B.G 2.49
दूरेण ह्यवरं कर्म बुद्धियोगाद्धनञ्जय। बुद्धौ शरणमन्विच्छ कृपणाः फलहेतवः ॥२-४९॥
dūreṇa hyavaraṃ karma buddhiyogāddhanañjaya। buddhau śaraṇamanviccha kṛpaṇāḥ phalahetavaḥ ॥2-49॥
[दूरेण (dūreṇa) - by far; हि (hi) - indeed; अवरम् (avaram) - inferior; कर्म (karma) - action; बुद्धियोगात् (buddhiyogāt) - than the yoga of wisdom; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya; बुद्धौ (buddhau) - in wisdom; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; अन्विच्छ (anviccha) - seek; कृपणाः (kṛpaṇāḥ) - miserly; फलहेतवः (phalahetavaḥ) - those who seek fruits;]
(O Dhananjaya, action is indeed far inferior to the yoga of wisdom. Seek refuge in wisdom; those who seek rewards are pitiable.)
O Dhananjya, certainly gap is significant between inferior action and the Buddhi-Yōga, the solution that is of the characteristic of knowledge. Strive to surrender yourself to such wisdom consciousness. Narrow minded are those who seek to cause outcomes.
Gīta Bhāshya 2.49
One must adopt the 'Buddhi-Yōga', the solution that is of the characteristic of knowledge.
इतश्च योगाय युज्यस्व इत्याह– 'दूरेण' इति । बुदि्धयोगात् ज्ञानलक्षणात् उपायात्। दूरेण अतीव। अतो बुद्धौ शरणं ज्ञाने स्थितिम्। फलं कर्मकृतौ हेतुः एषां ते फलहेतवः ॥४९॥
itaśca yogāya yujyasva ityāha– 'dūreṇa' iti । budidhiyogāt jñānalakṣaṇāt upāyāt। dūreṇa atīva। ato buddhau śaraṇaṃ jñāne sthitim। phalaṃ karmakṛtau hetuḥ eṣāṃ te phalahetavaḥ ॥49॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; च (ca) - and; योगाय (yogāya) - for yoga; युज्यस्व (yujyasva) - engage; इत्याह (ityāha) - thus said; दूरेण (dūreṇa) - by far; इति (iti) - thus; बुदि्धयोगात् (budidhiyogāt) - from the yoga of wisdom; ज्ञानलक्षणात् (jñānalakṣaṇāt) - from the characteristic of knowledge; उपायात् (upāyāt) - from the means; दूरेण (dūreṇa) - by far; अतीव (atīva) - extremely; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; बुद्धौ (buddhau) - in wisdom; शरणं (śaraṇaṃ) - refuge; ज्ञाने (jñāne) - in knowledge; स्थितिम् (sthitim) - state; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; कर्मकृतौ (karmakṛtau) - in the doer of actions; हेतुः (hetuḥ) - cause; एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; ते (te) - they; फलहेतवः (phalahetavaḥ) - causes of fruits;]
(From this point, engage in yoga as it is said: 'by far'. Through the yoga of wisdom and the characteristic of knowledge, by far and extremely. Therefore, take refuge in wisdom and establish yourself in knowledge. The fruit is the cause in the doer of actions; these are the causes of the results.)
'Dūrēṇa' verse urges one to practice Yōga. 'Buddhi-yōga' - means one must adopt the Yōga that is of the characteristic of knowledge as the solution. 'durena' - means there is a significant gap (between 'budidhayōgā' and other activities with lower motive). Therefore, 'buddhau śaraṇaṁ', i.e. 'surrender to wisdom', which means situate yourself in intellect. Those who perform actions to cause the outcome are - 'phalahētavaḥ'.
Gīta Tātparya 2.49
'Buddhau Saraṇaṁ' - The knowledgeable continue to maintain a surrendered attitude to lord Vishnu always, even after liberation.
"बुद्धौ जातायामपि विष्णुमेव शरणमन्विच्छ। अज्ञानां ज्ञानिनां चैव मुक्तानां शरणं हरिः। तं ये स्वैक्येन मन्यन्ते सर्वभिन्नं गुणोच्छ्रयात्॥
"buddhau jātāyāmapi viṣṇumeva śaraṇamanviccha। ajñānāṃ jñānināṃ caiva muktānāṃ śaraṇaṃ hariḥ। taṃ ye svaikyena manyante sarvabhinnaṃ guṇocchrayāt॥
[बुद्धौ (buddhau) - in the intellect; जातायाम् (jātāyām) - when arisen; अपि (api) - even; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Vishnu; एव (eva) - only; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; अन्विच्छ (anviccha) - seek; अज्ञानाम् (ajñānām) - of the ignorant; ज्ञानिनाम् (jñāninām) - of the wise; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; मुक्तानाम् (muktānām) - of the liberated; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; तम् (tam) - him; ये (ye) - who; स्वैक्येन (svaikyena) - as one with themselves; मन्यन्ते (manyante) - consider; सर्वभिन्नम् (sarvabhinnam) - distinct from all; गुणोच्छ्रयात् (guṇocchrayāt) - due to the qualities;]
(Even when wisdom arises, seek refuge in Vishnu alone. Hari is the refuge for the ignorant, the wise, and the liberated. Those who perceive him as distinct due to qualities, see him as unified with themselves.)
कृपणास्ते तमस्यन्धे निपतन्ति न संशयः। न तेषामुत्थितिः क्वापि नित्यातिशयदुःखिनाम्। गुणभेदविदां विष्णोः भेधाभेदविदामपि। देहकर्मादिषु तथा प्रादुर्भावादिकेपि वा॥
kṛpaṇāste tamasyandhe nipatanti na saṃśayaḥ। na teṣām utthitiḥ kvāpi nityātiśayaduḥkhinām। guṇabhedavidāṃ viṣṇoḥ bhedābhedavidām api। dehakarmādiṣu tathā prādurbhāvādikepi vā॥
[कृपणाः (kṛpaṇāḥ) - miserable ones; ते (te) - they; तमसि (tamasi) - in darkness; अन्धे (andhe) - blind; निपतन्ति (nipatanti) - fall; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; न (na) - not; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; उत्थितिः (utthitiḥ) - rise; क्वापि (kvāpi) - anywhere; नित्य (nitya) - eternally; अतिशय (atiśaya) - excessive; दुःखिनाम् (duḥkhinām) - of the sorrowful; गुण (guṇa) - qualities; भेद (bheda) - difference; विदाम् (vidām) - of those who know; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Vishnu; भेध (bheda) - division; अभेद (abheda) - non-division; विदाम् (vidām) - of those who know; अपि (api) - also; देह (deha) - body; कर्म (karma) - actions; आदिषु (ādiṣu) - and so on; तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रादुर्भाव (prādurbhāva) - manifestation; आदिके (ādike) - and so on; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or;]
(The miserable ones undoubtedly fall blindly into darkness. There is no rise for them anywhere, as they are eternally excessively sorrowful. This applies to those who understand the differences in the qualities of Vishnu, as well as those who comprehend both division and non-division, in terms of body, actions, and manifestations.)
स्वोद्रिक्तानां तदीयानां निन्दां कुर्वन्ति येपि च। सर्वेषामपि चैतेषां गतिरेषा न संशयः॥
svodriktānāṃ tadīyānāṃ nindāṃ kurvanti yepi ca। sarveṣāmapi caiteṣāṃ gatireṣā na saṃśayaḥ॥
[स्वोद्रिक्तानां (svodriktānāṃ) - of those who are arrogant; तदीयानां (tadīyānāṃ) - of those who belong to him; निन्दां (nindāṃ) - criticism; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - do; ये (ye) - who; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; एतेषाम् (eteṣām) - of these; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path; एषा (eṣā) - this; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(There is no doubt that those who are arrogant and those who belong to him also engage in criticism. This is the path for all of them.)
"Even after obtaining the knowledge, they surrender to lord Vishnu only. The ignorant, the wise, and even the liberated surrender to lord Hari only. Those who think they are the same as the lord, who is different from every being because of His highest virtue, such wretched ones fall down to the darkest hell, there is no doubt. There is no liberation for them at any point in time, as they will be in eternal misery. Those who know the differences in the qualities will well know the differences with lord Vishnu, in terms of His body, actions, appearances, and other aspects. Those who are enraged in condemning His followers reach the same result. The end result for such people is always, everywhere, the same, without a doubt."
