Bhagavad Gīta Bhāshya and Tātparya
B.G 8.12 and 13
सर्वद्वाराणि संयम्य मनो हृदि निरुध्य च। मूर्ध्न्याधायाऽत्मनः प्राणमास्थितो योगधारणाम् ॥१२॥
sarvadvārāṇi saṁyamya mano hr̥di nirudhya ca। mūrdhnyādhāyā'tmanaḥ prāṇamāsthito yogadhāraṇām ॥12॥
[सर्वद्वाराणि (sarvadvārāṇi) - all the gates (senses); संयम्य (saṁyamya) - having restrained; मनो (mano) - the mind; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the lord Nārāyaṇa; निरुध्य (nirudhya) - having fixed, restrained; च (ca) - and; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - in the head; आधाय (ādhāya) - having placed; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; प्राणम् (prāṇam) - the breath; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - being established; योगधारणाम् (yogadhāraṇām) - in the practice of yoga;]
Having restrained all the gates, fixing the mind in the lord Nārāyaṇa, placing the breath in the head, one remains established in the practice of yoga.
ओमित्येकाक्षरं ब्रह्म व्याहरन् मामनुस्मरन्। यः प्रयाति त्यजन् देहं स याति परमां गतिम् ॥१३॥
omityekākṣaraṁ brahma vyāharan māmanusmaran। yaḥ prayāti tyajan dehaṁ sa yāti paramāṁ gatim ॥13॥
[ओम् (om) - the sacred syllable Om; इति (iti) - thus; एकाक्षरम् (ekākṣaram) - the one syllable; ब्रह्म (brahma) - the Supreme Reality; व्याहरन् (vyāharan) - uttering, pronouncing; माम् (mām) - me; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering, meditating upon; यः (yaḥ) - whoever; प्रयाति (prayāti) - departs, goes forth; त्यजन् (tyajan) - abandoning; देहम् (deham) - the body; सः (saḥ) - he; याति (yāti) - attains, reaches; परमाम् (paramām) - the supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - destination, state;]
Whoever, uttering the one-syllabled Om, which is Brahman, and remembering Me, departs leaving the body, attains the supreme destination.
Gīta Bhāshya 8.12 and 13
It is not possible to have the mind in the heart and to place the breath in the head. Wherever lies the vital breath, the supreme Prāṇa, there lies the mind, and the living being. So the word 'hṛdi' in the current context means lord Nārāyaṇa. A testimonial is given to substantiate the same - "Because you take away the world, you are indeed called 'hṛdi'". 'yogadhāraṇām' means being engrossed in Yoga alone.
ब्रह्मनाडीं विना यद्यन्यत्र गच्छति तर्हि विना मोक्षं स्थानान्तरं प्राप्नोति इति सर्वद्वाराणि संयम्य।
brahmanāḍīṁ vinā yadyanyatra gacchati tarhi vinā mokṣaṁ sthānāntaraṁ prāpnoti iti sarvadvārāṇi saṁyamya।
[ब्रह्मनाडीं (brahmanāḍīṁ) - the subtle channel leading to Brahman; विना (vinā) - without; यत् (yat) - if; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere, to another place; गच्छति (gacchati) - one goes; तर्हि (tarhi) - then; विना (vinā) - without; मोक्षम् (mokṣam) - liberation; स्थानान्तरम् (sthānāntaram) - another place, different state of existence; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - one attains, reaches; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वद्वाराणि (sarvadvārāṇi) - all the openings; संयम्य (saṁyamya) - having restrained;]
If one departs through any other passage without the Brahman-nāḍī, then, without attaining liberation, one reaches another state of existence. Therefore one should restrain all other openings.
"निर्गच्छन् चक्षुषा सूर्यं दिशः श्रोत्रेण चैव हि॥"
"nirgacchan cakṣuṣā sūryaṁ diśaḥ śrotreṇa caiva hi॥"
[निर्गच्छन् (nirgacchan) - departing, going out; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with the eye, through vision; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - the sun; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; श्रोत्रेण (śrotreṇa) - with the ear, through hearing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly;]
"Departing (from the body) through the eye one reaches the Sun, and through the hearing the directions."
इति वचनात् व्यासयोगे। मोक्षधर्मे च।
iti vacanāt vyāsayoge। mokṣadharme ca।
[इति (iti) - thus, in this way; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the statement, from the saying; व्यासयोगे (vyāsayoge) - in the discourse of Vyāsa; मोक्षधर्मे (mokṣadharme) - in the doctrine of liberation; च (ca) - and;]
- it is stated thus in the Vyāsa-yoga. Same is stated in the Mokṣa-dharma (section of the Mahabharata) as well.
हृदि नारायणे।
hr̥di nārāyaṇe।
[हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; नारायणे (nārāyaṇe) - in Nārāyaṇa;]
The phrase 'In the heart' means in lord Nārāyaṇa.
"ह्रियते त्वया जगद्यस्मात् हृदित्येव प्रभाष्यसे॥"
"hriyate tvayā jagadyasmāt hr̥dityeva prabhāṣyase॥"
[ह्रियते (hriyate) - is taken away, is removed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; जगत् (jagat) - the world, the universe; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; हृदि (hṛdi) - called 'hṛdi'; एव (eva) - indeed, certainly; प्रभाष्यसे (prabhāṣyase) - you are called, you are spoken of;]
"Because you take away the world, you are indeed called 'hṛdi'."
इति पाद्मे।
iti pādme।
[इति (iti) - thus, in this way; पाद्मे (pādme) - in the Padma Purāṇa;]
- stated thus in the Padma Purāṇa.
न हि मूर्धनि प्राणे स्थिते र्हृदि मनसः स्थितिः सम्भवति -
na hi mūrdhani prāṇe sthite rhr̥di manasaḥ sthitiḥ sambhavati-
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed, certainly; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - in the head, at the crown; प्राणे (prāṇe) - in the vital breath, in the life force; स्थिते (sthite) - when situated, when established; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; स्थितिः (sthitiḥ) - stability, remaining, existence; सम्भवति (sambhavati) - occurs, is possible;]
Indeed, when the vital breath is situated in the head, the stability of the mind in the heart is not possible:
"यत्र प्राणो मनस्तत्र तत्र जीवः परस्तथा॥"
"yatra prāṇo manastatra tatra jīvaḥ parastathā॥"
[यत्र (yatra) - where; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - the vital breath; मनः (manaḥ) - the mind; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - the living being, the individual soul; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; तथा (tathā) - likewise, in the same way;]
"Wherever lies the vital breath, the supreme Prāṇa, there lies the mind, and the living being."
इति व्यासयोगे।
iti vyāsayoge।
[इति (iti) - thus, in this way; व्यासयोगे (vyāsayoge) - in the Vyāsayoga (the teaching or doctrine of Vyāsa);]
- stated thus in Vyāsayoga.
योगधारणाम् आस्थितः योगभरणे एव अभियुक्तः इत्यर्थः ॥१२, १३॥
yogadhāraṇām āsthitaḥ yogabharaṇe eva abhiyuktaḥ ityarthaḥ ॥12, 13॥
[योगधारणाम् (yogadhāraṇām) - the practice or concentration of yoga; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - established in, engaged in; योगभरणे (yogabharaṇe) - engrossment in yoga; एव (eva) - indeed, certainly, only; अभियुक्तः (abhiyuktaḥ) - devoted, engaged in, intent upon; इति (iti) - thus, in this way; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - meaning, interpretation;]
The word 'yogadhāraṇā' means being engrossed in yoga alone — this is the intended meaning.
Gīta Tātparya 8.12 and 13
'ekākṣaram' - the Supreme Brahman.
एकाक्षरवाच्यत्वात् एकाक्षरं परं ब्रह्म ॥१३॥
ekākṣaravācyatvāt ekākṣaraṁ paraṁ brahma ॥13॥
[एकाक्षरवाच्यत्वात् (ekākṣara-vācya-tvāt) - due to being denoted by the single syllable (Oṁ); एकाक्षरम् (ekākṣaram) - the single syllable (Oṁ); परम् (param) - supreme, highest; ब्रह्म (brahma) - the Absolute, the Supreme Reality;]
Since the Supreme Brahman is conveyed by the single syllable (Oṁ), he is called 'ekākṣaram', i.e. single syllable.

बहुचित्रजगद्बहुधाकरणात् परशक्तिरनन्तगुणः परमः ।
सुखरूपममुष्य पदं परमं स्मरतस्तु भविष्यति तत्सततम् ॥
"The one who has created this variegated vast universe with varied forms has infinite power and is of infinite auspicious qualities. He certainly bestows the highest state of bliss to those who meditate on his ever happy essence." -Dwādasha stōtra 4.3
