यस्मिन्निदं विचिकित्सन्ति मृत्यो साम्पराये महति ब्रूहि नस्तत्। योऽयं वरो गूढमनुप्रविष्टो नान्यं तस्मात् नचिकेता वृणीते ॥२८॥

yasminn idaṁ vicikitsanti mṛtyo sāmparāye mahati brūhi nas tat. yo'yaṁ varo gūḍham anupraviṣṭaḥ nānyaṁ tasmāt naciketā vṛṇīte ॥28॥

[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; इदम् (idam) - this; विचिकित्सन्ति (vicikitsanti) - they doubt; मृत्यः (mṛtyo) - O Death; साम्पराये (sāmparāye) - concerning the hereafter; महति (mahati) - great; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; नः (naḥ) - to us; तत् (tat) - that; यः (yaḥ) - which; अयम् (ayam) - this; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; गूढम् (gūḍham) - hidden; अनुप्रविष्टः (anupraviṣṭaḥ) - entered into; न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyam) - another; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - than that; नचिकेता (naciketā) - Naciketas; वृणीते (vṛṇīte) - chooses;]

O Death, regarding that great mystery about which people doubt — tell us that. This boon, which is deeply hidden, Naciketas chooses none other than that.

Bhāṣya 1.1.28

'mahati sāmparāye' - means concerning the great hereafter, which is nothing but liberation.

महति साम्पराये मुक्तौ॥

mahati sāmparāye muktau॥

[महति (mahati) - great; साम्पराये (sāmparāye) - in the hereafter; मुक्तौ (muktau) - in liberation;]

That concerning 'mahati sāmparāye', i.e the great hereafter, is liberation.
