Bhagavad Gīta Bhāshya and Tātparya
B.G 2.59
विषया विनिवर्तन्ते निराहारस्य देहिनः। रसवर्जं रसोप्यस्य परं दृष्ट्वा निवर्तते ॥५९॥
viṣayā vinivartantē nirāhārasya dēhinaḥ। rasavarjaṁ rasōpyasya paraṁ dr̥ṣṭvā nivartatē ॥59॥
[ विषया विनिवर्तन्ते निराहारस्य देहिनः। रसवर्जं रसः अपि अस्य परं दृष्ट्वा निवर्तते॥
viṣayā = interest in material topics; vinivartantē = retreats; nirāhārasya = without food; dēhinaḥ = for the one with body; rasavarjaṁ = avoidance of taste for; rasaḥ = taste, passion; api = even; asya paraṁ dr̥ṣṭvā = by seeing the devine lord; nivartatē = disappears;]
The interest in material topic retreats by fasting for the one with the body. But even that avoidance of taste for taste, i.e. passion for passion, disappears by seeing that Devine lord.
Gīta Bhāshya 2.59
By fasting, one can only control senses. Only with transcendental knowledge does the interest in material topics disappear. 'rasa' is used here to mean 'passion' in general, and not taste specifically.
न च एतल्लक्षणं ज्ञानम् अयत्नतो अपि भवति इत्याह उत्तरैः श्लोकैः।
na ca ētallakṣaṇaṁ jñānam ayatnatō api bhavati ityāha uttaraiḥ ślōkaiḥ।
[na ca = Nor does; ētallakṣaṇaṁ = these characteristics; jñānam = the knowledge responsible for; ayatnatō = without effort; api = even; bhavati = happens; ityāha = thus told; uttaraiḥ ślōkaiḥ = in the previous (three) verses;]
The knowledge responsible for these characteristics does not come without effort is conveyed by the previous (three) verses.
निराहारत्वेन विषयभोगसामर्थ्याभाव एव भवति। इतरविषयाकाङ्क्षाभावः वा। रसाकाङ्क्षादिः न निवर्तते। स तु अपरोक्षज्ञानादेव निवर्तते इत्याह - विषया इति।
nirāhāratvēna viṣayabhōgasāmarthyābhāva ēva bhavati। itaraviṣayākāṅkṣābhāvaḥ vā। rasākāṅkṣādiḥ na nivartatē। sa tu aparōkṣajñānādēva nivartatē ityāha - viṣayā iti।
[nirāhāratvēna = staying without food; viṣayabhōgasāmarthyābhāva = capability to withstand material pleasures; ēva = only; bhavati = is achieved; itaraviṣayākāṅkṣābhāvaḥ vā = interest for other material topics; rasākāṅkṣādiḥ = or interest for taste; na nivartatē = does not disappear; sa tu = that; aparōkṣajñānādēva = only by the transendental knowledge; nivartatē = retreats; ityāha - viṣayā iti = thus told by 'viṣayā' verse;]
By staying without food, one gets only the ability to control material pleasures. Interest is other material topics or the interest in taste does not disappear. That retreats only by the transcendental knowledge - is conveyed by 'viṣayā' verse.
"इंद्रियाणि जयन्त्याशु निराहारा मनीषिणः। वर्जयित्वा तु रसनाम् असौ रस्ये च वर्धते॥"
इति वचनात् भागवते।
"iṁdriyāṇi jayantyāśu nirāhārā manīṣiṇaḥ। varjayitvā tu rasanām asau rasyē ca vardhatē॥"
iti vacanāt bhāgavatē।
[iṁdriyāṇi jayantyāśu = they win the senses; nirāhārā = without food; manīṣiṇaḥ = those capable; varjayitvā tu rasanām = by staying away from the taste; asau rasyē ca vardhatē = but, their interest in taste only grows;]

"The capable individuals win over the senses by abstaining from food. But, by staying away from the taste, their interest in taste only grows."

रसशब्दस्य रागवाचकत्वाच्च ॥५९॥
rasaśabdasya rāgavācakatvācca ॥59॥
[rasaśabdasya = 'rasa' word is used; rāgavācakatvācca = here to convey passion (rāga);]
