na veda-yajña-adhyayanaiḥ na dānaiḥ na ca kriyābhiḥ na tapobhiḥ ugraiḥ। evaṁ-rūpaḥ śakyaḥ ahaṁ nṛ-loke draṣṭuṁ tvad-anyena kuru-pravīra ॥48॥
[ न (na) - not; वेदयज्ञाध्ययनैः (veda-yajña-adhyayanaiḥ) - by study of the Vedas and sacrifices; न (na) - not; दानैः (dānaiḥ) - by gifts; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; क्रियाभिः (kriyābhiḥ) - by rituals; न (na) - not; तपोभिः (tapobhiḥ) - by austerities; उग्रैः (ugraiḥ) - severe; एवंरूपः (evaṁ-rūpaḥ) - in this form; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; नृलोके (nṛ-loke) - in the world of men; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to be seen; त्वदन्येन (tvad-anyena) - by anyone other than you; कुरुप्रवीर (kuru-pravīra) - O chief of the Kurus; ]
Not by study of the Vedas and sacrifices, not by gifts, not by rituals, not by severe austerities can I be seen in this form in the world of men by anyone other than you, O chief of the Kurus.
Gīta Tātparya 11.48
Emphasis is here on the position of Arjuna as a portion of Indra, in the hierarchy, which entitles him to such a vision.
वेदादिभिरपि त्वदवरेण एवं द्रष्टुमशक्यम्। अन्यथा "दृष्ट्वाद्भुतं रूपम्" इति विरोधः ॥४८॥
vedādibhiḥ api tvad-avareṇa evaṁ draṣṭum-aśakyam। anyathā "dṛṣṭvā adbhutaṁ rūpam" iti virodhaḥ ॥48॥
[ वेदादिभिः (vedādibhiḥ) - by the Vedas and the like; अपि (api) - even; त्वदवरेण (tvad-avareṇa) - by one inferior to you; एवम् (evam) - thus; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अशक्यम् (aśakyam) - impossible; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; इति (iti) - thus; विरोधः (virodhaḥ) - contradiction; ]
Even by the Vedas and the like, it is impossible to see thus by one inferior to you. Otherwise, the statement "having seen the wonderful form" would be contradictory.
