Bhagavad Gīta Bhāshya and Tātparya
B.G 17.27 and 28
यज्ञे तपसि दाने च स्थितिः सदिति चोच्यते। कर्म चैव तदर्थीयं सदित्येवाभिधीयते ॥२७॥
yajñe tapasi dāne ca sthitiḥ saditi cocyate। karma caiva tadarthīyaṃ sadityevābhidhīyate ॥27॥
[यज्ञे (yajñe) - in sacrifice; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; दाने (dāne) - in charity; च (ca) - and; स्थितिः (sthitiḥ) - steadiness; सत् (sat) - real; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; कर्म (karma) - action; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; तदर्थीयं (tadarthīyaṃ) - for that purpose; सत् (sat) - real; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - certainly; अभिधीयते (abhidhīyate) - is called;]
Steadiness in sacrifice, austerity, and charity is referred to as 'sat', i.e. real, and so also is the action taken for that purpose.
अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं कृतं च यत्। असदित्युच्यते पार्थ न च तत् प्रेत्य नो इह ॥२८॥
aśraddhayā hutaṃ dattaṃ tapastaptaṃ kṛtaṃ ca yat। asadityucyate pārtha na ca tat pretya no iha ॥28॥
[अश्रद्धया (aśraddhayā) - without faith; हुतं (hutaṃ) - offered; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - performed; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; असत् (asat) - unreal; इति (iti) - thus; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; नः (naḥ) - for us; इह (iha) - here;]
O son of Pritha, whatever is offered, given, or performed without faith is considered 'asat', i.e. unreal. It benefits us neither in this life nor in the afterlife.
Gīta Tātparya 17.27 and 28
The sound 'Om tat sat' is renowned as the name of Lord Vishnu. A mantra recited without understanding its meaning is ineffective and serves only to protect one's ego. Therefore, the true meaning of the mantra should be understood. For the purpose of attaining the fruits of sāttvika actions, one must act with devotion and remembrance of the divine. The sentiment is - anything other than the truth is false.
तत्सम्बन्धित्वादेव कर्मादि सत्। ओं तत्सदिति नाम्नां विष्णौः प्रसिद्धत्वात्।
tatsambandhitvādeva karmādi sat। oṃ tatsaditi nāmnāṃ viṣṇauḥ prasiddhatvāt।
[तत् (tat) - that; सम्बन्धित्वात् (sambandhitvāt) - due to connection; एव (eva) - indeed; कर्म (karma) - action; आदि (ādi) - beginning; सत् (sat) - existence; ओं (oṃ) - Om; तत् (tat) - that; सदिति (saditi) - as Sat; नाम्नाम् (nāmnām) - of names; विष्णौः (viṣṇauḥ) - of Vishnu; प्रसिद्धत्वात् (prasiddhatvāt) - due to fame;]
Because of its connection with THAT, actions and such austerities are called 'sat', i.e. real. The sound 'Om tat sat' is thus renowned as the name of Lord Vishnu.
"स्रवत्यनोङ्कृतं ब्रह्म परस्ताच्च विशीर्यते। अनोऽङ्कृतं आसुरं कर्म"
"sravatyanoṅkṛtaṃ brahma parastācca viśīryate। ano'ṅkr̥taṁ āsuraṁ karma"
[स्रवति (sravati) - flows; अनः (anaḥ) - breath; अङ्कृतं (aṅkṛtaṃ) - marked; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; परस्तात् (parastāt) - beyond; च (ca) - and; विशीर्यते (viśīryate) - disintegrates; अनः (anaḥ) - breath; अनोङ्कृतस्य (anoṅkṛtasya) - of the unmarked; आसुरं (āsuraṃ) - demonic; कर्म (karma) - action;]
"The breath marked with Om, flows beyond and disintegrates into Brahman. The unmarked breath is considered a demonic action."
इति श्रुतेः अनोङ्कृतस्य आसुरत्वप्रसिद्धेः।
iti śruteḥ anoṅkṛtasya āsuratvaprasiddheḥ।
[इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतेः (śruteḥ) - of the heard; अनोङ्कृतस्य (anoṅkṛtasya) - of the unmarked; आसुरत्वप्रसिद्धेः (āsuratvaprasiddheḥ) - of the fame of demonhood;]
Thus, it is known from the scriptures about the fame of demon hood of the unmarked.
"अनर्थज्ञोदितो मन्त्रो निरर्थस्त्राति मानतः। यन्मन्त्रस्तेन कथितो मन्त्रार्थो ज्ञेय एव तत्॥"
anarthajñodito mantro nirarthastrāti mānataḥ। yanmantrastena kathito mantrārtho jñeya eva tat॥
[अनर्थज्ञोदितः (anarthajñoditaḥ) - spoken by one ignorant of meaning; मन्त्रः (mantraḥ) - a mantra; निरर्थः (nirarthaḥ) - meaningless; त्राति (trāti) - protects; मानतः (mānataḥ) - from pride; यत् (yat) - which; मन्त्रः (mantraḥ) - mantra; तेन (tena) - by him; कथितः (kathitaḥ) - spoken; मन्त्रार्थः (mantrārthaḥ) - meaning of the mantra; ज्ञेयः (jñeyaḥ) - should be known; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]

तदर्थत्वेन फलानभिसन्धिपूर्वककर्मण एव सात्विकत्वाच्च। तद्भक्त्या तत्स्मरणपूर्वकमेव सदन्यदसदेवेति भावः। राजसस्यापि असदन्तर्भाव एव। विष्णुश्रद्धारहितत्वात्॥
tadarthatvena phalānabhisandhipūrvakakarmaṇa eva sāttvikatvācca। tadbhaktyā tatsmaraṇapūrvakameva sadanyadasadeveti bhāvaḥ। rājasasyāpi asadantarbhāva eva। viṣṇuśraddhārahitatvāt॥
[तदर्थत्वेन (tadarthatvena) - for that purpose; फलानभिसन्धिपूर्वककर्मण (phalānabhisandhipūrvakakarmaṇa) - with action preceded by desire for fruits; एव (eva) - indeed; सात्विकत्वाच्च (sāttvikatvācca) - due to being sāttvika; तद्भक्त्या (tadbhaktyā) - with that devotion; तत्स्मरणपूर्वकमेव (tatsmaraṇapūrvakameva) - preceded by remembrance of that; सदन्यदसदेवेति (sadanyadasadeveti) - that other than truth is false; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - is the sentiment; राजसस्यापि (rājasasyāpi) - even of the rājasa; असदन्तर्भाव (asadantarbhāva) - inclusion of falsehood; एव (eva) - indeed; विष्णुश्रद्धारहितत्वात् (viṣṇuśraddhārahitatvāt) - due to lack of faith in Viṣṇu;]
For the purpose of attaining the fruits of actions, which are sāttvika, one must act with devotion and remembrance of the divine. The sentiment is that anything other than the truth is false. Even those with a rājasa nature include falsehood due to a lack of faith in Viṣṇu.
"सात्त्विकं मोक्षदं कर्म राजसं सृतिदुःखदम्। तामसं पातदं ज्ञेयं तत्कुर्यात् कर्म वैष्णवम्॥"
"sāttvikaṃ mokṣadaṃ karma rājasaṃ sṛtiduḥkhadam। tāmasaṃ pātadaṃ jñeyaṃ tatkuryāt karma vaiṣṇavam॥"
[सात्त्विकं (sāttvikaṃ) - pure; मोक्षदं (mokṣadam) - liberating; कर्म (karma) - action; राजसं (rājasaṃ) - passionate; सृति (sṛti) - cycle of birth and death; दुःखदम् (duḥkhadam) - causing sorrow; तामसं (tāmasaṃ) - ignorant; पातदं (pātadam) - leading to downfall; ज्ञेयं (jñeyaṃ) - to be known; तत् (tat) - that; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should perform; कर्म (karma) - action; वैष्णवम् (vaiṣṇavam) - related to Vishnu;]
"Actions performed in the mode of goodness lead to liberation, those in the mode of passion lead to sorrow in the cycle of birth and death, and those in the mode of ignorance lead to downfall. Therefore, one should perform actions that are related to Vishnu."
इत्याग्नेये॥

Thus ends the seventeenth chapter of the Śrī Bhagavad Gītā purport, composed by Ānandatīrtha Bhagavatpāda Ācārya.
॥ ओं तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासु उपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे श्रीकृष्णार्जुनसंवादे श्रद्धात्रयविभागयोगो नाम सप्तदशोध्यायः ॥
॥ oṁ tatsaditi śrīmadbhagavadgītāsu upaniṣatsu brahmavidyāyāṁ yogaśāstre śrīkṛṣṇārjunasaṁvāde śraddhātrayavibhāgayogo nāma saptadaśādhyāyaḥ ॥

'Om Tat Sat'. Thus, the seventeenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, named 'The Yoga of the Division of the Threefold Faith', is declared in the Upanishads, in the knowledge of Brahman, and in the science of Yoga, through the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Arjuna ends.

बहुचित्रजगद्बहुधाकरणात् परशक्तिरनन्तगुणः परमः ।
सुखरूपममुष्य पदं परमं स्मरतस्तु भविष्यति तत्सततम् ॥
"The one who has created this variegated vast universe with varied forms has infinite power and is of infinite auspicious qualities. He certainly bestows the highest state of bliss to those who meditate on his ever happy essence." -Dwādasha stōtra 4.3
