Taittirīyopaniṣat Bhāṣyam (तैत्तिरीयोपनिषत् भाष्यम्)
Taittirīyopaniṣat 02.16
यदा ह्येवैष एतस्मिन्नदृश्ये अनात्म्ये अनिरुक्ते अनिलयने अभयं प्रतिष्ठां विन्दते। अथ सोऽभयं गतो भवति। यदा ह्येवैष एतस्मिन्नुदरमन्तरं कुरुते। अथ तस्य भयं भवति। तत्त्वेव भयं विदुषोऽमन्वानस्य॥
yadā hyevaiṣa etasminnadṛśye anātmye anirukte anilayane abhayaṃ pratiṣṭhāṃ vindate। atha so'bhayaṃ gato bhavati। yadā hyevaiṣa etasminnudaramantaraṃ kurute। atha tasya bhayaṃ bhavati। tattveva bhayaṃ viduṣo'manvānasya॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - certainly; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this; अदृश्ये (adṛśye) - unseen; अनात्म्ये (anātmye) - without one-self; अनिरुक्ते (anirukte) - undefined; अनिलयने (anilayane) - without abode; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; प्रतिष्ठाम् (pratiṣṭhām) - foundation; विन्दते (vindate) - finds; अथ (atha) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; यदा (yadā) - when; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - certainly; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this; उदरम् (udaram) - belly; अन्तरम् (antaram) - difference; कुरुते (kurute) - makes; अथ (atha) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; विदुषः (viduṣaḥ) - of the knower; अमन्वानस्य (amanvānasya) - of one who perceives difference;]
When one finds the foundation of fearlessness in that which is unseen, that 'anātmya', undefined, and without abode, then he attains fearlessness. But when one creates distinction within this (i.e he is independent from this essence), then fear arises for him. That indeed is truly fear for the knower who perceives difference.
तदप्येष श्लोको भवति। भीषास्माद् वातः पवते। भीषोदेति सूर्यः। भीषाऽस्मादग्निश्चेन्द्रश्च। मृत्युर्धावति पञ्चम इति ॥१६॥
tad apy eṣa śloko bhavati। bhīṣāsmād vātaḥ pavate। bhīṣod eti sūryaḥ। bhīṣāsmād agniś cendraś ca। mṛtyur dhāvati pañcama iti ॥16॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अपि (api) - also; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; श्लोकः (ślokaḥ) - verse; भवति (bhavati) - arises; भीषा (bhīṣā) - from fear; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from him; वातः (vātaḥ) - wind; पवते (pavate) - blows; भीषा (bhīṣā) - from fear; उद् (ud) - up; एति (eti) - goes; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; भीषा (bhīṣā) - from fear; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from him; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; च (ca) - and; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; धावति (dhāvati) - runs; पञ्चमः (pañcamaḥ) - fifth; इति (iti) - thus;]
There is also this verse: "From fear of Him the wind blows, from fear the sun rises, from fear of Him fire and Indra, and Death as the fifth, run their courses."
Taittirīya Bhāshya 02.16
The Lord is said to be 'anātma', as He is different from the individual beings in terms of attributes. The supreme Viṣṇu alone is described as 'ā', as is higher than all other principles and beings. He is infinite in qualities, unexpressed and without dependence. An individual being begets fear when he thinks he is independent of Lord Vishnu. Liberated beings, such as the wise Vāyu and others, who governs the universe, are fearless because they always perform their duties directly to please Lord Viṣṇu.
"तस्माददृश्ये जैवानां गुणानामप्यसङ्गतेः। अनात्म्येऽथ गुणानन्त्यादनिरुक्ते निराश्रयात्॥ अनिलयनेऽभयत्वेन यदा ज्ञानेन तिष्ठति। तदाऽभयं हरिं गच्छेन्नैवाज्ञानी कथञ्चन॥
"tasmādadṛśye jaivānāṃ guṇānāmapyasaṅgateḥ। anātmye'tha guṇānantyādanirukte nirāśrayāt॥ anilayane'bhayatvena yadā jñānena tiṣṭhati। tadā'bhayaṃ hariṃ gacchennaivā-jñānī kathaṃcana॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अदृश्ये (adṛśye) - in the unseen; जैवानां (jaivānāṃ) - of living beings; गुणानाम् (guṇānām) - of qualities; अपि (api) - even; असङ्गतेः (asaṅgateḥ) - from non-association; अनात्म्ये (anātmye) - in not the individual being; अथ (atha) - then; गुणानन्त्यात् (guṇānantyāt) - from the infinity of qualities; अनिरुक्ते (anirukte) - in the unexpressed; निराश्रयात् (nirāśrayāt) - from being without support; अनिलयने (anilayane) - in the absence of abode; अभयत्वेन (abhayatvena) - by the state of fearlessness; यदा (yadā) - when; ज्ञानेन (jñānena) - by knowledge; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; तदा (tadā) - then; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; हरिम् (harim) - Hari (Vishnu); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should attain; नैव (naiva) - never; अज्ञानी (ajñānī) - the ignorant; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
"Therefore, that which is unseen and not associated even with the limited qualities of living beings is termed as 'anātma', i.e. not the individual being; He is infinite in qualities, unexpressed and without support. One attains Hari (the Supreme) when one is not dependent on any abode, is in a state of fearlessness and remains in knowledge; but the ignorant never attains Him in any way.
यदैतस्मिन् परे विष्णावुदरं जीवगत्वतः। भेदं करोति तेनैव भयमस्य महद् भवेत्॥
yadaitasmin pare viṣṇāvudaraṃ jīvagatvataḥ। bhedaṃ karoti tenaiva bhayamasya mahad bhavet॥
[यत् (yat) - which; एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this; परे (pare) - in the Supreme; विष्णौ (viṣṇau) - in Viṣṇu; उदरं (udaram) - womb; जीवगत्वतः (jīvagatvataḥ) - from the state of being a living being; भेदं (bhedam) - division / difference; करोति (karoti) - makes; तेन (tena) - by that; एव (eva) - indeed; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; अस्य (asya) - of him; महत् (mahat) - great; भवेत् (bhavet) - arises;]
If one creates division in this Supreme Lord Viṣṇu, the origin of all living beings, then from that very act, great fear arises for him.
आ इत्युक्तः परो विष्णुरेभ्य उच्च स एव तु। त उदा जीवसङ्घाः स्युरुदरं तद्गतान्तरम्॥ तदेव ब्रह्म भयकृद् विदुषोऽविदुषस्तथा। विदुषोऽल्पभयं कुर्याद् यावन्मुक्तिं व्रजत्यसौ॥
ā ity uktaḥ paro viṣṇur ebhya ucca sa eva tu। ta udā jīvasaṅghāḥ syur udaraṃ tadgatāntaram॥ tadeva brahma bhayakṛd viduṣo'viduṣas tathā। viduṣo'lpabhayaṃ kuryād yāvan muktiṃ vrajaty asau॥
[आ (ā) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; परो (paro) - supreme; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; एभ्यः (ebhyaḥ) - from these; उच्च (ucca) - higher; स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; त (ta) - they; उदा (udā) - arise; जीवसङ्घाः (jīvasaṅghāḥ) - groups of living beings; स्युः (syuḥ) - may be; उदरं (udaraṃ) - the belly; तत् (tat) - that; गत (gata) - gone; अन्तरम् (antaram) - within; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; भयकृत् (bhayakṛt) - creator of fear; विदुषः (viduṣaḥ) - of the wise; अविदुषः (aviduṣaḥ) - of the ignorant; तथा (tathā) - likewise; विदुषः (viduṣaḥ) - of the wise; अल्पभयम् (alpabhayam) - little fear; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should cause; यावत् (yāvat) - until; मुक्तिम् (muktim) - liberation; व्रजति (vrajati) - attains; असौ (asau) - he;]
The supreme Viṣṇu, thus described as 'ā' alone, is higher than all these. From him arise the groups of living beings, who may be within the belly, having entered there. That very Brahman is the source of fear for both the wise and the ignorant. For the wise, it causes only little fear until they attain liberation.
अथाभयं भवेद् ब्रह्म तस्य मुक्तस्य सर्वदा। तस्माद् वाय्वादयो देवा विद्वांसोऽपि विशेषतः॥
athābhayaṃ bhaved brahma tasya muktasya sarvadā। tasmād vāyvādayo devā vidvāṃso'pi viśeṣataḥ॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; may be; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; the Absolute; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; मुक्तस्य (muktasya) - of the liberated; of the freed one; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; वाय्वादयः (vāyvādayaḥ) - Vāyu and others; the gods beginning with Vāyu; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; विद्वांसः (vidvāṃsaḥ) - the wise; the learned; अपि (api) - even; also; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; particularly;]
Now, for the liberated one, Brahman is always fearlessness. Especially this is so with the gods beginning with Vāyu, the wise.
भीताः स्वकर्म कुर्वन्ति विष्णोः प्रीत्यर्थमञ्जसा। अमन्वानस्य नुर्विष्णुः कुर्यान्नित्यं महद्भयम्॥ तमआख्यमनुत्थानम् .... ॥"
bhītāḥ svakarma kurvanti viṣṇoḥ prītyarthamañjasā। amanvānasya nurviṣṇuḥ kuryānnityaṃ mahadbhayam॥ tamākhyamanutthānam .... ॥"
[भीताः (bhītāḥ) - afraid; स्वकर्म (svakarma) - one's own action; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - they do; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; प्रीत्यर्थम् (prītyartham) - for the sake of pleasing; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - directly; अमन्वानस्य (amanvānasya) - of one who does not follow; नु (nu) - indeed; उर्विष्णुः (urviṣṇuḥ) - the great Viṣṇu; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; महत् (mahat) - great; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तम् (tam) - that; आख्यम् (ākhyam) - named; अनुत्थानम् (anutthānam) - inaction;]
Out of fear, people perform their duties directly to please Lord Viṣṇu. For one who does not follow, the great Viṣṇu would always instil great fear. This is called inaction ...."

बहुचित्रजगद्बहुधाकरणात् परशक्तिरनन्तगुणः परमः ।
सुखरूपममुष्य पदं परमं स्मरतस्तु भविष्यति तत्सततम् ॥
"The one who has created this variegated vast universe with varied forms has infinite power and is of infinite auspicious qualities. He certainly bestows the highest state of bliss to those who meditate on his ever happy essence." -Dwādasha stōtra 4.3
