Bhagavad Gīta Bhāshya and Tātparya
B.G 2.42 and 43
यामिमां पुष्पितां वाचं प्रवदन्त्यविपश्चितः। वेदवादरताः पार्थ नान्यदस्तीति वादिनः ॥२-४२॥
कामात्मानः स्वर्गपरा जन्मकर्मफलप्रदाम्। क्रियाविशेषबहुलां भोगैश्वर्यगतिं प्रति ॥२-४३॥
yāmimāṁ puṣpitāṁ vācaṁ pravadantyavipaścitaḥ। vēdavādaratāḥ pārtha nānyadastīti vādinaḥ ॥2-42॥
kāmātmānaḥ svargaparā janmakarmaphalapradām। kriyāviśēṣabahulāṁ bhōgaiśvaryagatiṁ prati ॥2-43॥
[याम् इमां पुष्पितां वाचं प्रवदन्ति अविपश्चितः। वेदवादरताः पार्थ न अन्यत् अस्ति इति वादिनः ॥
काम आत्मानः स्वर्गपरा जन्मकर्म फलप्रदाम्। क्रियाविशेष बहुलां भोग ऐश्वर्य गतिं प्रति ॥
yām imāṁ = all these; puṣpitāṁ = flowery; vācaṁ = language; pravadanti =say; avipaścitaḥ = with an inaccurate vision of reality; vēdavādaratāḥ = advocaters of vedic ritualism; pārtha = Arjuna; na = not; anyat = others; asti = exists; iti = thus; vādinaḥ = they advocate; kāma = sensual pleasure; ātmānaḥ = having as essence; svargaparā = heaven as ultimate; janmakarma = actions after birth; phalapradām = are the fruits one gets;। kriyāviśēṣa = specialities of the actions; bahulāṁ = various; bhōga = enjoyments; aiśvarya = wealth; gatiṁ = end goal; prati = towards;]
O Pārtha, those who are attracted to the flowery language of Vedas with an inaccurate perception of reality, promote Vedic ritualism and claim that nothing else exists. Driven by sensual pleasures, they proclaim heaven as the ultimate reward for the actions performed after birth. They recommend various specialised actions directed towards material enjoyment and wealth as the end goal.
Gīta Bhāshya 2.42 and 43
Those who focus on the literal meaning of the Vēdas cannot grasp its true essence and suggest ritualism for wordly gains. Vēdas describe the supreme God indirectly.
स्युरवैदिकानि मतानि अव्यवसायात्मकानि। नतु वैदिकानि। तेपि हि केचित् कर्माणि स्वर्गादिफलान्येवाहुः इत्यत आह– 'यामिमामिति'।
syuravaidikāni matāni avyavasāyātmakāni। natu vaidikāni। tēpi hi kēcit karmāṇi svargādiphalānyēvāhuḥ ityata āha– 'yāmimāmiti'।
[syuravaidikāni = pleasing vedic; matāni = doctrines, opinion; avyavasāyātmakāni = are without striving towards 'ātman'; natu vaidikāni = they are opposed to Vedas; tēpi hi kēcit = even, they recommend as only; karmāṇi = various ritual actions; svargādiphalānyēvāhuḥ = end result as heaven; ityata āha = therefore it is said – 'yāmimāmiti' = 'yāmimām' verse]
Ritualists adhering to the literal meaning of Vedas do not methodically strive themselves towards 'ātman'. Hence, they are opposed to the essence of Vedas. They recommend various rituals with only heaven as the end result. Therefore, it is said – 'yāmimām'
यामाहुः तया इत्यन्वयः। मोक्षफलम् अपेक्ष्य स्वर्गादिपुष्पयुक्तां वाचं प्रवदन्ति। वेदवादरताः कर्मादिवाचकवेदवादरताः । वेदैः यन्मुखतः उच्यते तत्रैव रताः। नान्यदस्तीति वादिनः।
yāmāhuḥ tayā ityanvayaḥ। mōkṣaphalam apēkṣya svargādipuṣpayuktāṁ vācaṁ pravadanti। vēdavādaratāḥ karmādivācakavēdavādaratāḥ । vēdaiḥ yanmukhataḥ ucyatē tatraiva ratāḥ। nānyadastīti vādinaḥ।
[yāmāhuḥ tayā ityanvayaḥ = but you say the consequence; mōkṣaphalam = result as liberation; apēkṣya = expectation; svargādipuṣpayuktāṁ = heaven, flowery; vācaṁ = language; pravadanti = stated; vēdavādaratāḥ = 'vēdavādaratāḥ' are; karmādivācakavēdavādaratāḥ = those who recommend actions oriented towards Vedic rituals; vēdaiḥ = the Vedas; yanmukhataḥ = which are literally; ucyatē = conveyed; tatraiva = there only; ratāḥ = they are focussed; nānyadastīti = there is no other meaning; vādinaḥ = so they proclaim;]
"You say the consequence (of Vedic knowledge) as liberation, while the literal meaning promises heaven" -is the doubt. 'vēdavādaratāḥ' - are those who recommend actions oriented towards Vedic rituals. They are focussed on the literal meaning of the Vedas only. They proclaim there is no other meaning.
"परोक्षविषया वेदाः", "परोक्षप्रिया इव हि देवाः", "मां विधत्ते- भिधत्ते मां"
"parōkṣaviṣayā vēdāḥ", "parōkṣapriyā iva hi dēvāḥ", "māṁ vidhattē- bhidhattē māṁ"
[parōkṣaviṣayā = the topics are indirectly; vēdāḥ = the Vedas; parōkṣapriyā = they love topics coveyed indirectly; iva hi = certainly; dēvāḥ = the gods of Vedas; māṁ = me; vidhattē = conveyed through rules; bhidhattē = exposes; māṁ = me only;]
"The Vedas convey the topics indirectly", "The Vedic dieties certanly love topics conveyed indirectly", "I am only coveyed through Vedic rules. They render me only"
- इत्यादिभिः पारोक्ष्येण प्रायो भगवन्तं वदन्ति।
- ityādibhiḥ pārōkṣyēṇa prāyō bhagavantaṁ vadanti।
[ityādibhiḥ = all these statements; pārōkṣyēṇa = indirectly; prāyō = way of conveying; bhagavantaṁ = the supreme God; vadanti = speak to;]
- all these statements speak to an indirect way of conveying the supreme God.

बहुचित्रजगद्बहुधाकरणात् परशक्तिरनन्तगुणः परमः ।
सुखरूपममुष्य पदं परमं स्मरतस्तु भविष्यति तत्सततम् ॥
"The one who has created this variegated vast universe with varied forms has infinite power and is of infinite auspicious qualities. He certainly bestows the highest state of bliss to those who meditate on his ever happy essence." -Dwādasha stōtra 4.3
