotum; मूलतः + च (mūlataḥ + ca) - and from the base; सार्धद्व्यङ्गुलम् (sārdhadvyaṅgulam) - two and a half aṅgulas; आयताम् (āyatām) - extending;]
It should measure fifteen aṅgulas to the navel, ten and a half aṅgulas to the scrotum, and extend two and a half aṅgulas from the base. (4)

तावदा गुदतो दीर्घां चैत्यादाष्टादशाङ्गुलाम्। तथा द्व्यङ्गुलचैत्यां च द्वाविंशज्जङ्घया युताम् ॥५॥
tāvadā gudatō dīrghāṁ caityādāṣṭādaśāṅgulām। tathā dvyaṅgulacaityāṁ ca dvāviṁśajjaṅghayā yutām ॥5॥
[तावत् (tāvat) - that far; आ गुदतः (ā gudataḥ) - as far as the anus; दीर्घाम् (dīrghām) - extending in length; चैत्यात् (caityāt) - from the caitya prominence; अष्टादश-अङ्गुलाम् (aṣṭādaśa-aṅgulām) - measuring eighteen aṅgulas; तथा (tathā) - likewise; द्वि-अङ्गुल-चैत्याम् (dvi-aṅgula-caityām) - having a two-aṅgula caitya prominence; च (ca) - and; द्वाविंशत्-जङ्घया (dvāviṁśat-jaṅghayā) - with a shank measuring twenty-two aṅgulas; युताम् (yutām) - furnished;]
The distance to the anus should be the same. From the caitya prominence, it should measure eighteen aṅgulas; the prominence itself should measure two aṅgulas, and the shank twenty-two aṅgulas. (5)

आरभ्य गुल्फमध्यं च सहार्धचतुरङ्गुलाम्। षडङ्गुलोच्चप्रपदां सार्धद्व्यङ्गुलमेव च ॥६॥
ārabhya gulphamadhyaṁ ca sahārdhacaturaṅgulām। ṣaḍaṅgulōccaprapadāṁ sārdhadvyaṅgulamēva ca ॥6॥
[आरभ्य (ārabhya) - beginning from; गुल्फ + मध्यम् (gulpha + madhyam) - the middle of the ankle; च (ca) - and; सहार्ध + चतुर् + अङ्गुलाम् (sahārdha + catur + aṅgulām) - measuring four and a half fingerbreadths; षट् + अङ्गुल + उच्च + प्रपदाम् (ṣaṭ + aṅgula + ucca + prapadām) - having a forefoot six fingerbreadths high; सार्ध + द्वि + अङ्गुलम् (sārdha + dvi + aṅgulam) - two and a half fingerbreadths; एव (ēva) - precisely; च (ca) - and;]
प्रपदोच्चयुतामन्ते द्व्यङ्गुलप्रपदोच्छ्रयाम्। त्र्यङ्गुलद्व्यङ्गुलामर्धहीनमध्याङ्गुलामपि ॥७॥
prapadōccayutāmantē dvyaṅgulaprapadōcchrayām। tryaṅguladvyaṅgulāmardhahīnamadhyāṅgulāmapi ॥7॥
[प्रपद + उच्च + युताम् (prapada + ucca + yutām) - including the height of the forefoot; अन्ते (antē) - at the end; द्व्यङ्गुल + प्रपद + उच्छ्रयाम् (dvyaṅgula + prapada + ucchrayām) - having a forefoot rise of two aṅgulas; त्र्यङ्गुल + द्व्यङ्गुलाम् (tryaṅgula + dvyaṅgulām) - having a second toe three aṅgulas long; अर्ध + हीन + मध्याङ्गुलाम् (ardha + hīna + madhyāṅgulām) - having a middle toe shorter by half an aṅgula; अपि (api) - also;]
From the middle of the ankle, it should measure four and a half fingerbreadths. The forefoot should be six fingerbreadths high and measure exactly two and a half fingerbreadths at the end, including its height. Its rise should be two aṅgulas; the second toe should be three aṅgulas long, and the middle toe half an aṅgula shorter. (6–7)

त्रिपदाङ्गुलहीनान्यां ततस्तादृशतत्पराम्। पादोनोच्चाङ्गुष्ठनखां तदर्धतदनन्तराम् ॥८॥
tripadāṅgulahīnānyāṁ tatastādr̥śatatparām। pādōnōccāṅguṣṭhanakhāṁ tadardhatadanantarām ॥8॥
[त्रिपद्-अङ्गुल-हीनाम् (tripad-aṅgula-hīnām) - shorter by three quarters of an aṅgula; अन्याम् (anyām) - another toe; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तादृश-तत्पराम् (tādr̥śa-tatparām) - with the one beyond it similar to that; पादोन-उच्च-अङ्गुष्ठ-नखाम् (pādōna-ucca-aṅguṣṭha-nakhām) - having a big-toe nail three quarters of an aṅgula high; तदर्ध (tadardha) - half of that; तदनन्तराम् (tadanantarām) - having the one immediately next to it;]
The next toe should be three-quarters of an aṅgula shorter, and the toe beyond it should be the same length. The big toenail should be three-quarters of an aṅgula high, and the next nail half as high. (8)

क्रमशः पादहीनान्यां रक्तपादनखां शुभाम्। विस्तारः प्रपदस्यापि षडङ्गुल उदाहृतः ॥९॥
kramaśaḥ pādahīnānyāṁ raktapādanakhāṁ śubhām। vistāraḥ prapadasyāpi ṣaḍaṅgula udāhr̥taḥ ॥9॥
[क्रमशः (kramaśaḥ) - successively; पाद-हीन-अन्याम् (pāda-hīna-anyām) - each subsequent one a quarter less; रक्त-पाद-नखाम् (rakta-pāda-nakhām) - having red toenails; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious; विस्तारः (vistāraḥ) - breadth; प्रपदस्य (prapadasya) - of the forepart of the foot; अपि (api) - also; षडङ्गुलः (ṣaḍaṅgulaḥ) - six aṅgulas; उदाहृतः (udāhr̥taḥ) - is stated;]
Each succeeding toenail should be one-quarter shorter than the preceding one. The auspicious image should have red toenails, and the forepart of the foot should be six aṅgulas wide. (9)

अङ्गुष्ठपरिणाहस्तु चतुरङ्गुल ईरितः। त्र्यङ्गुलं तु तदन्यस्य व्रीह्यार्धोनाः क्रमात् पराः ॥१०॥
aṅguṣṭhapariṇāhastu caturaṅgula īritaḥ। tryaṅgulaṁ tu tadanyasya vrīhyārdhōnāḥ kramāt parāḥ ॥10॥
[अङ्गुष्ठ-परिणाहः (aṅguṣṭha-pariṇāhaḥ) - circumference of the big toe; तु (tu) - as for; चतुर्-अङ्गुलः (catur-aṅgulaḥ) - four aṅgulas; ईरितः (īritaḥ) - is stated; त्रि-अङ्गुलम् (tri-aṅgulam) - three aṅgulas; तु (tu) - however; तद्-अन्यस्य (tad-anyasya) - of the one next to it; व्रीहि-अर्ध-ऊनाः (vrīhi-ardha-ūnāḥ) - less by half a grain of rice; क्रमात् (kramāt) - successively; पराः (parāḥ) - the subsequent ones;]
The circumference of the big toe is said to be four aṅgulas, and that of the next toe three aṅgulas. The subsequent toes should each be half a grain of rice smaller in circumference than the preceding one. (10)

दशाङ्गुलं जङ्घमूलं मध्यं तु त्र्यङ्गुलाधिकम्। सप्तादशाङ्गुलं तूर्ध्वं जानुरष्टादशाङ्गुलः ॥११॥
daśāṅgulaṁ jaṅghamūlaṁ madhyaṁ tu tryaṅgulādhikam। saptādaśāṅgulaṁ tūrdhvaṁ jānuraṣṭādaśāṅgulaḥ ॥11॥
[दशाङ्गुलम् (daśāṅgulam) - ten aṅgulas in circumference; जङ्घमूलम् (jaṅghamūlam) - the base of the lower leg; मध्यम् (madhyam) - the middle; तु (tu) - but; त्र्यङ्गुलाधिकम् (tryaṅgulādhikam) - three aṅgulas greater; सप्तादशाङ्गुलम् (saptādaśāṅgulam) - seventeen aṅgulas in circumference; तु (tu) - while; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - the upper part; जानुः (jānuḥ) - the knee; अष्टादशाङ्गुलः (aṣṭādaśāṅgulaḥ) - eighteen aṅgulas in circumference;]
The lower leg should measure ten aṅgulas in circumference at the base and three aṅgulas more at the middle. At the upper part it should measure seventeen aṅgulas, and at the knee eighteen aṅgulas. (11)

ऊर्वन्तोपि तथा ज्ञेयो मध्यं द्विर्द्वादशाङ्गुलम्। चतुरङ्गुलाधिकं मूलं गुह्यं सार्धचतुष्टयम् ॥१२॥
ūrvantōpi tathā jñēyō madhyaṁ dvirdvādaśāṅgulam। caturaṅgulādhikaṁ mūlaṁ guhyaṁ sārdhacatuṣṭayam ॥12॥
[ऊरु + अन्तः + अपि (ūru + antaḥ + api) - the end of the thigh also; तथा (tathā) - likewise; ज्ञेयः (jñēyaḥ) - is to be understood; मध्यम् (madhyam) - the middle; द्विः + द्वादशाङ्गुलम् (dviḥ + dvādaśāṅgulam) - twice twelve aṅgulas; चतुर् + अङ्गुल + अधिकम् (catur + aṅgula + adhikam) - four aṅgulas greater; मूलम् (mūlam) - the root; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - the genital organ; सार्ध + चतुष्टयम् (sārdha + catuṣṭayam) - four and a half aṅgulas;]
सार्धत्रयं परीणाहाद् वृषणं चतुरङ्गुलम्। सप्ताङ्गुलं परीणाहात् वृत्तं प्रोक्तं समस्तशः ॥१३॥
sārdhatrayaṁ parīṇāhād vr̥ṣaṇaṁ caturaṅgulam। saptāṅgulaṁ parīṇāhāt vr̥ttaṁ prōktaṁ samastaśaḥ ॥13॥
[सार्धत्रयम् (sārdhatrayam) - three and a half aṅgulas; परीणाहाद् (parīṇāhād) - in circumference; वृषणम् (vr̥ṣaṇam) - the scrotum; च (ca) - and; चतुरङ्गुलम् (caturaṅgulam) - measuring four aṅgulas; सप्ताङ्गुलम् (saptāṅgulam) - measuring seven aṅgulas; परीणाहात् (parīṇāhāt) - in circumference; वृत्तम् (vr̥ttam) - round; प्रोक्तम् (prōktam) - is said to be; समस्तशः (samastaśaḥ) - throughout;]
The end of the thigh should likewise measure eighteen aṅgulas; its middle should measure twenty-four aṅgulas, and its root four aṅgulas more. The genital organ should measure four and a half aṅgulas and three and a half aṅgulas in circumference. The scrotum should measure four aṅgulas, with a circumference of seven aṅgulas, and should be round throughout. (12–13)

अष्टत्रिंशाङ्गुलं कट्याः परीणाह उदाहृतः। सुवृत्तत्वं तथा श्रोण्योः पीनत्वं च समस्तशः ॥१४॥
aṣṭatriṁśāṅgulaṁ kaṭyāḥ parīṇāha udāhr̥taḥ। suvr̥ttatvaṁ tathā śrōṇyōḥ pīnatvaṁ ca samastaśaḥ ॥14॥
[अष्टत्रिंशाङ्गुलम् (aṣṭatriṁśāṅgulam) - measuring thirty-eight finger-breadths; कट्याः (kaṭyāḥ) - of the waist; परीणाहः (parīṇāhaḥ) - circumference; उदाहृतः (udāhr̥taḥ) - is stated; सुवृत्तत्वम् (suvr̥ttatvam) - perfect roundness; तथा (tathā) - likewise; श्रोण्योः (śrōṇyōḥ) - of both hips; पीनत्वम् (pīnatvam) - fullness; च (ca) - and; समस्तशः (samastaśaḥ) - throughout;]
The waist should measure thirty-eight fingerbreadths in circumference, and both hips should be perfectly rounded and full throughout. (14)

विस्तारश्च तथा कट्याः सुप्रतिष्ठितता पदोः। कट्याश्चैवाङ्गुलाधिक्यं नाभेरध उदाहृतम् ॥१५॥
vistāraśca tathā kaṭyāḥ supratiṣṭhitatā padōḥ। kaṭyāścaivāṅgulādhikyaṁ nābhēradha udāhr̥tam ॥15॥
[विस्तारः (vistāraḥ) - breadth; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; कट्याः (kaṭyāḥ) - of the waist; सुप्रतिष्ठितता (supratiṣṭhitatā) - firm placement; पदोः (padōḥ) - of the feet; कट्याः (kaṭyāḥ) - over the waist; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; अङ्गुल + आधिक्यम् (aṅgula + ādhikyam) - an excess of one aṅgula; नाभेः अधः (nābhēḥ adhaḥ) - below the navel; उदाहृतम् (udāhr̥tam) - is stated;]
The breadth of the waist and the firm placement of the feet are likewise prescribed. Below the navel, the measurement is said to exceed that of the waist by one aṅgula. (15)

नाभिः सार्धाङ्गुलश्चैव गम्भीरोर्धाङ्गुलोन्नतः। वृत्तः प्रदक्षिणश्चैव द्विचत्वारिंशदङ्गुलम् ॥१६॥
nābhiḥ sārdhāṅgulaścaiva gambhīrōrdhāṅgulōnnataḥ। vr̥ttaḥ pradakṣiṇaścaiva dvicatvāriṁśadaṅgulam ॥16॥
[नाभिः (nābhiḥ) - the navel; सार्धाङ्गुलः (sārdhāṅgulaḥ) - one and a half aṅgulas deep; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and indeed; गम्भीरः (gambhīraḥ) - deep; अर्धाङ्गुल + उन्नतः (ardhāṅgula + unnataḥ) - raised by half an aṅgula; वृत्तः (vr̥ttaḥ) - round; प्रदक्षिणः (pradakṣiṇaḥ) - turning clockwise; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and indeed; द्विचत्वारिंशत् + अङ्गुलम् (dvicatvāriṁśat + aṅgulam) - measuring forty-two aṅgulas;]
The navel should be one and a half aṅgulas deep, project half an aṅgula, be round, and turn clockwise; it should measure forty-two aṅgulas. (16)

मध्यं स्तने परीणाहः षडङ्गुलमतोधिकः। एकोनविंशाङ्गुलं तदुरोविस्तारलक्षणम् ॥१७॥
madhyaṁ stanē parīṇāhaḥ ṣaḍaṅgulamatōdhikaḥ। ēkōnaviṁśāṅgulaṁ tadurōvistāralakṣaṇam ॥17॥
[मध्यम् (madhyam) - at the middle; स्तने (stanē) - at the breast; परीणाहः (parīṇāhaḥ) - circumference; षडङ्गुलम् (ṣaḍaṅgulam) - by six aṅgulas; अतः (ataḥ) - than that; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - greater; एकोनविंशाङ्गुलम् (ēkōnaviṁśāṅgulam) - nineteen aṅgulas; तत् (tat) - that; उरः-विस्तार-लक्षणम् (uraḥ-vistāra-lakṣaṇam) - measurement of the breadth of the chest;]
At the middle of the breast, the circumference should be six aṅgulas greater than that. The chest should be nineteen aṅgulas wide. (17)

पादोनमङ्गुलं चैव भुजाभ्यां सह सार्धकम्। अंसयोर्विस्तृतिश्चैव पृथगष्टाङ्गुला मता ॥१८॥
pādōnamaṅgulaṁ caiva bhujābhyāṁ saha sārdhakam। aṁsayōrvistr̥tiścaiva pr̥thagaṣṭāṅgulā matā ॥18॥
[पादोनम् (pādōnam) - less by one quarter; अङ्गुलम् (aṅgulam) - an aṅgula; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; भुजाभ्याम् (bhujābhyām) - the two arms; सह (saha) - together with; सार्धकम् (sārdhakam) - with an additional half; अंसयोः (aṁsayōḥ) - of the two shoulders; विस्तृतिः (vistr̥tiḥ) - breadth; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; पृथक् (pr̥thak) - each separately; अष्टाङ्गुला (aṣṭāṅgulā) - eight aṅgulas; मता (matā) - is considered;]
Including both arms, this measurement is also one and a quarter aṅgulas; each shoulder is considered to be eight aṅgulas wide. (18)

सप्ताङ्गुलोच्छ्रयः कक्षादुपरि स्कन्धयोर्मतः। अष्टत्रिंशाङ्गुलञ्चैव हस्तयोर्मानमुच्यते ॥१९॥
saptāṅgulōcchrayaḥ kakṣādupari skandhayōrmataḥ। aṣṭatriṁśāṅgulañcaiva hastayōrmānamucyatē ॥19॥
[सप्ताङ्गुल + उच्छ्रयः (saptāṅgula + ucchrayaḥ) - an elevation of seven aṅgulas; कक्षात् + उपरि (kakṣāt + upari) - upward from the armpit; स्कन्धयोः (skandhayōḥ) - of the shoulders; मतः (mataḥ) - is prescribed; अष्टत्रिंशाङ्गुलम् (aṣṭatriṁśāṅgulam) - thirty-eight aṅgulas; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and precisely; हस्तयोः (hastayōḥ) - of the arms; मानम् (mānam) - measurement; उच्यते (ucyatē) - is stated;]
The shoulders should rise seven aṅgulas above the armpits, and the arms should measure precisely thirty-eight aṅgulas. (19)

अष्टादशाङ्गुलो बाह्वोः परिणाह उदाहृतः। क्रमादूनं तदन्ते च सार्धाष्टाङ्गुलमीरितम् ॥२०॥
aṣṭādaśāṅgulō bāhvōḥ pariṇāha udāhr̥taḥ। kramādūnaṁ tadantē ca sārdhāṣṭāṅgulamīritam ॥20॥
[अष्टादश-अङ्गुलः (aṣṭādaśa-aṅgulaḥ) - eighteen aṅgulas; बाह्वोः (bāhvōḥ) - of the two upper arms; परिणाहः (pariṇāhaḥ) - circumference; उदाहृतः (udāhr̥taḥ) - is stated; क्रमात् (kramāt) - gradually; ऊनम् (ūnam) - decreasing; तत्-अन्ते (tat-antē) - at their end; च (ca) - and; सार्ध-अष्ट-अङ्गुलम् (sārdha-aṣṭa-aṅgulam) - eight and a half aṅgulas; ईरितम् (īritam) - is declared;]
The upper arms should measure eighteen aṅgulas in circumference, gradually tapering to eight and a half aṅgulas at their ends. (20)

साङ्गुलस्तु तलः सार्धनवाङ्गुल उदाहृतः। समं तदुभयं ज्ञेयं तथैव तलविस्तृतिः ॥२१॥
sāṅgulastu talaḥ sārdhanavāṅgula udāhr̥taḥ। samaṁ tadubhayaṁ jñēyaṁ tathaiva talavistr̥tiḥ ॥21॥
[साङ्गुलः (sāṅgulaḥ) - including the fingers; तु (tu) - but; तलः (talaḥ) - the palm; सार्ध + नव + अङ्गुलः (sārdha + nava + aṅgulaḥ) - nine and a half aṅgulas in measure; उदाहृतः (udāhr̥taḥ) - is stated; समम् (samam) - equal; तत् + उभयम् (tat + ubhayam) - both of them; ज्ञेयम् (jñēyam) - should be understood; तथा + एव (tathā + ēva) - likewise; तल + विस्तृतिः (tala + vistr̥tiḥ) - the breadth of the palm;]
The palm, including the fingers, is said to measure nine and a half aṅgulas. The two are to be understood as equal; the same applies to the breadth of the palm. (21)

अर्धाङ्गुलोन्नता मध्या द्वयोः सार्धाङ्गुलोन्नता। कनिष्ठिकायास्तस्यास्तु व्रीहिमात्राधिकः परः ॥२२॥
ardhāṅgulōnnatā madhyā dvayōḥ sārdhāṅgulōnnatā। kaniṣṭhikāyāstasyāstu vrīhimātrādhikaḥ paraḥ ॥22॥

The middle finger projects half an aṅgula beyond the two and one and a half aṅgulas beyond the little finger; the other finger exceeds the latter by the measure of a grain of rice. (22)

सार्धत्रयपरीणाहौ मध्यज्येष्ठावुदाहृतौ। अन्यौ व्रीहितदर्धोनावन्या सार्धद्वयाङ्गुला ॥२३॥
sārdhatrayaparīṇāhau madhyajyēṣṭhāvudāhr̥tau। anyau vrīhitadardhōnāvanyā sārdhadvayāṅgulā ॥23॥
[सार्धत्रय-परीणाहौ (sārdhatraya-parīṇāhau) - three and a half aṅgulas in circumference; मध्य-ज्येष्ठौ (madhya-jyēṣṭhau) - the middle and eldest; उदाहृतौ (udāhr̥tau) - are stated; अन्यौ (anyau) - the other two; व्रीहि-तदर्ध-ऊनौ (vrīhi-tadardha-ūnau) - smaller by one and a half rice-grains; अन्या (anyā) - the other one; सार्धद्वय-अङ्गुला (sārdhadvaya-aṅgulā) - two and a half aṅgulas;]
The middle and largest fingers are said to be three and a half aṅgulas in circumference. The other two are smaller by one and a half grains of rice, while the remaining finger measures two and a half aṅgulas. (23)

पादोनान्तपरीणाहाः सर्वे ज्येष्ठां विना स्मृताः। वक्षोविस्तारसदृशः परिणाहो गलस्य च ॥२४॥
pādōnāntaparīṇāhāḥ sarvē jyēṣṭhāṁ vinā smr̥tāḥ। vakṣōvistārasadr̥śaḥ pariṇāhō galasya ca ॥24॥

Except for the largest digit, all are said to have circumferences at their tips smaller by one quarter. The circumference of the neck equals the breadth of the chest. (24)

ललाटकुक्षिकण्ठास्तु दीर्घरेखात्रयान्विताः। वृत्तो गलो बाहवश्च स्तनावङ्गुलयस्तथा ॥२५॥
lalāṭakukṣikaṇṭhāstu dīrgharēkhātrayānvitāḥ। vr̥ttō galō bāhavaśca stanāvaṅgulayastathā ॥25॥

The forehead, abdomen, and throat bear three long lines, while the neck, arms, breasts, and fingers are rounded. (25)

रक्तास्तलनखाश्चैव नेत्रान्तोधर एव च। उत्तरोष्ठश्च जिह्वा च नखौ पादोनकाङ्गुलौ ॥२६॥
raktāstalanakhāścaiva nētrāntōdhara ēva ca। uttarōṣṭhaśca jihvā ca nakhau pādōnakāṅgulau ॥26॥
[रक्ताः (raktāḥ) - red; तल + नखाः (tala + nakhāḥ) - palms and soles and nails; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and likewise; नेत्र + अन्तः (nētra + antaḥ) - corners of the eyes; अधरः (adharaḥ) - lower lip; एव + च (ēva + ca) - and likewise; उत्तर + ओष्ठः (uttara + ōṣṭhaḥ) - upper lip; च (ca) - and; जिह्वा (jihvā) - tongue; च (ca) - and; नखौ (nakhau) - the two nails; पादोनक + अङ्गुलौ (pādōnaka + aṅgulau) - each measuring three-quarters of an aṅgula;]
The palms, soles, and nails are red, as are the corners of the eyes, both lips, and the tongue. The two nails each measure three-quarters of an aṅgula. (26)

समा मानेन नासाया उच्चत्वेनैव मापने। अर्धाङ्गुलाधिकं सर्वं मुखस्य तु भविष्यति ॥२८॥
samā mānēna nāsāyā uccatvēnaiva māpanē। ardhāṅgulādhikaṁ sarvaṁ mukhasya tu bhaviṣyati ॥28॥
[समा (samā) - equal; मानेन (mānēna) - in dimension; नासायाः (nāsāyāḥ) - of the nose; उच्चत्वेन + एव (uccatvēna + ēva) - specifically in height; मापने (māpanē) - in measurement; अर्धाङ्गुल + अधिकम् (ardhāṅgula + adhikam) - greater by half an aṅgula; सर्वम् (sarvam) - the total measure; मुखस्य (mukhasya) - of the face; तु (tu) - but; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
The two middle nails each measure half an aṅgula, while the others become successively smaller by one eighth. Measured vertically, the portion below the nose, the nose itself, and the forehead are equal in size; the total measurement of the face is half an aṅgula greater. (27–28)

The mouth likewise measures four aṅgulas. The lower lip is said to measure one and a half grains of rice, and the upper lip one grain; the region above it is equal in size to the lower lip. (29)

The distance immediately below the lower lip is said to be one and a half aṅgulas, while the two lateral spans from the mouth to the ears measure six aṅgulas. (30)

saptāṅgulaṁ nāsikāyāḥ pārśvamā karṇataḥ smr̥tam। sapādāṅgulamuccā ca nāsikā parikīrtitā ॥31॥
[सप्ताङ्गुलम् (saptāṅgulam) - seven aṅgulas; नासिकायाः (nāsikāyāḥ) - from the nose; पार्श्वम् (pārśvam) - the lateral distance; आ (ā) - as far as; कर्णतः (karṇataḥ) - the ear; स्मृतम् (smr̥tam) - is prescribed; सपादाङ्गुलम् (sapādāṅgulam) - one and a quarter aṅgulas; उच्चा (uccā) - high; च (ca) - and; नासिका (nāsikā) - the nose; परिकीर्तिता (parikīrtitā) - is declared;]
The lateral distance from the nose to the ear is prescribed as seven aṅgulas, and the nose is said to be one and a quarter aṅgulas high. (31)

Each nostril measures half an aṅgula, and the central portion is also said to measure half an aṅgula. The nose is one grain of rice wide, and the eyes are three aṅgulas long. (32)

अङ्गुलं चैव विस्तीर्णे फुल्लेर्धं च तदन्यथा। चतुरङ्गुलौ भ्रुवौ चैव तथार्धाङ्गुलविस्तृतौ ॥३३॥

[अङ्गुलम् (aṅgulam) - one aṅgula; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and indeed; विस्तीर्णे (vistīrṇē) - wide; फुल्ले (phullē) - when open; अर्धम् (ardham) - half an aṅgula; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that measurement; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; चतुर्-अङ्गुलौ (catur-aṅgulau) - each four aṅgulas long; भ्रुवौ (bhruvau) - the two eyebrows; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and indeed; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अर्ध-अङ्गुल-विस्तृतौ (ardha-aṅgula-vistr̥tau) - each half an aṅgula wide;]
When open, the eyes are one aṅgula wide; otherwise, they are half an aṅgula wide. Each eyebrow is four aṅgulas long and half an aṅgula wide. (33)

असंहतौ च निबिडौ तथा पक्ष्म सुनीलकम्। कर्णौ च त्र्यङ्गुलौ सार्धद्वयविस्तारसंयुतौ ॥३४॥
asaṁhatau ca nibiḍau tathā pakṣma sunīlakam। karṇau ca tryaṅgulau sārdhadvayavistārasaṁyutau ॥34॥
[असंहतौ (asaṁhatau) - unjoined; च (ca) - and; निबिडौ (nibiḍau) - dense; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पक्ष्म (pakṣma) - eyelashes; सुनीलकम् (sunīlakam) - very dark blue; कर्णौ (karṇau) - the two ears; च (ca) - and; त्रि-अङ्गुलौ (tri-aṅgulau) - three aṅgulas in length; सार्ध-द्वय-विस्तार-संयुतौ (sārdha-dvaya-vistāra-saṁyutau) - having a breadth of two and a half aṅgulas;]
The eyebrows are separate and dense, and the eyelashes are very dark blue. The ears are three aṅgulas long and two and a half aṅgulas wide. (34)

सकुण्डलं तावदेव विवरं सम्प्रकीर्तितम्। तथा द्व्यङ्गुलविस्तारो लताभ्यां सह कथ्यते ॥३५॥
sakuṇḍalaṁ tāvadēva vivaraṁ samprakīrtitam। tathā dvyaṅgulavistārō latābhyāṁ saha kathyatē ॥35॥
[स + कुण्डलम् (sa + kuṇḍalam) - together with the earring; तावत् एव (tāvat ēva) - exactly that same extent; विवरम् (vivaram) - the opening; सम्प्रकीर्तितम् (samprakīrtitam) - is declared; तथा (tathā) - likewise; द्वि-अङ्गुल-विस्तारः (dvi-aṅgula-vistāraḥ) - a breadth of two aṅgulas; लताभ्याम् (latābhyām) - the two ornamental strands; सह (saha) - together with; कथ्यते (kathyatē) - is stated;]
The opening, together with the earring, is said to be exactly the same size. Its breadth, including the two ornamental strands, is likewise said to be two aṅgulas. (35)

कर्णपूरयुतौ कर्णावुत्पलाभ्यां च संयुतौ। नीलालकसहस्रेण युक्तं तन्मुखपङ्कजम् ॥३६॥
karṇapūrayutau karṇāvutpalābhyāṁ ca saṁyutau। nīlālakasahasrēṇa yuktaṁ tanmukhapaṅkajam ॥36॥
[कर्णपूर + युतौ (karṇapūra + yutau) - furnished with ear ornaments; कर्णौ (karṇau) - the two ears; उत्पलाभ्याम् (utpalābhyām) - with two lotuses; च (ca) - and; संयुतौ (saṁyutau) - adorned; नील + अलक + सहस्रेण (nīla + alaka + sahasrēṇa) - with a thousand dark curls; युक्तम् (yuktam) - endowed; तत् + मुख + पङ्कजम् (tat + mukha + paṅkajam) - that lotus-face;]
The ears bear ear ornaments and are adorned with two lotuses; the lotus-like face has a thousand dark curls. (36)

ललाटं सुविशालं च तथा सार्धनवाङ्गुलम्। विस्तारो मूर्ध्नि वृत्तं च शिरः छत्राकृतिः स्मृतम् ॥३७॥
lalāṭaṁ suviśālaṁ ca tathā sārdhanavāṅgulam। vistārō mūrdhni vr̥ttaṁ ca śiraḥ chatrākr̥tiḥ smr̥tam ॥37॥
[ललाटम् (lalāṭam) - the forehead; सुविशालम् (suviśālam) - very broad; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सार्ध + नव + अङ्गुलम् (sārdha + nava + aṅgulam) - nine and a half aṅgulas; विस्तारः (vistāraḥ) - in breadth; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - at the crown; वृत्तम् (vr̥ttam) - rounded; च (ca) - and; शिरः (śiraḥ) - the head; छत्र + आकृतिः (chatra + ākr̥tiḥ) - umbrella-shaped; स्मृतम् (smr̥tam) - is prescribed;]
The forehead is very broad, measuring nine and a half aṅgulas across. The head is rounded at the crown and is said to be shaped like an umbrella. (37)

दीर्घाश्च कुञ्चिताग्राश्च नीलाश्च केशा हरेर्मताः। मुखमानेन चैवोच्चं किरीटं केशवस्य हि ॥३८॥
dīrghāśca kuñcitāgrāśca nīlāśca kēśā harērmatāḥ। mukhamānēna caivōccaṁ kirīṭaṁ kēśavasya hi ॥38॥
[दीर्घाः (dīrghāḥ) - long; च (ca) - and; कुञ्चित-अग्राः (kuñcita-agrāḥ) - curled at the tips; च (ca) - and; नीलाः (nīlāḥ) - blue-black; च (ca) - and; केशाः (kēśāḥ) - hair; हरेः (harēḥ) - of Hari; मताः (matāḥ) - are prescribed; मुख-मानेन (mukha-mānēna) - by the measure of the face; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - exactly; उच्चम् (uccam) - high; किरीटम् (kirīṭam) - crown; केशवस्य (kēśavasya) - of Keśava; हि (hi) - indeed;]
Hari’s hair should be long, blue-black, and curled at the tips. Keśava’s crown should be exactly as high as his face. (38)

कुण्डले मकराकारे वक्षश्चैव सकौस्तुभम्। सश्रीवत्सं दक्षिणतः पीनतुङ्गमुदाहृतम् ॥३९॥
kuṇḍalē makarākārē vakṣaścaiva sakaustubham। saśrīvatsaṁ dakṣiṇataḥ pīnatuṅgamudāhr̥tam ॥39॥
[कुण्डले (kuṇḍalē) - the two earrings; मकर-आकारे (makara-ākārē) - makara-shaped; वक्षः (vakṣaḥ) - the chest; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; स-कौस्तुभम् (sa-kaustubham) - bearing the Kaustubha; स-श्रीवत्सम् (sa-śrīvatsam) - bearing the Śrīvatsa; दक्षिणतः (dakṣiṇataḥ) - on the right; पीन-तुङ्गम् (pīna-tuṅgam) - full and prominent; उदाहृतम् (udāhr̥tam) - is described;]
The earrings are shaped like makaras. The chest is full and prominent; it bears the Kaustubha and, on the right, the Śrīvatsa. (39)

हारग्रैवेयसहितमुपवीतयुतं तथा। बाहवश्च सकेयूरकङ्कणाङ्गदमुद्रिकाः ॥४०॥
hāragraivēyasahitamupavītayutaṁ tathā। bāhavaśca sakēyūrakaṅkaṇāṅgadamudrikāḥ ॥40॥
[हार (hāra) - necklaces; ग्रैवेय (graivēya) - neck ornaments; सहितम् (sahitam) - furnished with; उपवीत (upavīta) - sacred thread; युतम् (yutam) - provided with; तथा (tathā) - likewise; बाहवः (bāhavaḥ) - the arms; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - furnished with; केयूर (kēyūra) - upper-arm ornaments; कङ्कण (kaṅkaṇa) - bracelets; अङ्गद (aṅgada) - armlets; मुद्रिकाः (mudrikāḥ) - rings;]
The chest is also adorned with necklaces and neck ornaments and provided with a sacred thread. The arms bear upper-arm ornaments, bracelets, armlets, and rings. (40)

समध्यबन्धं मध्यं च नितम्बे पीतमम्बरम्। काञ्चीगुणश्च पदयोर्नूपुरे चातिसुस्वने ॥४१॥
samadhyabandhaṁ madhyaṁ ca nitambē pītamambaram। kāñcīguṇaśca padayōrnūpurē cātisusvanē ॥41॥
[स-मध्यबन्धम् (sa-madhyabandham) - furnished with a waist-band; मध्यम् (madhyam) - waist; च (ca) - and; नितम्बे (nitambē) - at the hips; पीतम् (pītam) - yellow; अम्बरम् (ambaram) - garment; काञ्ची-गुणः (kāñcī-guṇaḥ) - girdle-cord; च (ca) - and; पदयोः (padayōḥ) - on both feet; नूपुरे (nūpurē) - two anklets; च (ca) - and; अति-सुस्वने (ati-susvanē) - exceedingly sweet-sounding;]
The waist should be encircled by a waistband, with a yellow garment at the hips and a girdle cord; the two feet should bear anklets of exceptionally sweet sound. (41)

अङ्गुलीयानि च पदोः कृतिभिः साधु कारयेत्। सोत्तरीयं च चक्राद्यैरायुधैश्च समन्वितम् ॥४२॥
aṅgulīyāni ca padōḥ kr̥tibhiḥ sādhu kārayēt। sōttarīyaṁ ca cakrādyairāyudhaiśca samanvitam ॥42॥
[अङ्गुलीयानि (aṅgulīyāni) - toe-rings; च (ca) - also; पदोः (padōḥ) - on both feet; कृतिभिः (kr̥tibhiḥ) - by skilled artisans; साधु (sādhu) - properly; कारयेत् (kārayēt) - one should have fashioned; सोत्तरीयम् (sōttarīyam) - furnished with an upper garment; च (ca) - and; चक्राद्यैः (cakrādyaiḥ) - beginning with the discus; आयुधैः (āyudhaiḥ) - with weapons; च (ca) - also; समन्वितम् (samanvitam) - equipped;]
Skilled artisans should properly fashion toe rings for both feet. The figure should also wear an upper garment and be equipped with weapons, beginning with the discus. (42)

अनुन्नतैरविरलैर्दन्तैर्युक्तं च सुस्मितम्। समदृष्टियुतं कार्यं श्लक्ष्णं चैव मनोहरम् ॥४३॥
anunnatairaviralairdantairyuktaṁ ca susmitam। samadr̥ṣṭiyutaṁ kāryaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ caiva manōharam ॥43॥
[अनुन्नतैः (anunnataiḥ) - not protruding; अविरलैः (aviralaiḥ) - closely set; दन्तैः (dantaiḥ) - teeth; युक्तम् (yuktam) - endowed with; च (ca) - and; सुस्मितम् (susmitam) - possessing a pleasing smile; सम-दृष्टि-युतम् (sama-dr̥ṣṭi-yutam) - endowed with a level gaze; कार्यम् (kāryam) - should be made; श्लक्ष्णम् (ślakṣṇam) - smooth; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and indeed; मनोहरम् (manōharam) - charming;]
It should be fashioned with close-set, nonprotruding teeth and a pleasing smile, and should have a level gaze and a smooth, charming appearance. (43)

प्रतिमार्थं व्रजन्पञ्चध्वनिभिर्मङ्गलैर्युतः। गत्वा शुचिस्थलं तत्र शिलां चैव परीक्षयेत् ॥४४॥
pratimārthaṁ vrajanpañcadhvanibhirmaṅgalairyutaḥ। gatvā śucisthalaṁ tatra śilāṁ caiva parīkṣayēt ॥44॥
[प्रतिमा-अर्थम् (pratimā-artham) - for the sake of the image; व्रजन् (vrajan) - proceeding; पञ्च-ध्वनिभिः (pañca-dhvanibhiḥ) - with five sounds; मङ्गलैः (maṅgalaiḥ) - auspicious; युतः (yutaḥ) - accompanied; गत्वा (gatvā) - having reached; शुचि-स्थलम् (śuci-sthalam) - a pure site; तत्र (tatra) - there; शिलाम् (śilām) - the stone; च + एव (ca + ēva) - also indeed; परीक्षयेत् (parīkṣayēt) - should examine;]
When setting out to make the image, he should be accompanied by five auspicious sounds. Once he reaches a pure site, he should examine the stone there. (44)

By noting a difference in sound, he should identify and reject a stone containing an internal inclusion. Having fasted, he should remain, reciting the root mantra and meditating on Viṣṇu. (45)

वार्क्षी चेद्यज्ञवृक्षस्य सारेणैव तु कारयेत्। बलिदानं च सङ्क्षेपविधानेनैव कथ्यते ॥४६॥

If the image is wooden, it should be made solely from the heartwood of a sacrificial tree. Only a concise procedure is given for the bali offering. (46)

अस्य सङ्क्षेपशास्त्रत्वान्न विस्तारविरोधिता। दत्वोपहारं हरये तद्भूतेभ्यो बलिं हरेत् ॥४७॥

प्राच्येभ्यो विष्णुभूतेभ्य इत्याद्यखिलदिक्षु च। आदाय विष्णुभूतेभ्यो लोकपेभ्यस्तथा हरेः ॥४८॥

[अनुज्ञाम् (anujñām) - permission; उद्धरेत् (uddharēt) - one should extract; वृक्षं (vr̥kṣaṁ) - a tree; शिलां (śilāṁ) - a stone; वा (vā) - or; प्रतिमा-कृते (pratimā-kr̥tē) - for making an image; प्रतिमां (pratimāṁ) - an image; पिण्डिकां (piṇḍikāṁ) - a pedestal; पीठं (pīṭhaṁ) - a seat; शिलाभिः (śilābhiḥ) - with stones; तु (tu) - however; त्रि-जातिभिः (tri-jātibhiḥ) - of three classes;]
Because this is a concise treatise, it does not rule out a more elaborate procedure. After presenting an offering to Hari, one should offer bali in every direction to the beings belonging to him, saying, “To the beings of Viṣṇu in the east,” and so forth. After obtaining permission from the beings of Viṣṇu, the guardians of the worlds, and Hari, one should remove a tree or stone for making the image. The image, pedestal, and seat should be made from the three classes of stone. (47–49)

स्वरस्थूलत्वभेदेन पुंस्त्र्याद्या जातिभिः शिलाः। पुंशिला प्रतिमार्थं तु स्त्रीशिलां पीठक्लृप्तये ॥५०॥

Stones fall into male, female, and other classes according to differences in the depth of their sound. A male stone is used for the image, while a female stone is used to fashion the pedestal. (50)

वेदमङ्गलघोषेण वाद्यैस्तत्प्रतिमां हरेत्। प्रागुदक्प्रवणे देशे कुर्याद्देवालयं सुधीः ॥५१॥
vēdamaṅgalaghōṣēṇa vādyaistatpratimāṁ harēt। prāgudakpravaṇē dēśē kuryāddēvālayaṁ sudhīḥ ॥51॥
[वेद-मङ्गल-घोषेण (vēda-maṅgala-ghōṣēṇa) - with the chanting of auspicious Vedic texts; वाद्यैः (vādyaiḥ) - with musical instruments; तत्-प्रतिमाम् (tat-pratimām) - that image; हरेत् (harēt) - he should convey; प्राक्-उदक्-प्रवणे (prāk-udak-pravaṇē) - sloping eastward or northward; देशे (dēśē) - on a site; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should construct; देवालयम् (dēvālayam) - a temple; सुधीः (sudhīḥ) - a wise person;]
He should transport the image amid auspicious Vedic chanting and instrumental music. A wise person should build the temple on a site that slopes eastward or northward. (51)

रामावृते दक्षिणतः पश्चाद्गिर्यग्र एव वा। मध्ये वा ग्रामपुरयोर्विशाले सुशुचौ तथा ॥५२॥

ऐशानीं दिशमेकां तु विनोदकविवर्जिते। जलाशयस्य मध्ये वा शिलावृक्षादिवर्जिते ॥५३॥
aiśānīṁ diśamēkāṁ tu vinōdakavivarjitē। jalāśayasya madhyē vā śilāvr̥kṣādivarjitē ॥53॥
[ऐशानीम् (aiśānīm) - northeastern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; एकाम् (ēkām) - alone; तु (tu) - but; विना (vinā) - excluding; उदक-विवर्जिते (udaka-vivarjitē) - in a place free from water; जलाशयस्य (jalāśayasya) - of a reservoir; मध्ये (madhyē) - in the middle; वा (vā) - or; शिला-वृक्ष-आदि-वर्जिते (śilā-vr̥kṣa-ādi-varjitē) - in a place free from rocks, trees, and the like;]
श्मशानादिकदेशानां विदूरे सुमनोहरे। किष्कुद्वादशतोनूनं कुर्याद्देवालयस्थलम् ॥५४॥
śmaśānādikadēśānāṁ vidūrē sumanōharē। kiṣkudvādaśatōnūnaṁ kuryāddēvālayasthalam ॥54॥
[श्मशान-आदिक-देशानाम् (śmaśāna-ādika-dēśānām) - from places such as cremation grounds; विदूरे (vidūrē) - far away; सुमनोहरे (sumanōharē) - in a very pleasant place; किष्कु-द्वादशतः (kiṣku-dvādaśataḥ) - to the measure of twelve kiṣkus; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - one should establish; देवालय-स्थलम् (dēvālaya-sthalam) - the temple site;]
A temple site measuring twelve kiṣkus should be established in a very pleasant, spacious, and exceptionally clean place, far from cremation grounds and similar locations. It may be in a pleasant enclosed setting on the southern or western side, on a mountain summit, or in the center of a village or city, but the northeastern direction alone should be excluded. It may be on ground free from water or in the middle of a reservoir, at a spot free from rocks, trees, and the like. (52–54)

द्विगुणं चतुर्गुणं वापि शतकिष्कुप्रमाणकम्। कृत्वा भूशोधनं सम्यक् सार्धपुंमानतस्त्वधः ॥५५॥
dviguṇaṁ caturguṇaṁ vāpi śatakiṣkupramāṇakam। kr̥tvā bhūśōdhanaṁ samyak sārdhapuṁmānatastvadhaḥ ॥55॥
[द्विगुणम् (dviguṇam) - twice that extent; चतुर्गुणम् (caturguṇam) - four times that extent; वा + अपि (vā + api) - or even; शत-किष्कु-प्रमाणकम् (śata-kiṣku-pramāṇakam) - measuring one hundred kiṣkus; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having carried out; भू-शोधनम् (bhū-śōdhanam) - purification of the ground; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; सार्ध-पुंमानतः (sārdha-puṁmānataḥ) - to a depth of one and a half man-heights; तु (tu) - but; अधः (adhaḥ) - downward;]
One should properly purify the ground over an area twice or four times that size, or even one hundred kiṣkus, to a depth of one and a half man-heights. (55)

केशाङ्गारस्थिवल्मीकलोष्टाश्मादिविवर्जिते। हरिं तत्रापि सम्पूज्य बलिं दत्वा च पूर्ववत् ॥५६॥
kēśāṅgārasthivalmīkalōṣṭāśmādivivarjitē। hariṁ tatrāpi sampūjya baliṁ datvā ca pūrvavat ॥56॥
[केश + अङ्गार + अस्थि + वल्मीक + लोष्ट + अश्म + आदि + विवर्जिते (kēśa + aṅgāra + asthi + valmīka + lōṣṭa + aśma + ādi + vivarjitē) - on ground free from hair, charcoal, bones, anthills, clods, stones, and the like; हरिम् (harim) - Hari; तत्र + अपि (tatra + api) - there as well; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having duly worshipped; बलिम् (balim) - a ritual offering; दत्वा (datvā) - having offered; च (ca) - and; पूर्ववत् (pūrvavat) - as before;]
The ground should be free from hair, charcoal, bones, anthills, clods, stones, and the like; Hari should then be duly worshipped there and a ritual offering made as before. (56)

मृद्दारुशैलैर्लोहैर्वा कुर्याद्देवालयं दृढम्। दीर्घाश्च कलमास्तिस्रस्तिर्यगष्टयवोदराः ॥५७॥

अङ्गुल्या मध्यरेखायाः समा लक्षणतः स्मृताः। स्वाङ्गुल्या मध्यरेखा तु प्रतिमादिषु लक्षणम् ॥५८॥
aṅgulyā madhyarēkhāyāḥ samā lakṣaṇataḥ smr̥tāḥ। svāṅgulyā madhyarēkhā tu pratimādiṣu lakṣaṇam ॥58॥
[अङ्गुल्या (aṅgulyā) - by the finger measure; मध्यरेखायाः (madhyarēkhāyāḥ) - to the middle line; समाः (samāḥ) - equal; लक्षणतः (lakṣaṇataḥ) - as the defining standard; स्मृताः (smr̥tāḥ) - are traditionally regarded; स्वाङ्गुल्या (svāṅgulyā) - by one's own finger measure; मध्यरेखा (madhyarēkhā) - the middle line; तु (tu) - however; प्रतिमा-आदिषु (pratimā-ādiṣu) - for images and the like; लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - the standard;]
One should then build a sturdy temple of clay, wood, and stone, or of metal. Three kalama grains laid lengthwise and eight barley-grain widths laid crosswise are traditionally considered equal to the middle line of a finger and constitute the defining standard. For images and the like, however, the middle line measured by one’s own finger is the standard. (57–58)

ह्रस्वमध्योच्चभेदेन तत्तन्मानं समस्तशः। प्रादेशहस्तपुरुषमानं सामान्यलक्षणम् ॥५९॥
hrasvamadhyōccabhēdēna tattanmānaṁ samastaśaḥ। prādēśahastapuruṣamānaṁ sāmānyalakṣaṇam ॥59॥

In every case, short, medium, and tall forms are measured respectively by the prādeśa, hasta, and puruṣa; this is the general standard. (59)

प्रतिमाध्यर्धकं द्वारमूर्ध्वमध्यं च विस्तृतिः। प्रतिमार्धप्रमाणेन पीठस्योच्चत्वमिष्यते ॥६०॥
pratimādhyardhakaṁ dvāramūrdhvamadhyaṁ ca vistr̥tiḥ। pratimārdhapramāṇēna pīṭhasyōccatvamiṣyatē ॥60॥
[प्रतिमा + अध्यर्धकम् (pratimā + adhyardhakam) - one and a half times the image; द्वारम् (dvāram) - the doorway; ऊर्ध्व + मध्यम् (ūrdhva + madhyam) - half its height; च (ca) - and; विस्तृतिः (vistr̥tiḥ) - the width; प्रतिमा + अर्ध + प्रमाणेन (pratimā + ardha + pramāṇēna) - by a measure equal to half the image; पीठस्य (pīṭhasya) - of the pedestal; उच्चत्वम् (uccatvam) - the height; इष्यते (iṣyatē) - is prescribed;]
The doorway should be one and a half times as high as the image and half as wide as it is high. The pedestal should be half as high as the image. (60)

उन्नतिः पिण्डिकायास्तु चतुरङ्गुलमानतः। त्र्यङ्गुलं द्व्यङ्गुलं वापि गृहान्तःप्रतिमासमम् ॥६१॥

[उन्नतिः (unnatiḥ) - elevation; पिण्डिकायाः (piṇḍikāyāḥ) - of the pedestal; तु (tu) - however; चतुर्-अङ्गुल-मानतः (catur-aṅgula-mānataḥ) - starting from a measure of four aṅgulas; त्रि-अङ्गुलम् (tri-aṅgulam) - three aṅgulas; द्वि-अङ्गुलम् (dvi-aṅgulam) - two aṅgulas; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; गृह-अन्तः (gr̥ha-antaḥ) - inside the shrine; प्रतिमा-समम् (pratimā-samam) - commensurate with the image;]
The pedestal’s elevation, however, should correspond to the image inside the shrine and may measure four aṅgulas, three aṅgulas, or two. (61)

उच्चं पर्यक् च क्रमश उच्चत्वं मध्यतः स्मृतम्। तावदुच्चं बहिश्चैव यद्येकशिखरं भवेत् ॥६२॥
uccaṁ paryak ca kramaśa uccatvaṁ madhyataḥ smr̥tam। tāvaduccaṁ bahiścaiva yadyēkaśikharaṁ bhavēt ॥62॥
[उच्चम् (uccam) - high; पर्यक् (paryak) - all around; च (ca) - and; क्रमशः (kramaśaḥ) - gradually; उच्चत्वम् (uccatvam) - height; मध्यतः (madhyataḥ) - from the middle; स्मृतम् (smr̥tam) - is prescribed; तावत् उच्चम् (tāvat uccam) - just as high; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside; च एव (ca ēva) - also; यदि (yadi) - if; एक-शिखरम् (ēka-śikharam) - single-spired; भवेत् (bhavēt) - it should be;]
The height should rise gradually all around from the center. If the structure has a single spire, it should reach the same height on the outside. (62)

Within the spire, however, the neck is said to equal the image’s measure, three-quarters or half of that measure, or alternatively one and a half times it. (64)

The vimāna may be circular, lotus-shaped, shaped like an elephant’s back, square, or octagonal. (65)

The pinnacle should measure ten times as much as the image, or even twenty times as much; it should be circular, single, and crown-shaped. (66)

sabhayāpi samētaṁ vā pr̥thaksabhamathāpi vā। dvisabhaṁ trisabhaṁ vāpi sagōpuramathāpi vā ॥67॥

प्राकारवृत्तयुक्तं वा सप्तप्राकारमेव वा। सद्मवृत्तं किष्कुमात्रं बहिर्वा चतुरस्रकम् ॥६८॥
prākāravr̥ttayuktaṁ vā saptaprākāramēva vā। sadmavr̥ttaṁ kiṣkumātraṁ bahirvā caturasrakam ॥68॥

The temple may also have a hall, a separate hall, two or three halls, or a gateway tower. It may be surrounded by an enclosure wall or by exactly seven enclosure walls, or it may have a square outer enclosure extending one kiṣku around the building. (67–68)

ततः परं किष्कुमात्रं सभाया अन्तरं यदि। ततस्तावत् तृतीयायाः सार्धमेव ह्युदाहृतम् ॥६९॥

If, farther out, the distance from the hall is one kiṣku, the third enclosure is prescribed beyond it at exactly one and a half times that distance. (69)

किष्कुत्रयं च शक्राद्यैः स्थानं तद्वृत्ततः स्मृतम्। ततस्तु मण्टपं कुर्यात् प्रतिष्ठायाः सुलक्षणम् ॥७०॥
kiṣkutrayaṁ ca śakrādyaiḥ sthānaṁ tadvr̥ttataḥ smr̥tam। tatastu maṇṭapaṁ kuryāt pratiṣṭhāyāḥ sulakṣaṇam ॥70॥
[किष्कु + त्रयम् (kiṣku + trayam) - three kiṣkus; च (ca) - and; शक्र + आद्यैः (śakra + ādyaiḥ) - by Śakra and the others; स्थानम् (sthānam) - space; तद् + वृत्ततः (tad + vr̥ttataḥ) - from its circumference; स्मृतम् (smr̥tam) - is prescribed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - in turn; मण्टपम् (maṇṭapam) - pavilion; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - one should construct; प्रतिष्ठायाः (pratiṣṭhāyāḥ) - for the consecration; सुलक्षणम् (sulakṣaṇam) - well-proportioned;]
A space of three kiṣkus from its circumference is prescribed by Śakra and the others. One should then construct a well-proportioned pavilion for the consecration. (70)

पूजयेद्वास्तुपुरुषस्योपरिस्थांस्तु सर्वदा। देवान् ब्रह्मादिकान् वास्तुर्वराहस्य हरेः सुतः ॥७१॥
pūjayēdvāstupuruṣasyōparisthāṁstu sarvadā। dēvān brahmādikān vāsturvarāhasya harēḥ sutaḥ ॥71॥
[पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should worship; वास्तुपुरुषस्य (vāstupuruṣasya) - of the Vāstupuruṣa; उपरिस्थान् (uparisthān) - situated above; तु (tu) - however; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; देवान् (dēvān) - the deities; ब्रह्मादिकान् (brahmādikān) - beginning with Brahmā; वास्तुः (vāstuḥ) - Vāstu; वराहस्य (varāhasya) - of Varāha; हरेः (harēḥ) - of Hari; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;]
One should always worship the deities beginning with Brahmā who are positioned above the Vāstupuruṣa. Vāstu is the son of Hari in his form as Varāha. (71)

पातितो दैवतैर्भूमौ चतुरस्राकृतिः स्थितः। कृत्वाष्टकाष्टकोष्ठानि मध्ये ब्रह्मा चतुष्टये ॥७२॥

[पातितः (pātitaḥ) - cast down; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the deities; भूमौ (bhūmau) - upon the ground; चतुरस्राकृतिः (caturasrākr̥tiḥ) - having a square form; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - lies; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having made; अष्टक + अष्ट + कोष्ठानि (aṣṭaka + aṣṭa + kōṣṭhāni) - eight-by-eight compartments; मध्ये (madhyē) - in the center; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; च (ca) - and; चतुष्टये (catuṣṭayē) - in the group of four compartments;]
पूज्यो द्वये द्वये शक्रो यमो वरुण एव च। सोमश्च पूज्याः कोणेषु वह्न्याद्याः कोणदेवताः ॥७३॥
pūjyō dvayē dvayē śakrō yamō varuṇa ēva ca। sōmaśca pūjyāḥ kōṇēṣu vahnyādyāḥ kōṇadēvatāḥ ॥73॥
[पूज्यः (pūjyaḥ) - is to be worshipped; द्वये द्वये (dvayē dvayē) - in two cells apiece; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; एव (ēva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; सोमः (sōmaḥ) - Soma; च (ca) - and; पूज्याः (pūjyāḥ) - are to be worshipped; कोणेषु (kōṇēṣu) - in the corners; वह्नि-आद्याः (vahni-ādyāḥ) - beginning with Agni; कोण-देवताः (kōṇa-dēvatāḥ) - corner deities;]
Cast down upon the ground by the deities, Vāstu lies in a square form. The ground plan should be divided into an eight-by-eight grid, with Brahmā worshipped in the central four cells; Śakra, Yama, Varuṇa, and Soma in two cells each; and the corner deities beginning with Agni in the corners. (72–73)

पुनस्त्रये त्रये कामं धातारं सविधातृकम्। स्कन्दं च पूजयेत् कोणे सूर्यं चैव विनायकम् ॥७४॥
punastrayē trayē kāmaṁ dhātāraṁ savidhātr̥kam। skandaṁ ca pūjayēt kōṇē sūryaṁ caiva vināyakam ॥74॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; त्रये त्रये (trayē trayē) - in each triad; कामम् (kāmam) - Kāma; धातारम् (dhātāram) - Dhātṛ; स-विधातृकम् (sa-vidhātr̥kam) - accompanied by Vidhātṛ; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - Skanda; च (ca) - and; पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should worship; कोणे (kōṇē) - in the corner; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - Sūrya; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; विनायकम् (vināyakam) - Vināyaka;]
In each set of three cells, one should worship Kāma, Dhātṛ together with Vidhātṛ, and Skanda; Sūrya and Vināyaka should also be worshipped in a corner. (74)

कालं कुबेरं च बहिः प्रत्येकं दिक्षु पूजयेत्। हारिं हरिं गभीरं च गाहनं गहनं गुहम् ॥७५॥
kālaṁ kubēraṁ ca bahiḥ pratyēkaṁ dikṣu pūjayēt। hāriṁ hariṁ gabhīraṁ ca gāhanaṁ gahanaṁ guham ॥75॥
[कालम् (kālam) - Kāla; कुबेरम् (kubēram) - Kubera; च (ca) - and; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside; प्रत्येकम् (pratyēkam) - each separately; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should worship; हारिम् (hārim) - Hāri; हरिम् (harim) - Hari; गभीरम् (gabhīram) - Gabhīra; च (ca) - and; गाहनम् (gāhanam) - Gāhana; गहनम् (gahanam) - Gahana; गुहम् (guham) - Guha;]
Outside, in the various directions, one should separately worship Kāla, Kubera, Hāri, Hari, Gabhīra, Gāhana, Gahana, and Guha. (75)

भानुमङ्गारकं चैव पूर्वस्यां दिशि पूजयेत्। दारुणं विदरिं द्योतं प्रद्योतं द्योतनं हरिम् ॥७६॥
bhānumaṅgārakaṁ caiva pūrvasyāṁ diśi pūjayēt। dāruṇaṁ vidariṁ dyōtaṁ pradyōtaṁ dyōtanaṁ harim ॥76॥
[भानुम् (bhānum) - Bhānu; अङ्गारकम् (aṅgārakam) - Aṅgāraka; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; पूर्वस्याम् (pūrvasyām) - eastern; दिशि (diśi) - in the direction; पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should worship; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - Dāruṇa; विदरिम् (vidarim) - Vidari; द्योतम् (dyōtam) - Dyota; प्रद्योतम् (pradyōtam) - Pradyota; द्योतनम् (dyōtanam) - Dyotana; हरिम् (harim) - Hari;]
In the east, one should worship Bhānu and Aṅgāraka, as well as Hari under the names Dāruṇa, Vidari, Dyota, Pradyota, and Dyotana. (76)

मृत्युं शनैश्चरं चैव दक्षिणस्यां प्रपूजयेत्। पुष्करं क्षरणं क्षारिं विक्षणं क्षोभणं क्षणम् ॥७७॥
mr̥tyuṁ śanaiścaraṁ caiva dakṣiṇasyāṁ prapūjayēt। puṣkaraṁ kṣaraṇaṁ kṣāriṁ vikṣaṇaṁ kṣōbhaṇaṁ kṣaṇam ॥77॥
[मृत्युम् (mr̥tyum) - Mṛtyu; शनैश्चरम् (śanaiścaram) - Śanaiścara; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; दक्षिणस्याम् (dakṣiṇasyām) - in the southern direction; प्रपूजयेत् (prapūjayēt) - one should duly worship; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara; क्षरणम् (kṣaraṇam) - Kṣaraṇa; क्षारिम् (kṣārim) - Kṣārin; विक्षणम् (vikṣaṇam) - Vikṣaṇa; क्षोभणम् (kṣōbhaṇam) - Kṣobhaṇa; क्षणम् (kṣaṇam) - Kṣaṇa;]
In the south, one should duly worship Mṛtyu, Śanaiścara, Puṣkara, Kṣaraṇa, Kṣārin, Vikṣaṇa, Kṣobhaṇa, and Kṣaṇa. (77)

चार्वङ्गं भार्गवं चैव पश्चिमायां प्रपूजयेत्। चारं विचारं प्रचरं सञ्चारं चरणं चरम् ॥७८॥
cārvaṅgaṁ bhārgavaṁ caiva paścimāyāṁ prapūjayēt। cāraṁ vicāraṁ pracaraṁ sañcāraṁ caraṇaṁ caram ॥78॥
[चार्वङ्गम् (cārvaṅgam) - Cārvaṅga; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) - Bhārgava; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; पश्चिमायाम् (paścimāyām) - in the west; प्रपूजयेत् (prapūjayēt) - one should duly worship; चारम् (cāram) - Cāra; विचारम् (vicāram) - Vicāra; प्रचरम् (pracaram) - Pracāra; सञ्चारम् (sañcāram) - Sañcāra; चरणम् (caraṇam) - Caraṇa; चरम् (caram) - Cara;]
In the west, one should duly worship Cārvaṅga, Bhārgava, Cāra, Vicāra, Pracāra, Sañcāra, Caraṇa, and Cara. (78)

बृहस्पतिं बुधं चैवाप्युत्तरस्यां प्रपूजयेत्। एवमेव विमानस्य कृतेः प्रागपि पूजयेत् ॥७९॥
br̥haspatiṁ budhaṁ caivāpyuttarasyāṁ prapūjayēt। ēvamēva vimānasya kr̥tēḥ prāgapi pūjayēt ॥79॥
[बृहस्पतिं (br̥haspatiṁ) - Bṛhaspati; बुधं (budhaṁ) - Budha; च + एव + अपि (ca + ēva + api) - and also indeed; उत्तरस्यां (uttarasyāṁ) - in the north; प्रपूजयेत् (prapūjayēt) - one should duly worship; एवम् + एव (ēvam + ēva) - in precisely the same way; विमानस्य (vimānasya) - of the shrine; कृतेः (kr̥tēḥ) - construction; प्राक् + अपि (prāk + api) - also before; पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should worship;]
In the north, one should duly worship Bṛhaspati and Budha. Worship should likewise be performed before construction of the shrine begins. (79)

सप्तपर्णमयं साधु कारयेन्मण्डपं ततः। सप्तहस्तं द्विषड्ढस्तमथवा द्विगुणं ततः ॥८०॥
saptaparṇamayaṁ sādhu kārayēnmaṇḍapaṁ tataḥ। saptahastaṁ dviṣaḍḍhastamathavā dviguṇaṁ tataḥ ॥80॥
[सप्तपर्ण-मयम् (saptaparṇa-mayam) - made of saptaparṇa wood; साधु (sādhu) - properly; कारयेत् (kārayēt) - should have constructed; मण्डपम् (maṇḍapam) - pavilion; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सप्त-हस्तम् (sapta-hastam) - seven cubits; द्विषट् + हस्तम् (dviṣaṭ + hastam) - twelve cubits; अथवा (athavā) - or; द्विगुणम् (dviguṇam) - twice as large; ततः (tataḥ) - as that;]
चतुर्गुणं वा सम्यक् तु चतुरस्रं सहाजिरम्। अन्यच्च मण्टपं दीर्घं पञ्चहस्तं तु कारयेत् ॥८१॥
caturguṇaṁ vā samyak tu caturasraṁ sahājiram। anyacca maṇṭapaṁ dīrghaṁ pañcahastaṁ tu kārayēt ॥81॥
[चतुर्गुणं (caturguṇaṁ) - fourfold; वा (vā) - or; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; तु (tu) - however; चतुरस्रं (caturasraṁ) - square; सह + अजिरम् (saha + ajiram) - with a courtyard; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; च (ca) - also; मण्टपं (maṇṭapaṁ) - pavilion; दीर्घं (dīrghaṁ) - long; पञ्चहस्तं (pañcahastaṁ) - five cubits in length; तु (tu) - indeed; कारयेत् (kārayēt) - one should have constructed;]
One should then have a pavilion of saptaparṇa wood properly constructed, measuring seven by twelve cubits, or twice or four times that size. It should be square and include a courtyard. One should also have another pavilion constructed, five cubits long. (80–81)

त्रिचतुष्कोष्ठकं तत्र मध्ये प्रागायतं शुभम्। कारयेन्मण्डलं साधु हस्तमात्रं तु विस्तृतम् ॥८२॥
tricatuṣkōṣṭhakaṁ tatra madhyē prāgāyataṁ śubham। kārayēnmaṇḍalaṁ sādhu hastamātraṁ tu vistr̥tam ॥82॥
[त्रि + चतुः + कोष्ठकम् (tri + catuḥ + kōṣṭhakam) - having a three-by-four arrangement of compartments; तत्र (tatra) - there; मध्ये (madhyē) - in the middle; प्राक् + आयतम् (prāk + āyatam) - elongated eastward; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; कारयेत् (kārayēt) - one should have made; मण्डलम् (maṇḍalam) - a maṇḍala; साधु (sādhu) - properly; हस्तमात्रम् (hastamātram) - measuring one hasta; तु (tu) - but; विस्तृतम् (vistr̥tam) - in breadth;]
In its center, one should have an auspicious maṇḍala properly made, extending eastward, arranged in a three-by-four grid, and measuring only one hasta in width. (82)

तत्र द्वादशपात्राणि स्थापयेत् पालिकादिकम्। पालिकास्तु चतुर्विंशत्यङ्गुलोच्छ्रयसंयुताः ॥८३॥
tatra dvādaśapātrāṇi sthāpayēt pālikādikam। pālikāstu caturviṁśatyaṅgulōcchrayasaṁyutāḥ ॥83॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; पात्राणि (pātrāṇi) - vessels; स्थापयेत् (sthāpayēt) - one should place; पालिका + आदिकम् (pālikā + ādikam) - beginning with pālikās; पालिकाः (pālikāḥ) - the pālikās; तु (tu) - as for; चतुर्विंशति + अङ्गुल (caturviṁśati + aṅgula) - twenty-four aṅgulas; उच्छ्रय (ucchraya) - height; संयुताः (saṁyutāḥ) - possessing;]
There one should place twelve vessels, beginning with pālikās. Each pālikā should be twenty-four aṅgulas high. (83)

अष्टादशाङ्गुलाश्चैव तथा पञ्चमुखा इति। द्वादशाङ्गुलकाश्चैव शरावाः पश्चिमानुगाः ॥८४॥
aṣṭādaśāṅgulāścaiva tathā pañcamukhā iti। dvādaśāṅgulakāścaiva śarāvāḥ paścimānugāḥ ॥84॥
[अष्टादश-अङ्गुलाः (aṣṭādaśa-aṅgulāḥ) - eighteen aṅgulas in dimension; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and precisely; तथा (tathā) - also; पञ्च-मुखाः (pañca-mukhāḥ) - five-mouthed; इति (iti) - thus; द्वादश-अङ्गुलकाः (dvādaśa-aṅgulakāḥ) - twelve aṅgulas in dimension; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and precisely; शरावाः (śarāvāḥ) - the shallow bowls; पश्चिम-अनुगाः (paścima-anugāḥ) - aligned westward;]
The pālikās should also measure exactly eighteen aṅgulas and have five openings. The shallow bowls should measure exactly twelve aṅgulas and be aligned toward the west. (84)

तत्र विष्णुं चतुर्मूर्तिं पूजयेद्भक्तितस्त्रिशः। सप्तधान्यानि तेष्वेव पूरयेदङ्कुरार्थतः ॥८५॥
tatra viṣṇuṁ caturmūrtiṁ pūjayēdbhaktitastriśaḥ। saptadhānyāni tēṣvēva pūrayēdaṅkurārthataḥ ॥85॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; चतुर्मूर्तिम् (caturmūrtim) - in four forms; पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should worship; भक्तितः (bhaktitaḥ) - with devotion; त्रिशः (triśaḥ) - three times; सप्तधान्यानि (saptadhānyāni) - seven kinds of grain; तेषु + एव (tēṣu + ēva) - in those very vessels; पूरयेत् (pūrayēt) - one should place; अङ्कुरार्थतः (aṅkurārthataḥ) - for the purpose of sprouting;]
There one should devoutly worship Viṣṇu in his four forms three times and fill those same vessels with seven kinds of grain for sprouting. (85)

तत्र नित्यं बलिं दद्याद्विष्णवे दशरात्रकम्। ब्रह्मशङ्करगीर्वाणपितृगन्धर्वयक्षकैः ॥८६॥
tatra nityaṁ baliṁ dadyādviṣṇavē daśarātrakam। brahmaśaṅkaragīrvāṇapitr̥gandharvayakṣakaiḥ ॥86॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; नित्यम् (nityam) - daily; बलिम् (balim) - ritual offering; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - one should offer; विष्णवे (viṣṇavē) - to Viṣṇu; दशरात्रकम् (daśarātrakam) - for ten nights; ब्रह्म (brahma) - with Brahmā; शङ्कर (śaṅkara) - with Śaṅkara; गीर्वाण (gīrvāṇa) - with the gods; पितृ (pitr̥) - with the ancestors; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - with the Gandharvas; यक्षकैः (yakṣakaiḥ) - with the Yakṣas;]
भूतैश्च पायसेनैव तथा पद्माक्षतेन च। अन्नापूपेन पुष्पान्नैरन्नलाजाक्षतैरपि। सक्तुभिश्च क्रमेणैव देवान्तं पायसेन वा ॥८७॥
bhūtaiśca pāyasēnaiva tathā padmākṣatēna ca। annāpūpēna puṣpānnairannalājākṣatairapi। saktubhiśca kramēṇaiva dēvāntaṁ pāyasēna vā ॥87॥
[भूतैः + च (bhūtaiḥ + ca) - and with the bhūtas; पायसेन + एव (pāyasēna + ēva) - with rice pudding alone; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पद्म + अक्षतेन (padma + akṣatēna) - with lotus and unbroken rice; च (ca) - and; अन्न + अपूपेन (anna + apūpēna) - with a rice cake; पुष्प + अन्नैः (puṣpa + annaiḥ) - with flower-rice offerings; अन्न + लाज + अक्षतैः (anna + lāja + akṣataiḥ) - with cooked rice, parched grain, and unbroken rice; अपि (api) - also; सक्तुभिः + च (saktubhiḥ + ca) - and with roasted flour; क्रमेण + एव (kramēṇa + ēva) - strictly in sequence; देव + अन्तम् (dēva + antam) - ending with the deity; पायसेन (pāyasēna) - with rice pudding; वा (vā) - or;]
For ten nights, one should make a daily ritual offering there to Viṣṇu, together with Brahmā, Śaṅkara, the gods, the ancestors, the Gandharvas, the Yakṣas, and the bhūtas. The offerings should consist of rice pudding alone, then lotus and unbroken rice, a rice cake, flower-rice offerings, cooked rice, parched grain and unbroken rice, and roasted flour, in precisely that sequence, ending with the deity; alternatively, rice pudding may be offered. (86–87)

तदैव प्रतिमायाश्च कारयेदधिवासनम्। पञ्चगव्ये सप्तरात्रं क्षिप्त्वा पुरुषसूक्ततः ॥८८॥
tadaiva pratimāyāśca kārayēdadhivāsanam। pañcagavyē saptarātraṁ kṣiptvā puruṣasūktataḥ ॥88॥

At the same time, one should have the preliminary consecration of the image performed by placing it in pañcagavya for seven nights with the Puruṣasūkta. (88)

[वेदान् + च (vēdān + ca) - and the Vedas; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - all four; सम्यक् (samyak) - duly; पारयेयुः (pārayēyuḥ) - should recite in full; द्विज + उत्तमाः (dvija + uttamāḥ) - the foremost twice-born men; प्राच्य + आदि + द्वारगौ (prācya + ādi + dvāragau) - stationed at the gates beginning with the eastern; द्वौ द्वौ (dvau dvau) - two at each; एकैकम् (ēkaikam) - one at each; तु (tu) - but; दश + अवराः (daśa + avarāḥ) - numbering no fewer than ten; यथा + लब्धम् (yathā + labdham) - according to availability; यथा + वित्तम् (yathā + vittam) - as financial means permit; अथवा (athavā) - or else; विष्णु + तत्पराः (viṣṇu + tatparāḥ) - wholly devoted to Viṣṇu;]
The foremost twice-born men should duly recite all four Vedas. Two should be stationed at each gate, beginning with the eastern gate, with one Veda assigned to each gate. They should number at least ten; alternatively, as many may be engaged as are available and financial means permit. All should be wholly devoted to Viṣṇu. (89)

त्रयोदशात्र कुण्डानि परितः कारयेद् बुधः। उक्तलक्षणयुक्तानि प्रधानं त्वग्निकोणके। साक्षात्तु कोणगाद्धस्तमात्रमन्तरतः सुधीः ॥९०॥
trayōdaśātra kuṇḍāni paritaḥ kārayēd budhaḥ। uktalakṣaṇayuktāni pradhānaṁ tvagnikōṇakē। sākṣāttu kōṇagāddhastamātramantarataḥ sudhīḥ ॥90॥
[त्रयोदश (trayōdaśa) - thirteen; अत्र (atra) - here; कुण्डानि (kuṇḍāni) - fire-pits; परितः (paritaḥ) - all around; कारयेत् (kārayēt) - should have constructed; बुधः (budhaḥ) - the wise person; उक्त + लक्षण + युक्तानि (ukta + lakṣaṇa + yuktāni) - possessing the prescribed characteristics; प्रधानम् (pradhānam) - the principal one; तु (tu) - however; अग्नि + कोणके (agni + kōṇakē) - in the southeastern corner; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - from the exact point; तु (tu) - but; कोणगात् (kōṇagāt) - situated at the corner; हस्त + मात्रम् (hasta + mātram) - one hasta; अन्तरतः (antarataḥ) - at a distance; सुधीः (sudhīḥ) - the discerning person;]
A knowledgeable practitioner should have thirteen fire pits constructed around the site, each conforming to the prescribed specifications. The principal pit should be in the southeastern corner, one hasta from the exact point of the corner. (90)

आज्याहुतिं तेषु कुर्यात् प्रत्येकं लक्षसङ्ख्यया। प्रत्येकमयुतं वापि प्रधाने लक्षसङ्ख्यकम् ॥९१॥
ājyāhutiṁ tēṣu kuryāt pratyēkaṁ lakṣasaṅkhyayā। pratyēkamayutaṁ vāpi pradhānē lakṣasaṅkhyakam ॥91॥
[आज्य + आहुतिम् (ājya + āhutim) - ghee offerings; तेषु (tēṣu) - in those pits; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - he should make; प्रत्येकम् (pratyēkam) - in each; लक्ष + सङ्ख्यया (lakṣa + saṅkhyayā) - to the number of one hundred thousand; प्रत्येकम् (pratyēkam) - in each; अयुतम् (ayutam) - ten thousand; वा + अपि (vā + api) - or alternatively; प्रधाने (pradhānē) - in the principal pit; लक्ष + सङ्ख्यकम् (lakṣa + saṅkhyakam) - numbering one hundred thousand;]
He should make one hundred thousand ghee offerings in each pit. Alternatively, he may make ten thousand in each and one hundred thousand in the principal pit. (91)

अर्धं तदर्धमथवा मूलमन्त्रेण मन्त्रवित्। पञ्चविंशतितत्वार्थे प्रधाने जुहुयात् पुरः ॥९२॥
ardhaṁ tadardhamathavā mūlamantrēṇa mantravit। pañcaviṁśatitatvārthē pradhānē juhuyāt puraḥ ॥92॥
[अर्धं (ardhaṁ) - half the prescribed number; तत् + अर्धम् (tat + ardham) - half of that amount; अथवा (athavā) - or alternatively; मूल + मन्त्रेण (mūla + mantrēṇa) - with the root mantra; मन्त्रवित् (mantravit) - the knower of the mantra; पञ्चविंशति + तत्व + अर्थे (pañcaviṁśati + tatva + arthē) - for the twenty-five principles; प्रधाने (pradhānē) - in the principal fire; जुहुयात् (juhuyāt) - should offer; पुरः (puraḥ) - first;]
Alternatively, the knower of the mantra should first make half the prescribed number of offerings, or half that amount again, in the principal fire with the root mantra, for the twenty-five principles. (92)

Alternatively, he may make either one thousand or only one hundred offerings for each, as well as one hundred with the Puruṣasūkta and one thousand with the Gāyatrī. Beforehand, he should perform the water-immersion rite, or else immersion in pañcagavya. (93)

शोभोपशोभिकाश्चैव चक्राब्जस्य तु लक्षणम्। चतुरस्रं विना चक्रं विशेषो भद्रके स्मृतः ॥९५॥
śōbhōpaśōbhikāścaiva cakrābjasya tu lakṣaṇam। caturasraṁ vinā cakraṁ viśēṣō bhadrakē smr̥taḥ ॥95॥

The auspicious maṇḍala in the pavilion may be either a Cakrābja or a Bhadraka. The Cakrābja is defined by a lotus, three circles, a wheel, the zodiacal signs, a pathway, and ornamental and subsidiary ornamental sections. The distinctive feature of the Bhadraka is a wheel without a square enclosure. (94–95)

सहस्रमर्धं पादं वा कलशांस्तत्र पूजयेत्। शतं तदर्धं पादं वा वित्ताभावे निगद्यते ॥९६॥
sahasramardhaṁ pādaṁ vā kalaśāṁstatra pūjayēt। śataṁ tadardhaṁ pādaṁ vā vittābhāvē nigadyatē ॥96॥
[सहस्रम् (sahasram) - one thousand; अर्धम् (ardham) - half of that number; पादम् (pādam) - a quarter of that number; वा (vā) - or; कलशान् (kalaśān) - ritual vessels; तत्र (tatra) - there; पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should worship; शतम् (śatam) - one hundred; तत् + अर्धम् (tat + ardham) - half of that; पादम् (pādam) - a quarter of that; वा (vā) - or; वित्त + अभावे (vitta + abhāvē) - in the absence of sufficient funds; निगद्यते (nigadyatē) - is prescribed;]
One should worship a thousand ritual vessels there, or half or a quarter of that number. If funds are insufficient, one hundred, fifty, or twenty-five vessels are prescribed. (96)

क्वाथेन क्षीरवृक्षाणां तथा पञ्चामृतैरपि। पञ्चगव्येन शुद्धेन जलेन च पृथक् पृथक् ॥९७॥
kvāthēna kṣīravr̥kṣāṇāṁ tathā pañcāmr̥tairapi। pañcagavyēna śuddhēna jalēna ca pr̥thak pr̥thak ॥97॥
[क्वाथेन (kvāthēna) - with a decoction; क्षीर-वृक्षाणाम् (kṣīra-vr̥kṣāṇām) - of latex-bearing trees; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पञ्च-अमृतैः (pañca-amr̥taiḥ) - with the five nectars; अपि (api) - also; पञ्च-गव्येन (pañca-gavyēna) - with pañcagavya; शुद्धेन (śuddhēna) - purified; जलेन (jalēna) - with water; च (ca) - and; पृथक् पृथक् (pr̥thak pr̥thak) - each separately;]
The liquids are a decoction of latex-bearing trees, the five nectars, purified pañcagavya, and water, each kept separate. (97)

पूरयेत् कलशान् मध्यं शुद्धोदेनैव पूरयेत्। ब्राह्मस्यैव चतुर्दिक्षु गन्धोदानां चतुष्टयम् ॥९८॥
pūrayēt kalaśān madhyaṁ śuddhōdēnaiva pūrayēt। brāhmasyaiva caturdikṣu gandhōdānāṁ catuṣṭayam ॥98॥
[पूरयेत् (pūrayēt) - one should fill; कलशान् (kalaśān) - the pots; मध्यम् (madhyam) - the central pot; शुद्ध + उदेन (śuddha + udēna) - with pure water; एव (ēva) - alone; पूरयेत् (pūrayēt) - one should fill; ब्राह्मस्य (brāhmasya) - of the Brahma pot; एव (ēva) - itself; चतुर् + दिक्षु (catur + dikṣu) - in the four directions; गन्ध + उदानाम् (gandha + udānām) - for scented waters; चतुष्टयम् (catuṣṭayam) - a set of four pots;]
One should fill the vessels with these liquids, using only pure water for the central vessel. Four vessels of scented water should be placed in the cardinal directions around the Brahmā vessel. (98)

चतुर्दले सिते पद्मचतुष्के मण्डले स्थिते। पूर्वादिक्रमयोगेन रसक्वाथशुभोदकान् ॥९९॥
caturdalē sitē padmacatuṣkē maṇḍalē sthitē। pūrvādikramayōgēna rasakvāthaśubhōdakān ॥99॥
[चतुर्दले (caturdalē) - four-petaled; सिते (sitē) - white; पद्म-चतुष्के (padma-catuṣkē) - in the group of four lotuses; मण्डले (maṇḍalē) - in the maṇḍala; स्थिते (sthitē) - situated; पूर्व-आदि-क्रम-योगेन (pūrva-ādi-krama-yōgēna) - according to the sequence beginning with the east; रस (rasa) - juices; क्वाथ (kvātha) - decoctions; शुभ-उदकान् (śubha-udakān) - auspicious waters;]
Within the maṇḍala, the juices, decoctions, and auspicious waters should be arranged, in order beginning with the east, on the group of four white, four-petaled lotuses. (99)

गन्धांश्च स्थापयेत् पञ्चगव्यं शुद्धान्तरे न्यसेत्। पृथक् चतुर्दलं पद्मं रक्तं कृत्वाल्पकं सुधीः ॥१००॥
gandhāṁśca sthāpayēt pañcagavyaṁ śuddhāntarē nyasēt। pr̥thak caturdalaṁ padmaṁ raktaṁ kr̥tvālpakaṁ sudhīḥ ॥100॥
[गन्धान् + च (gandhān + ca) - and fragrant substances; स्थापयेत् (sthāpayēt) - should place; पञ्चगव्यम् (pañcagavyam) - the five products of the cow; शुद्ध-अन्तरे (śuddha-antarē) - in the clean interior; न्यसेत् (nyasēt) - should set down; पृथक् (pr̥thak) - separately; चतुर्-दलम् (catur-dalam) - four-petaled; पद्मम् (padmam) - lotus; रक्तम् (raktam) - red; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having made; अल्पकम् (alpakam) - small; सुधीः (sudhīḥ) - the wise one;]
He should also place the fragrant substances there and set the pañcagavya in the clean interior. The wise practitioner should separately make a small red lotus with four petals. (100)

पञ्चाशत्वे तु गन्धोदं सर्वमध्ये निधापयेत्। ब्राह्मस्य पुरतस्त्वेकं शार्वं संस्थापयेद् बृहत् ॥१०१॥
pañcāśatvē tu gandhōdaṁ sarvamadhyē nidhāpayēt। brāhmasya puratastvēkaṁ śārvaṁ saṁsthāpayēd br̥hat ॥101॥
[पञ्चाशत्वे (pañcāśatvē) - when the number is fifty; तु (tu) - however; गन्धोदम् (gandhōdam) - the fragrant-water vessel; सर्वमध्ये (sarvamadhyē) - at the center of all; निधापयेत् (nidhāpayēt) - he should place; ब्राह्मस्य (brāhmasya) - of Brahmā's vessel; पुरतः (purataḥ) - in front; तु (tu) - and; एकम् (ēkam) - one; शार्वम् (śārvam) - vessel of Śarva; संस्थापयेत् (saṁsthāpayēt) - he should set in place; बृहत् (br̥hat) - large;]
If there are fifty vessels, he should place the fragrant-water vessel at the center of the entire arrangement. In front of Brahmā’s vessel, he should place one large vessel of Śarva. (101)

अष्टदिक्ष्वष्टपद्मेषु पञ्चकं पञ्चकं न्यसेत्। अनेन क्रमयोगेन कलशा अखिला अपि ॥१०२॥
aṣṭadikṣvaṣṭapadmēṣu pañcakaṁ pañcakaṁ nyasēt। anēna kramayōgēna kalaśā akhilā api ॥102॥
[अष्ट + दिक्षु (aṣṭa + dikṣu) - in the eight directions; अष्ट + पद्मेषु (aṣṭa + padmēṣu) - on the eight lotuses; पञ्चकम् पञ्चकम् (pañcakam pañcakam) - five on each; न्यसेत् (nyasēt) - one should place; अनेन (anēna) - by this; क्रम + योगेन (krama + yōgēna) - ordered arrangement; कलशाः (kalaśāḥ) - jars; अखिलाः (akhilāḥ) - all; अपि (api) - also;]
तत्तद्द्रव्यमयास्तत्र तत्र स्थाप्यास्तु बाह्यतः। तदैवाङ्कुरपात्राणि परितस्तत्र विन्यसेत् ॥१०३॥
tattaddravyamayāstatra tatra sthāpyāstu bāhyataḥ। tadaivāṅkurapātrāṇi paritastatra vinyasēt ॥103॥
[तत्-तत्-द्रव्य-मयाः (tat-tat-dravya-mayāḥ) - containing each respective substance; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - at each corresponding location; स्थाप्याः (sthāpyāḥ) - are to be placed; तु (tu) - but; बाह्यतः (bāhyataḥ) - on the outside; तदा एव (tadā ēva) - at that very time; अङ्कुर-पात्राणि (aṅkura-pātrāṇi) - vessels for sprouts; परितः (paritaḥ) - all around; तत्र (tatra) - there; विन्यसेत् (vinyasēt) - one should arrange;]
On each of the eight lotuses in the eight directions, one should place five vessels. Following this arrangement, all the vessels containing their respective substances should be placed outside, each in its corresponding position. At the same time, one should arrange the vessels for sprouts all around the site. (102–103)

कुशोदकं च कार्पूरं कौङ्कुमं चान्दनं तथा। तुहिनोदं हरिद्रोदमौशीरं कोष्ठसार्षपम् ॥१०४॥

[कुश + उदकम् (kuśa + udakam) - kuśa-infused water; च (ca) - and; कार्पूरम् (kārpūram) - camphor water; कौङ्कुमम् (kauṅkumam) - saffron water; चान्दनम् (cāndanam) - sandalwood water; तथा (tathā) - likewise; तुहिन + उदम् (tuhina + udam) - cold water; हरिद्रा + उदम् (haridrā + udam) - turmeric water; औशीरम् (auśīram) - vetiver water; कोष्ठ + सार्षपम् (kōṣṭha + sārṣapam) - costus-and-mustard water;]
नदीसङ्गमजं चैव ताडाकं कौप्यमेव वा। निर्झरोदमिति प्रोक्ता विशेषकलशास्त्विमे ॥ शुद्धोदद्वयमप्येतन्महातीर्थसमुद्भवम् ॥१०५॥
nadīsaṅgamajaṁ caiva tāḍākaṁ kaupyamēva vā। nirjharōdamiti prōktā viśēṣakalaśāstvimē ॥ śuddhōdadvayamapyētanmahātīrthasamudbhavam ॥105॥
[नदी + सङ्गम + जम् (nadī + saṅgama + jam) - arising from a river confluence; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; ताडाकम् (tāḍākam) - reservoir water; कौप्यम् (kaupyam) - well water; एव (ēva) - indeed; वा (vā) - or; निर्झर + उदम् (nirjhara + udam) - water from a spring; इति (iti) - as such; प्रोक्ताः (prōktāḥ) - are designated; विशेष + कलशाः (viśēṣa + kalaśāḥ) - special ritual pitchers; तु (tu) - however; इमे (imē) - these; शुद्ध + उद + द्वयम् (śuddha + uda + dvayam) - pair of pure-water pitchers; अपि (api) - also; एतत् (ētat) - this; महा + तीर्थ + समुद्भवम् (mahā + tīrtha + samudbhavam) - obtained from a great sacred bathing place;]
The special ritual pitchers are those containing kuśa-infused water, camphor water, saffron water, sandalwood water, cold water, turmeric water, vetiver water, costus-and-mustard water, river-confluence water, reservoir water, well water, and spring water. The two pure-water pitchers should also contain water from a major sacred bathing place. (104-105)

चतुर्विंशतिमूर्तीनां वर्णमूर्तीस्तथापरः। आवाहयेच्छतत्वे तु क्रमव्युत्क्रमतस्तु ताः ॥१०६॥
caturviṁśatimūrtīnāṁ varṇamūrtīstathāparaḥ। āvāhayēcchatatvē tu kramavyutkramatastu tāḥ ॥106॥
[चतुर्विंशति + मूर्तीनाम् (caturviṁśati + mūrtīnām) - of the twenty-four forms; वर्ण + मूर्तीः (varṇa + mūrtīḥ) - letter-forms; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another person; आवाहयेत् (āvāhayēt) - should invoke; शतत्वे (śatatvē) - in the case of one hundred; तु (tu) - however; क्रम + व्युत्क्रमतः (krama + vyutkramataḥ) - in direct and reverse order; तु (tu) - specifically; ताः (tāḥ) - those;]
For a set of one hundred, another person should likewise invoke the letter-forms associated with the twenty-four forms in both direct and reverse order. (106)

वर्णमूर्तीः पुनश्चैव द्विचतुर्वारमेव च। सहस्रकलशादित्वे जपेन्मन्त्रांश्च शक्तितः ॥१०७॥

One should again invoke the letter-forms, but only twice or four times. In rites involving a thousand kalaśas and the like, one should recite the mantras according to one’s capacity. (107)

मन्त्रैः पुरुषसूक्तान्तैः विश्वतश्चक्षुषा तथा। पुनश्चाष्टाक्षरेणैव प्रणवेन च भक्तितः ॥१०९॥
mantraiḥ puruṣasūktāntaiḥ viśvataścakṣuṣā tathā। punaścāṣṭākṣarēṇaiva praṇavēna ca bhaktitaḥ ॥109॥
[मन्त्रैः (mantraiḥ) - with the mantras; पुरुष-सूक्त-अन्तैः (puruṣa-sūkta-antaiḥ) - concluding with the Puruṣasūkta; विश्वतश्चक्षुषा (viśvataścakṣuṣā) - with the Viśvataścakṣus mantra; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पुनः + च (punaḥ + ca) - and again; अष्टाक्षरेण + एव (aṣṭākṣarēṇa + ēva) - with the eight-syllabled mantra alone; प्रणवेन (praṇavēna) - with the praṇava; च (ca) - and; भक्तितः (bhaktitaḥ) - with devotion;]
Then, with reverence and amid the fivefold sounds and Vedic chanting, one should bring in the image and devoutly perform its ritual bath using the praṇava, the mantras ending with the Puruṣasūkta, the Viśvataścakṣus mantra, and, once again, the eight-syllabled mantra alone and the praṇava. (108–109)

After bathing the image with scented waters and adorning it with fragrant substances, flowers, and the like, one should install it with the praṇava. (110)

जपेदष्टाक्षरं मन्त्रं तत्तन्मूर्तिमनुं तथा। अष्टोत्तरशतं मन्त्री ध्यायेत् तेजोमयीं पुनः ॥१११॥

[जपेत् (japēt) - should recite; अष्टाक्षरम् (aṣṭākṣaram) - eight-syllabled; मन्त्रम् (mantram) - mantra; तत्-तत्-मूर्ति-मनुम् (tat-tat-mūrti-manum) - the mantra specific to each respective form; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अष्ट-उत्तर-शतम् (aṣṭa-uttara-śatam) - one hundred and eight times; मन्त्री (mantrī) - the mantra practitioner; ध्यायेत् (dhyāyēt) - should meditate upon; तेजोमयीम् (tējōmayīm) - composed of radiance; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
प्रतिमां प्रतिमान्तस्थां तन्मध्ये परमं वपुः। चिदानन्दरसं पूर्णगुणसम्पूर्णमुत्तमम् ॥११२॥
pratimāṁ pratimāntasthāṁ tanmadhyē paramaṁ vapuḥ। cidānandarasaṁ pūrṇaguṇasampūrṇamuttamam ॥112॥
[प्रतिमाम् (pratimām) - the image; प्रतिमा-अन्त-स्थाम् (pratimā-anta-sthām) - situated within the image; तत्-मध्ये (tat-madhyē) - in its midst; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; चित्-आनन्द-रसम् (cit-ānanda-rasam) - whose essence is consciousness and bliss; पूर्ण-गुण-सम्पूर्णम् (pūrṇa-guṇa-sampūrṇam) - fully endowed with perfect attributes; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the highest;]
The mantra practitioner should recite the eight-syllabled mantra and the mantra specific to each form one hundred and eight times. He should then meditate again on the radiant image within the image and, at its center, on the supreme and highest form, whose essence is consciousness and bliss and which is fully endowed with perfect attributes. (111–112)

पञ्चविंशतितत्त्वानां देवतास्तदनन्तरम्। स्थापयेत् प्रतिमामध्ये परितः केशवस्य तु ॥११३॥

Afterward, one should install the deities of the twenty-five principles within the image, around Keśava. (113)

After reciting there the Ātvāhārṣa, Gharma, Vaiṣṇava, Viśvakarman, and Puruṣa hymns, as well as his own mantra and again the eight-syllabled mantra, the wise practitioner should recite the praṇava while meditating on Viṣṇu, who possesses the highest form. (114–115)

अष्टार्णेन निजेनापि तथा पुरुषसूक्ततः। आवाहनं च स्नपनं पञ्चगव्येन मध्यवत्। पूर्वाद्युत्तरपर्यन्तः कलशक्रम उच्यते ॥११७॥

Then he should bathe Janārdana with the pitchers, following the outer sequence and using the prescribed mantras. For the central pitcher, he should use the praṇava, his own eight-syllabled mantra, and the Puruṣasūkta. Invocation and bathing with pañcagavya are performed as with the central pitcher. The order of the pitchers begins in the east and ends in the north. (116–117)

जप्त्वा पुनश्च तन्मन्त्रान् पूजयेच्च विधानतः। द्वारलोकपतिभ्यश्च बलिं दत्वा यथाक्रमम् ॥११८॥
japtvā punaśca tanmantrān pūjayēcca vidhānataḥ। dvāralōkapatibhyaśca baliṁ datvā yathākramam ॥118॥
[जप्त्वा (japtvā) - having recited; पुनः + च (punaḥ + ca) - again and; तद्-मन्त्रान् (tad-mantrān) - those mantras; पूजयेत् + च (pūjayēt + ca) - one should also worship; विधानतः (vidhānataḥ) - according to the prescribed procedure; द्वार + लोक-पतिभ्यः + च (dvāra + lōka-patibhyaḥ + ca) - to the doors and the lords of the worlds; बलिम् (balim) - a ritual offering; दत्वा (datvā) - having offered; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - in due sequence;]
वस्त्ररत्नहिरण्याद्यैरलङ्कृत्य विभूतितः। गुरवे दक्षिणां दद्यात् कोटिं लक्षं सहस्रकम् ॥११९॥
vastraratnahiraṇyādyairalaṅkr̥tya vibhūtitaḥ। guravē dakṣiṇāṁ dadyāt kōṭiṁ lakṣaṁ sahasrakam ॥119॥
[वस्त्र + रत्न + हिरण्य + आद्यैः (vastra + ratna + hiraṇya + ādyaiḥ) - with garments, jewels, gold, and the like; अलङ्कृत्य (alaṅkr̥tya) - having adorned; विभूतितः (vibhūtitaḥ) - according to his means; गुरवे (guravē) - to the guru; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - ritual fee; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - he should give; कोटिम् (kōṭim) - a crore; लक्षम् (lakṣam) - a lakh; सहस्रकम् (sahasrakam) - a thousand;]
After again reciting those mantras, one should perform the worship as prescribed and make a ritual offering in due order to the doors and the lords of the worlds. One should then adorn the guru with garments, jewels, gold, and the like according to one’s means, and give him a ritual fee of one crore, one lakh, or one thousand. (118–119)

शतमर्धं तदर्धं वा निःस्वो भक्त्या क्षमापयेत्। तदर्धमृत्विजां चैव तदर्धं पारणाकृताम् ॥१२०॥
śatamardhaṁ tadardhaṁ vā niḥsvō bhaktyā kṣamāpayēt। tadardhamr̥tvijāṁ caiva tadardhaṁ pāraṇākr̥tām ॥120॥
[शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; अर्धम् (ardham) - half of that; तत् + अर्धम् (tat + ardham) - half of that amount; वा (vā) - or; निःस्वः (niḥsvaḥ) - one without means; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; क्षमापयेत् (kṣamāpayēt) - should ask forgiveness; तत् + अर्धम् (tat + ardham) - half of that amount; ऋत्विजाम् (r̥tvijām) - for the officiating priests; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; तत् + अर्धम् (tat + ardham) - half of that amount; पारणा + कृताम् (pāraṇā + kr̥tām) - for those performing the breaking of the fast;]
Alternatively, the fee may be one hundred, half that amount, or half again. A person without means should devoutly ask forgiveness. Half that amount should also be given to the officiating priests, and half to those who perform the breaking of the fast. (120)

आश्वभ्यः आश्वपाकेभ्यो दद्यादन्नं समस्तशः। पुरस्तात्परतश्चैव सप्तरात्रं निरन्तरम् ॥१२१॥
āśvabhyaḥ āśvapākēbhyō dadyādannaṁ samastaśaḥ। purastātparataścaiva saptarātraṁ nirantaram ॥121॥
[आ + श्वभ्यः (ā + śvabhyaḥ) - even to dogs; आ + श्वपाकेभ्यः (ā + śvapākēbhyaḥ) - even to dog-cookers; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - he should give; अन्नम् (annam) - food; समस्तशः (samastaśaḥ) - in its entirety; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - before; परतः (parataḥ) - afterward; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and indeed; सप्तरात्रम् (saptarātram) - for seven nights; निरन्तरम् (nirantaram) - without interruption;]
He should give all the food even to dogs and dog-cookers, doing so continuously for seven nights both before and afterward. (121)

सुवर्णरजतवस्त्ररत्नाद्यैरागताभ्यागतानपि। पूजयेच्छक्तितो भक्त्या प्रीयतां भगवानिति ॥१२२॥
suvarṇarajatavastraratnādyairāgatābhyāgatānapi। pūjayēcchaktitō bhaktyā prīyatāṁ bhagavāniti ॥122॥
[सुवर्ण + रजत + वस्त्र + रत्न + आद्यैः (suvarṇa + rajata + vastra + ratna + ādyaiḥ) - with gold, silver, garments, jewels, and the like; आगत + अभ्यागतान् (āgata + abhyāgatān) - visitors and guests; अपि (api) - also; पूजयेत् (pūjayēt) - one should honor; शक्तितः (śaktitaḥ) - according to one's ability; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; प्रीयताम् (prīyatām) - may be pleased; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; इति (iti) - with the thought that;]
Within one’s means, one should also devoutly honor visitors and guests with gold, silver, garments, jewels, and the like, thinking, “May the Lord be pleased.” (122)

गीतनृत्यैश्च वाद्यैश्च पुराणैरितिहासकैः। सूक्तैर्मङ्गलघोषैश्च वैदिकैर्दिनसप्तकम् ॥१२३॥
gītanr̥tyaiśca vādyaiśca purāṇairitihāsakaiḥ। sūktairmaṅgalaghōṣaiśca vaidikairdinasaptakam ॥123॥
[गीत-नृत्यैः (gīta-nr̥tyaiḥ) - with songs and dances; च (ca) - and; वाद्यैः (vādyaiḥ) - with musical instruments; च (ca) - and; पुराणैः (purāṇaiḥ) - with Purāṇas; इतिहासकैः (itihāsakaiḥ) - with Itihāsa narratives; सूक्तैः (sūktaiḥ) - with hymns; मङ्गल-घोषैः (maṅgala-ghōṣaiḥ) - with auspicious acclamations; च (ca) - and; वैदिकैः (vaidikaiḥ) - Vedic; दिन-सप्तकम् (dina-saptakam) - a period of seven days;]
नयेत् ततो महाराजविभूत्यावभृथं सुधीः। कारयेद् देवदेवस्य स्वाध्यायैर्गीतनृत्तकैः ॥१२४॥
nayēt tatō mahārājavibhūtyāvabhr̥thaṁ sudhīḥ। kārayēd dēvadēvasya svādhyāyairgītanr̥ttakaiḥ ॥124॥
[नयेत् (nayēt) - should lead; ततः (tataḥ) - then; महाराज-विभूत्या (mahārāja-vibhūtyā) - with the magnificence of a great king; अवभृथम् (avabhr̥tham) - to the concluding bath; सुधीः (sudhīḥ) - the wise man; कारयेत् (kārayēt) - should have performed; देवदेवस्य (dēvadēvasya) - of the God of gods; स्वाध्यायैः (svādhyāyaiḥ) - with Vedic recitations; गीत-नृत्तकैः (gīta-nr̥ttakaiḥ) - with songs and dances;]
The wise man should spend seven days with songs and dances, musical instruments, Purāṇas and Itihāsa narratives, Vedic hymns, and auspicious acclamations. Then, with the splendor of a great king, he should lead the God of gods to the concluding bath and have it performed with Vedic recitations, songs, and dances. (123–124)

[महानदी + सङ्गमे (mahānadī + saṅgamē) - at the confluence of a great river; तु (tu) - then; तीर्थे (tīrthē) - at a sacred bathing-place; च (ca) - and; अतिप्रशस्तके (atipraśastakē) - most excellent; स्नापयेत् (snāpayēt) - one should bathe him; पूर्ववत् (pūrvavat) - as before; मन्त्रैः (mantraiḥ) - with mantras; पुंसूक्त + अन्तैः (puṁsūkta + antaiḥ) - ending with the Puruṣa-sūkta; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering; हरिम् (harim) - Hari;]
Then, at the confluence of a great river and at a most excellent sacred bathing place, one should bathe him as before with mantras ending in the Puruṣa-sūkta, while remembering Hari. (125)

ततः पूर्ववदागत्य प्रवेश्य पुरुषोत्तमम्। पूजयित्वा विधानेन दत्वा दानानि शक्तितः ॥१२६॥
tataḥ pūrvavadāgatya pravēśya puruṣōttamam। pūjayitvā vidhānēna datvā dānāni śaktitaḥ ॥126॥

गुरुं च भक्त्या सम्पूज्य स्वीकुर्यादाशिषस्ततः। शतप्रस्थादनूनं तु नैवेद्यं पायसोत्तरम् ॥१२७॥
guruṁ ca bhaktyā sampūjya svīkuryādāśiṣastataḥ। śataprasthādanūnaṁ tu naivēdyaṁ pāyasōttaram ॥127॥
[गुरुम् (gurum) - the teacher; च (ca) - and; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having duly worshipped; स्वीकुर्यात् (svīkuryāt) - one should receive; आशिषः (āśiṣaḥ) - blessings; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शत-प्रस्थात् (śata-prasthāt) - than one hundred prasthas; अ-नूनम् (a-nūnam) - not less; तु (tu) - but; नैवेद्यम् (naivēdyam) - food offering; पायस-उत्तरम् (pāyasa-uttaram) - chiefly consisting of milk-rice pudding;]
Then one should return as before, bring Puruṣottama inside, worship him according to the prescribed procedure, give gifts according to one’s means, and devoutly honor the teacher before receiving his blessings. The food offering, however, should amount to no less than one hundred prasthas and consist chiefly of milk-rice pudding. (126–127)

दिनेष्वेतेषु दातव्यं सघृतं ससितादिकम्। पश्चादपि यथाशक्ति पूजा कार्या हरेः सदा ॥१२८॥
dinēṣvētēṣu dātavyaṁ saghr̥taṁ sasitādikam। paścādapi yathāśakti pūjā kāryā harēḥ sadā ॥128॥
[दिनेषु (dinēṣu) - on the days; एतेषु (ētēṣu) - these; दातव्यं (dātavyaṁ) - should be offered; स-घृतं (sa-ghr̥taṁ) - together with ghee; स-सिता-आदिकम् (sa-sitā-ādikam) - together with sugar and the like; पश्चात् + अपि (paścāt + api) - even afterward; यथा-शक्ति (yathā-śakti) - according to one's ability; पूजा (pūjā) - worship; कार्या (kāryā) - should be performed; हरेः (harēḥ) - of Hari; सदा (sadā) - always;]
On these days, the offering should be presented with ghee, sugar, and the like. Even afterward, Hari should always be worshipped according to one’s means. (128)

जीर्णालयोद्धृतौ चैव तत्त्वमन्त्रान् स्वकं तथा। प्रातिलोम्येन जप्त्वैव मूर्तौ सङ्कोचयेद्धरिम् ॥१२९॥

When dismantling a dilapidated temple, one should recite the mantras of the principles and one’s own mantra in reverse order, and then cause Hari to contract within the image. (129)

[एतेन (ētēna) - by this; एव (ēva) - very; विधानेन (vidhānēna) - procedure; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having constructed; देवालयम् (dēvālayam) - a temple; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स्नापयेत् (snāpayēt) - one should bathe; पुण्डरीकाक्षम् (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - the Lotus-eyed Lord; द्विगुणेन (dviguṇēna) - with twice the resources; प्रवाहणात् (pravāhaṇāt) - as for the conveyance;]
After bathing Hari as prescribed, following precisely the stated procedure and using half the prescribed resources or even only a quarter, the wise person should reconstruct the temple by the same procedure and then bathe the Lotus-eyed Lord with twice the resources used for the conveyance. (130–131)

विभवेनानुलोमेन जपेन्मन्त्रान् पुनस्तथा। आराधयेज्जगन्नाथं ध्यायन् भक्त्या यथोदितम् ॥१३२॥
vibhavēnānulōmēna japēnmantrān punastathā। ārādhayējjagannāthaṁ dhyāyan bhaktyā yathōditam ॥132॥
[विभवेन + अनुलोमेन (vibhavēna + anulōmēna) - in accordance with his means; जपेत् (japēt) - he should recite; मन्त्रान् (mantrān) - the mantras; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तथा (tathā) - likewise; आराधयेत् (ārādhayēt) - he should worship; जगन्नाथं (jagannāthaṁ) - the Lord of the universe; ध्यायन् (dhyāyan) - meditating upon him; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; यथा + उदितम् (yathā + uditam) - as prescribed;]
In accordance with his means, he should likewise recite the mantras again. Meditating upon the Lord with devotion as prescribed, he should worship the Lord of the universe. (132)

यात्रापि पूर्ववत् तत्राप्युत्सवेषु च सर्वशः। कलशोक्तविधानेन पूजा बलिहृतिस्तथा ॥१३३॥

The procession should likewise be conducted as before. There, and at all festivals, worship and the presentation of the bali offering should be performed in every respect according to the procedure prescribed for the ritual vessel. (133)

उत्सवेषु सदा कार्या कलशश्चोत्सवादनु। यात्रा स्नानं च कर्तव्यं सम्यगुक्तविधानतः ॥१३४॥
utsavēṣu sadā kāryā kalaśaścōtsavādanu। yātrā snānaṁ ca kartavyaṁ samyaguktavidhānataḥ ॥134॥
[उत्सवेषु (utsavēṣu) - during festivals; सदा (sadā) - always; कार्या (kāryā) - is to be performed; कलशः (kalaśaḥ) - the kalaśa rite; च (ca) - and; उत्सवात् अनु (utsavāt anu) - after the festival; यात्रा (yātrā) - the procession; स्नानम् (snānam) - the bathing; च (ca) - and; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - are to be performed; सम्यक्-उक्त-विधानतः (samyak-ukta-vidhānataḥ) - according to the duly prescribed procedure;]
This should always be performed during festivals, as should the kalaśa rite. After the festival, the procession and bathing should be carried out according to the duly prescribed procedure. (134)

चोरचण्डालपतितश्वोदक्यादिप्रवेशने। शवाद्युपहतौ चैव पूजाविच्छेदने तथा ॥१३५॥
cōracaṇḍālapatitaśvōdakyādipravēśanē। śavādyupahatau caiva pūjāvicchēdanē tathā ॥135॥
[चोर + चण्डाल + पतित + श्व + उदक्या + आदि + प्रवेशने (cōra + caṇḍāla + patita + śva + udakyā + ādi + pravēśanē) - in the event of entry by a thief, a Caṇḍāla, a fallen person, a dog, a menstruating woman, or the like; शव + आदि + उपहतौ (śava + ādi + upahatau) - upon defilement by a corpse or the like; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; पूजा + विच्छेदने (pūjā + vicchēdanē) - upon interruption of worship; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
स्नपनोक्तेन मार्गेण प्रायश्चित्तकृतिः स्मृता। सर्वत्र विष्णुगायत्र्या होमः स्यादयुतावरः ॥१३६॥
snapanōktēna mārgēṇa prāyaścittakr̥tiḥ smr̥tā। sarvatra viṣṇugāyatryā hōmaḥ syādayutāvaraḥ ॥136॥
[स्नपन + उक्तेन (snapana + uktēna) - prescribed for the ritual bathing; मार्गेण (mārgēṇa) - by the procedure; प्रायश्चित्त + कृतिः (prāyaścitta + kr̥tiḥ) - performance of expiation; स्मृता (smr̥tā) - is prescribed; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - in every case; विष्णु + गायत्र्या (viṣṇu + gāyatryā) - with the Viṣṇu Gāyatrī; होमः (hōmaḥ) - homa; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; अयुत + अवरः (ayuta + avaraḥ) - having ten thousand as its minimum;]
If a thief, a Caṇḍāla, a fallen person, a dog, a menstruating woman, or the like enters; if the site is defiled by a corpse or the like; or if worship is interrupted, expiation should be performed according to the procedure prescribed for the ritual bathing. In every case, the homa with the Viṣṇu Gāyatrī should number at least ten thousand. (135–136)

नावाव्याद्याभिधानानु विग्रहे धीमहे तथा। प्रचोदयात् तृतीयाधस्तन्नो गायत्रिनामिका ॥१३७॥

[नावाव्यादि-अभिधान-अनु (nāvāvyādi-abhidhāna-anu) - following the designation beginning with Nāvāvyā; विग्रहे (vigrahē) - on the image; धीमहे (dhīmahē) - we meditate; तथा (tathā) - likewise; प्रचोदयात् (pracōdayāt) - may he impel; तृतीय-अधः (tr̥tīya-adhaḥ) - beneath the third; तत् + नः (tat + naḥ) - that one for us; गायत्रि-नामिका (gāyatri-nāmikā) - bearing the name Gāyatrī;]
Following the designation beginning with Nāvāvyā, one likewise has, on the image, “We meditate,” and beneath the third, “May that one impel us.” This is called the Gāyatrī. (137)

दुर्गाशिवस्कन्दसूर्यविनायकमुखानपि। स्थापयेदुक्तमार्गेण तत्तन्मन्त्रैः स्मरन् हरिम् ॥१३८॥
durgāśivaskandasūryavināyakamukhānapi। sthāpayēduktamārgēṇa tattanmantraiḥ smaran harim ॥138॥
[दुर्गा (durgā) - Durgā; शिव (śiva) - Śiva; स्कन्द (skanda) - Skanda; सूर्य (sūrya) - Sūrya; विनायक (vināyaka) - Vināyaka; मुखान् (mukhān) - those headed by; अपि (api) - also; स्थापयेत् (sthāpayēt) - one should install; उक्तमार्गेण (uktamārgēṇa) - by the prescribed procedure; तत् + तत् + मन्त्रैः (tat + tat + mantraiḥ) - with their respective mantras; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering; हरिम् (harim) - Hari;]
One should also install the deities headed by Durgā, Śiva, Skanda, Sūrya, and Vināyaka according to the prescribed procedure, using their respective mantras while remembering Hari. (138)

गोलकद्वितयं विष्णोस्त्रितयं वापि कीर्तिमान्। अन्यदेवप्रतिष्ठासु तदन्तश्चिन्तयेद्धरिम् ॥१३९॥
gōlakadvitayaṁ viṣṇōstritayaṁ vāpi kīrtimān। anyadēvapratiṣṭhāsu tadantaścintayēddharim ॥139॥
[गोलक-द्वितयम् (gōlaka-dvitayam) - a pair of golakas; विष्णोः (viṣṇōḥ) - for Viṣṇu; त्रितयम् (tritayam) - a triad; वा + अपि (vā + api) - or even; कीर्तिमान् (kīrtimān) - a man of renown; अन्य-देव-प्रतिष्ठासु (anya-dēva-pratiṣṭhāsu) - in installations of other deities; तत्-अन्तः (tat-antaḥ) - within it; चिन्तयेत् (cintayēt) - should contemplate; हरिम् (harim) - Hari;]
A man of renown should install two or even three golakas for Viṣṇu. When installing other deities, he should contemplate Hari within each one. (139)

विष्णुस्मृतिविहीना तु पूजा स्यादासुरी तथा। गृह्णन्ति देवता नैतां ततः स्याद्देशविप्लवः ॥ व्याधिचोरादिभिस्तस्मादन्तर्ध्येयो हरिः सदा ॥१४०॥
viṣṇusmr̥tivihīnā tu pūjā syādāsurī tathā। gr̥hṇanti dēvatā naitāṁ tataḥ syāddēśaviplavaḥ ॥ vyādhicōrādibhistasmādantardhyēyō hariḥ sadā ॥140॥
[विष्णु-स्मृति-विहीना (viṣṇu-smr̥ti-vihīnā) - devoid of remembrance of Viṣṇu; तु (tu) - however; पूजा (pūjā) - worship; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; आसुरी (āsurī) - demonic; तथा (tathā) - in that manner; गृह्णन्ति (gr̥hṇanti) - accept; देवताः (dēvatāḥ) - the deities; न + एताम् (na + ētām) - not this worship; ततः (tataḥ) - as a consequence; स्यात् (syāt) - would occur; देश-विप्लवः (dēśa-viplavaḥ) - upheaval in the land; व्याधि-चोर-आदिभिः (vyādhi-cōra-ādibhiḥ) - through diseases thieves and the like; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अन्तः (antaḥ) - within; ध्येयः (dhyēyaḥ) - is to be meditated upon; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; सदा (sadā) - always;]
Worship performed without remembrance of Viṣṇu is demonic. The deities do not accept it, and consequently the land is afflicted by disease, thieves, and other disturbances. Therefore, Hari should always be contemplated within. (140)

विष्णुभक्तिविहीनस्य गतिः स्यान्न तु शुभा क्वचित्। भक्तस्याप्यन्यदेवेषु तस्माद् ध्येयो हरिः सदा ॥१४१॥
viṣṇubhaktivihīnasya gatiḥ syānna tu śubhā kvacit। bhaktasyāpyanyadēvēṣu tasmād dhyēyō hariḥ sadā ॥141॥
[विष्णु + भक्ति + विहीनस्य (viṣṇu + bhakti + vihīnasya) - of one devoid of devotion to Viṣṇu; गतिः (gatiḥ) - destiny; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - however; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; क्वचित् (kvacit) - ever; भक्तस्य (bhaktasya) - of one devoted; अपि (api) - even; अन्य + देवेषु (anya + dēvēṣu) - to other deities; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ध्येयः (dhyēyaḥ) - to be meditated upon; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; सदा (sadā) - always;]
One who lacks devotion to Viṣṇu can never attain an auspicious destiny, even if devoted to other deities. Therefore, Hari should always be contemplated. (141)

संस्मृतो भगवान् विष्णुः सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गलः। समस्ताभीष्टदायी स्यात् तेन ध्येयोखिलैर्जनैः ॥१४२॥
saṁsmr̥tō bhagavān viṣṇuḥ sarvamaṅgalamaṅgalaḥ। samastābhīṣṭadāyī syāt tēna dhyēyōkhilairjanaiḥ ॥142॥
[संस्मृतः (saṁsmr̥taḥ) - when remembered; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; सर्व + मङ्गल + मङ्गलः (sarva + maṅgala + maṅgalaḥ) - the auspiciousness of everything auspicious; समस्त + अभीष्ट + दायी (samasta + abhīṣṭa + dāyī) - the giver of all that is desired; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; तेन (tēna) - therefore; ध्येयः (dhyēyaḥ) - should be meditated upon; अखिलैः (akhilaiḥ) - by all; जनैः (janaiḥ) - people;]
When remembered, Lord Viṣṇu, the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, grants everything desired. Therefore, everyone should meditate upon him. (142)

पुरुषोव्यक्तं च महानहङ्कारो मनस्तथा। दशेन्द्रियाणि शब्दाद्याः भूतेताः पञ्चविंशतिः ॥१४३॥
puruṣōvyaktaṁ ca mahānahaṅkārō manastathā। daśēndriyāṇi śabdādyāḥ bhūtētāḥ pañcaviṁśatiḥ ॥143॥
[पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - puruṣa; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - the unmanifest; च (ca) - and; महान् (mahān) - the mahat principle; अहङ्कारः (ahaṅkāraḥ) - egoity; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तथा (tathā) - likewise; दश + इन्द्रियाणि (daśa + indriyāṇi) - the ten faculties; शब्द + आद्याः (śabda + ādyāḥ) - those beginning with sound; भूतेताः (bhūtētāḥ) - these elements; पञ्चविंशतिः (pañcaviṁśatiḥ) - twenty-five;]
Puruṣa, the unmanifest, the principle of Mahat, egoity, mind, the ten faculties, those beginning with sound, and the elements—these constitute the twenty-five. (143)

तत्त्वाख्याः कालमाये च नियतिर्मतिरेव च। विद्या कला प्रवृत्तिश्च द्वात्रिंशत्तत्त्वसङ्ग्रहः ॥१४४॥
tattvākhyāḥ kālamāyē ca niyatirmatirēva ca। vidyā kalā pravr̥ttiśca dvātriṁśattattvasaṅgrahaḥ ॥144॥
[तत्त्व + आख्याः (tattva + ākhyāḥ) - designated as tattvas; काल + माये (kāla + māyē) - Time and Māyā; च (ca) - and; नियतिः (niyatiḥ) - determination; मतिः (matiḥ) - intellect; एव (ēva) - itself; च (ca) - and; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; कला (kalā) - capacity; प्रवृत्तिः (pravr̥ttiḥ) - activity; च (ca) - and; द्वात्रिंशत् (dvātriṁśat) - thirty-two; तत्त्व + सङ्ग्रहः (tattva + saṅgrahaḥ) - collection of tattvas;]
Time, Māyā, determination, intellect, knowledge, capacity, and activity are also designated as tattvas, forming a collection of thirty-two tattvas. (144)

स्फूर्तिः संवित् प्रतिष्ठा च शक्तिरित्यपराणि च। महालक्ष्मीस्वरूपाणि ह्येकादश विदो विदुः। विष्णोरपि हि रूपाणि तन्नाम्नैकादशैव तु ॥१४५॥
sphūrtiḥ saṁvit pratiṣṭhā ca śaktirityaparāṇi ca। mahālakṣmīsvarūpāṇi hyēkādaśa vidō viduḥ। viṣṇōrapi hi rūpāṇi tannāmnaikādaśaiva tu ॥145॥
[स्फूर्तिः (sphūrtiḥ) - Sphūrti; संवित् (saṁvit) - Saṃvit; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - Pratiṣṭhā; च (ca) - and; शक्तिः (śaktiḥ) - Śakti; इति (iti) - thus named; अपराणि (aparāṇi) - the remaining ones; च (ca) - and; महालक्ष्मी-स्वरूपाणि (mahālakṣmī-svarūpāṇi) - forms of Mahālakṣmī; हि (hi) - indeed; एकादश (ēkādaśa) - eleven; विदः (vidaḥ) - the learned; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; विष्णोः (viṣṇōḥ) - of Viṣṇu; अपि (api) - also; हि (hi) - indeed; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; तत्-नाम्ना (tat-nāmnā) - bearing those names; एकादश (ēkādaśa) - eleven; एव (ēva) - exactly; तु (tu) - but;]
प्रधानोपमवर्णानि द्विभुजान्यप्यशेषतः। कृताञ्जलिपुटान्येव प्रधानं तं हरिं प्रति ॥१४६॥
pradhānōpamavarṇāni dvibhujānyapyaśēṣataḥ। kr̥tāñjalipuṭānyēva pradhānaṁ taṁ hariṁ prati ॥146॥
[प्रधान-उपम-वर्णानि (pradhāna-upama-varṇāni) - having a complexion resembling the principal one; द्विभुजानि (dvibhujāni) - two-armed; अपि (api) - also; अशेषतः (aśēṣataḥ) - without exception; कृत-अञ्जलि-पुटानि (kr̥ta-añjali-puṭāni) - with palms joined in reverence; एव (ēva) - indeed; प्रधानम् (pradhānam) - principal; तम् (tam) - that; हरिम् (harim) - Hari; प्रति (prati) - toward;]
The remaining forms are Sphūrti, Saṃvit, Pratiṣṭhā, and Śakti. The learned know eleven forms of Mahālakṣmī and likewise exactly eleven forms of Viṣṇu bearing the same names. All these forms, without exception, resemble the principal form in complexion, have two arms, and hold their palms joined in reverence toward Hari as the principal deity. (145–146)

सर्वाण्येतानि तत्त्वानि ब्रह्मा तु पुरुषः स्मृतः। महांश्चाव्यक्तनाम्नी तु ब्रह्माणी सम्प्रकीर्तिता ॥१४७॥
sarvāṇyētāni tattvāni brahmā tu puruṣaḥ smr̥taḥ। mahāṁścāvyaktanāmnī tu brahmāṇī samprakīrtitā ॥147॥
[सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एतानि (ētāni) - these; तत्त्वानि (tattvāni) - principles; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; तु (tu) - however; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - Puruṣa; स्मृतः (smr̥taḥ) - is regarded as; महान् + च (mahān + ca) - and Mahat; अव्यक्त-नाम्नी (avyakta-nāmnī) - bearing the name Avyakta; तु (tu) - while; ब्रह्माणी (brahmāṇī) - Brahmāṇī; सम्प्रकीर्तिता (samprakīrtitā) - is proclaimed;]
All of these are principles. Brahmā is regarded as both Puruṣa and Mahat, while Brahmāṇī is said to bear the name Avyakta. (147)

एवं वायुरपि ज्ञेयो भारती चापि तत्त्रयम्। रुद्रोहङ्कार उद्दिष्टः स्कन्देन्द्रौ मन उच्यते ॥१४८॥
ēvaṁ vāyurapi jñēyō bhāratī cāpi tattrayam। rudrōhaṅkāra uddiṣṭaḥ skandēndrau mana ucyatē ॥148॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - likewise; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; अपि (api) - also; ज्ञेयः (jñēyaḥ) - is to be understood; भारती (bhāratī) - Bhāratī; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तत् + त्रयम् (tat + trayam) - that triad; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; अहङ्कारः (ahaṅkāraḥ) - ahaṃkāra; उद्दिष्टः (uddiṣṭaḥ) - is designated; स्कन्द + इन्द्रौ (skanda + indrau) - Skanda and Indra; मनः (manaḥ) - manas; उच्यते (ucyatē) - are said to be;]
Vāyu and Bhāratī are likewise to be understood as that triad. Rudra is identified with ahaṃkāra, while Skanda and Indra are identified with manas. (148)

अहङ्कारः शेषवीन्द्रावपि विद्वद्भिरीरितौ। दिग्वायुसूनुसूर्याश्च वरुणश्चाश्विनावपि ॥१४९॥

वह्निदक्षाविन्द्रसूनुर्मित्रश्चैव मनुस्तथा। इन्द्रियाख्याः शब्दनामा बृहस्पतिरुदाहृतः ॥१५०॥
vahnidakṣāvindrasūnurmitraścaiva manustathā। indriyākhyāḥ śabdanāmā br̥haspatirudāhr̥taḥ ॥150॥
[वह्नि + दक्षौ (vahni + dakṣau) - Fire and Dakṣa; इन्द्र + सूनुः (indra + sūnuḥ) - Indra’s son; मित्रः (mitraḥ) - Mitra; च + एव (ca + ēva) - and also; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; तथा (tathā) - likewise; इन्द्रिय + आख्याः (indriya + ākhyāḥ) - called the sense faculties; शब्द + नामा (śabda + nāmā) - bearing the name Sound; बृहस्पतिः (br̥haspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; उदाहृतः (udāhr̥taḥ) - is declared;]
The learned also identify Śeṣa and Vīndra with ahaṃkāra. The quarters, Vāyu’s son, Sūrya, Varuṇa, the two Aśvins, Fire, Dakṣa, Indra’s son, Mitra, and Manu are known as the sense faculties. Bṛhaspati is said to bear the name “Sound.” (149–150)

[अन्ये (anyē) - others; तु (tu) - however; सूनवः (sūnavaḥ) - sons; वायोः (vāyōḥ) - of Vāyu; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; अपि (api) - also; प्रकीर्तिताः (prakīrtitāḥ) - are proclaimed; एतेषु (ētēṣu) - among these; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Blessed Lord; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; प्रधानतनुः (pradhānatanuḥ) - the principal form; एव (ēva) - alone; तु (tu) - but;]
Others are said to be sons of Vāyu and also of Rudra; among all these, however, the Blessed Lord Viṣṇu alone is the principal form. (151)

ध्येयः परात्मनोर्मध्ये तत्त्वनाम तदर्थयोः। जपे न्यासे नमोन्तस्तु स्वाहान्तो होमकर्मणि ॥१५२॥
dhyēyaḥ parātmanōrmadhyē tattvanāma tadarthayōḥ। japē nyāsē namōntastu svāhāntō hōmakarmaṇi ॥152॥
[ध्येयः (dhyēyaḥ) - is to be meditated upon; परात्मनोः (parātmanōḥ) - of the two Supreme Selves; मध्ये (madhyē) - between; तत्त्व-नाम + तद्-अर्थयोः (tattva-nāma + tad-arthayōḥ) - the name of the principle and its referent; जपे (japē) - in recitation; न्यासे (nyāsē) - in ritual placement; नमः + अन्तः (namaḥ + antaḥ) - ending in namaḥ; तु (tu) - but; स्वाहा + अन्तः (svāhā + antaḥ) - ending in svāhā; होम-कर्मणि (hōma-karmaṇi) - in the oblation rite;]
He should be contemplated between the two Supreme Selves—the name of the principle and its referent. In recitation and ritual placement, the formula ends in namaḥ; in the oblation rite, it ends in svāhā. (152)

त्रिचतुष्षड्दशावृत्तिरेतेषां तु हुतादिके। न्यासोङ्गुलीषूरुबाहुमध्येषु व्युत्क्रमे स्मृतः ॥ क्रमे विपर्ययेणात्र शक्त्यादित्वं प्रकीर्तितम् ॥१५३॥
tricatuṣṣaḍdaśāvr̥ttirētēṣāṁ tu hutādikē। nyāsōṅgulīṣūrubāhumadhyēṣu vyutkramē smr̥taḥ ॥ kramē viparyayēṇātra śaktyāditvaṁ prakīrtitam ॥153॥
[त्रि + चतुः + षट् + दश + आवृत्तिः (tri + catuḥ + ṣaṭ + daśa + āvr̥ttiḥ) - repetition three four six and ten times; एतेषाम् (ētēṣām) - of these; तु (tu) - however; हुत + आदिके (huta + ādikē) - in offering and the like; न्यासः (nyāsaḥ) - ritual placement; अङ्गुलीषु (aṅgulīṣu) - on the fingers; ऊरु + बाहु + मध्येषु (ūru + bāhu + madhyēṣu) - on the middle portions of the thighs and arms; व्युत्क्रमे (vyutkramē) - in reverse order; स्मृतः (smr̥taḥ) - is prescribed; क्रमे (kramē) - in regular order; विपर्ययेण (viparyayēṇa) - by inversion; अत्र (atra) - here; शक्ति + आदित्वम् (śakti + āditvam) - the status of Śakti as first; प्रकीर्तितम् (prakīrtitam) - is proclaimed;]
In offerings and related rites, these are to be repeated three, four, six, or ten times. Ritual placement on the fingers and at the midpoints of the thighs and arms is prescribed in reverse order; when performed in the regular order, this is inverted, and Śakti is said to come first. (153)

ऋषिच्छन्दोदेवताङ्गध्यानानुक्तौ प्रधानवत्। ज्ञेया मन्त्राः समस्तास्ते पृथङ्मोक्षादिदायकाः ॥१५४॥
r̥ṣicchandōdēvatāṅgadhyānānuktau pradhānavat। jñēyā mantrāḥ samastāstē pr̥thaṅmōkṣādidāyakāḥ ॥154॥
[ऋषि (r̥ṣi) - seer; छन्दस् (chandas) - meter; देवता (dēvatā) - deity; अङ्ग (aṅga) - limbs; ध्यान (dhyāna) - meditation; अनुक्तौ (anuktau) - when these are not stated; प्रधानवत् (pradhānavat) - as with the principal mantra; ज्ञेयाः (jñēyāḥ) - are to be understood; मन्त्राः (mantrāḥ) - mantras; समस्ताः (samastāḥ) - all; ते (tē) - those; पृथक् (pr̥thak) - individually; मोक्ष-आदि-दायकाः (mōkṣa-ādi-dāyakāḥ) - bestowers of liberation and the like;]
When their seer, meter, deity, limbs, and meditation are not specified, all these mantras should be understood to follow the principal mantra. Individually, they confer liberation and other benefits. (154)

तन्त्रमार्गास्तु हरिणा ह्यसङ्ख्याः कीर्तिता अपि। तेष्वयं सुगमो मार्गः सफलश्चानुतिष्ठताम् ॥१५५॥
tantramārgāstu hariṇā hyasaṅkhyāḥ kīrtitā api। tēṣvayaṁ sugamō mārgaḥ saphalaścānutiṣṭhatām ॥155॥
[तन्त्र + मार्गाः (tantra + mārgāḥ) - paths of tantra; तु (tu) - but; हरिणा (hariṇā) - by Hari; हि (hi) - indeed; असङ्ख्याः (asaṅkhyāḥ) - countless; कीर्तिताः (kīrtitāḥ) - proclaimed; अपि (api) - although; तेषु (tēṣu) - among them; अयम् (ayam) - this; सुगमः (sugamaḥ) - easy to follow; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - path; सफलः (saphalaḥ) - fruitful; च (ca) - and; अनुतिष्ठताम् (anutiṣṭhatām) - for those who practice it;]
Although Hari has proclaimed countless tantric paths, this path is easy to follow and fruitful for those who practice it. (155)

यावतो ह्यननुष्ठाने कर्मपूर्तिर्न विद्यते। तावत् समस्तं कथितं ह्यस्मिंस्तन्त्रे यथाविधि ॥१५६॥
yāvatō hyananuṣṭhānē karmapūrtirna vidyatē। tāvat samastaṁ kathitaṁ hyasmiṁstantrē yathāvidhi ॥156॥
[यावतः (yāvataḥ) - of whatever; हि (hi) - for; अननुष्ठाने (ananuṣṭhānē) - upon non-performance; कर्म-पूर्तिः (karma-pūrtiḥ) - completion of the rite; न (na) - does not; विद्यते (vidyatē) - occur; तावत् (tāvat) - all of that; समस्तम् (samastam) - in its entirety; कथितम् (kathitam) - has been stated; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मिन् तन्त्रे (asmin tantrē) - in this Tantra; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the prescribed procedure;]
Everything without whose performance a rite would remain incomplete has been fully set forth in this Tantra according to the prescribed procedure. (156)

प्रीयतेनेन मार्गेण पूजितो मुक्तिदो भवेत्। कामदश्च स्वभक्तानां भगवान् पुरुषोत्तमः ॥१५७॥
prīyatēnēna mārgēṇa pūjitō muktidō bhavēt। kāmadaśca svabhaktānāṁ bhagavān puruṣōttamaḥ ॥157॥
[प्रीयते (prīyatē) - is pleased; अनेन (anēna) - by this; मार्गेण (mārgēṇa) - method; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - when worshipped; मुक्तिदः (muktidaḥ) - bestower of liberation; भवेत् (bhavēt) - would become; कामदः (kāmadaḥ) - granter of desires; च (ca) - and; स्व + भक्तानाम् (sva + bhaktānām) - to his own devotees; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣōttamaḥ) - Puruṣottama;]
When worshiped according to this method, Lord Puruṣottama is pleased and grants his devotees liberation and the fulfillment of their desires. (157)

बहुचित्रजगद्बहुधाकरणात् परशक्तिरनन्तगुणः परमः ।
सुखरूपममुष्य पदं परमं स्मरतस्तु भविष्यति तत्सततम् ॥
"The one who has created this variegated vast universe with varied forms has infinite power and is of infinite auspicious qualities. He certainly bestows the highest state of bliss to those who meditate on his ever happy essence." -Dwādasha stōtra 4.3
