B.G 9.23
येऽप्यन्यदेवता भक्ता यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः। तेऽपि मामेव कौन्तेय यजन्त्यविधिपूर्वकम् ॥२३॥
ye'pyanyadevatā bhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ। te'pi māmeva kaunteya yajantyavidhipūrvakam ॥23॥
[ये (ye) - Those who; अपि (api) - even; अन्यदेवता (anya-devatā) - other deities; भक्ताः (bhaktāḥ) - devotees; यजन्ते (yajante) - worship; श्रद्धया (śraddhayā) - with faith; अन्विताः (anvitāḥ) - endowed; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; माम् (mām) - Me (Krishna); एव (eva) - alone; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti (Arjuna); यजन्ति (yajanti) - worship; अविधिपूर्वकम् (avidhi-pūrvakam) - in a manner not according to proper method (without proper understanding of My true nature).]
Even those who, being devoted, worship other deities with faith - O Kaunteya, they too indeed worship Me, though not according to the proper method.
Gīta Bhāshya 9.23
While there are various methods of worship, the proper method is highlighted.
तर्हि अहं क्रतुः इत्यादि असत्यं इत्यत आह - येऽपीति ॥२३॥
tarhi ahaṁ kratuḥ ityādi asatyaṁ ityata āha - ye'pīti ॥23॥
[तर्हि (tarhi) - Then; अहम् (aham) - I; क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - the sacrificial ritual; इत्यादि (ityādi) - and so on; असत्यं (asatyaṁ) - untruth; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - says; येऽपीति (ye'pi iti) - even they (also).]
Does that mean the earlier statements stating I am the 'kratu', i.e. doer, etc, - are they false? Question is answered by 'ye-pi' verse.
Gīta Tātparya 9.23
Bhagavata dharma involving non relience on other deities, the intense devotion to lord Vishnu, absence of desire, and constant practice is the most superior. Hence all worships to other deities starting from lord Brahma must be performed recognising them to be Vaishnawas, i.e. devotees of lord Vishnu. Worship must be with proper knowledge of the qualities, attributes and devotion.
"अनन्यदेवतायागाद् भक्त्युद्रेकादकामनात्। सदा योगाच्च वैशिष्ट्यं त्रैविद्याद् वैष्णवादपि॥ स्यादि्ध भागवतस्यैव तेन ब्रह्मादयोऽखिलाः। अश्वमेधादिभिर्यज्ञैरपि केशवयाजिनः। वैष्णवा इति बुद्ध्यैव मानयन्त्यन्यदेवताः॥"
"ananyadevatāyāgād bhaktyudrekādakāmanāt। sadā yogācca vaiśiṣṭyaṁ traividyād vaiṣṇavādapi॥ syādidha bhāgavatasyaiva tena brahmādayo'khilāḥ। aśvamedhādibhiryajñairapi keśavayājinaḥ। vaiṣṇavā iti buddhyaiva mānayantyanyadevatāḥ॥"
[अनन्य-देवत-त्यागात् (ananya-devata-tyāgāt) - Due to the giving up relience on other deities; भक्ति-उद्रेकात् (bhakti-udrekāt) - due to the intensity of devotion; अकामनात् (akāmanāt) - due to the absence of desire (for fruit); सदा-योगात् (sadā-yogāt) - due to constant union (with the Lord); च (ca) - and; वैशिष्ट्यम् (vaiśiṣṭyam) - distinction or superiority; त्रैविद्यात् (traividyāt) - over the followers of the three Vedas; वैष्णवात् अपि (vaiṣṇavāt api) - even over (ordinary) Vaiṣṇavas; स्यात् (syāt) - there may be; इद्धि (iddhi) - indeed (emphatic particle); भागवतस्य एव (bhāgavatasya eva) - only of the Bhāgavata (exclusive devotee of Bhagavān); तेन (tena) - by him; ब्रह्मादयः अखिलाः (brahmādayaḥ akhilāḥ) - all beings beginning with Brahmā; अश्वमेध-आदिभिः यज्ञैः अपि (aśvamedha-ādibhiḥ yajñaiḥ api) - even by sacrifices such as the Aśvamedha; केशव-याजिनः (keśava-yājinaḥ) - those who offer to Keśava; वैष्णवाः इति बुद्ध्या एव (vaiṣṇavāḥ iti buddhyā eva) - only with the understanding that they are Vaiṣṇavas; मानयन्ति (mānayanti) - they honor; अन्य-देवताः (anya-devatāḥ) - the other deities;]
"The Bhāgavata dharma is superior and special because of - giving up relience on other deities, the intensity of devotion, absence of desire, and constant practice, even to the Vaiṣṇava rooted in the three Vedas. Hence, all beings beginning from Brahmā, when performing sacrifices like the Aśvamedha for Keśava, honor other deities only with the understanding that they are Vaiṣṇavas."
