Yatipraṇavakalpaḥ (यतिप्रणवकल्पः)
Yatipraṇavakalpa – An Overview
Yatipraṇavakalpa , “The Prescribed Procedure for the Ascetic’s Praṇava,” is Madhvacharya’s concise exposition of the initiation, contemplation and continuing discipline of a yati , or renunciant. Although the work begins with the formal act of renunciation, its principal concern is the knowledge, meditation and commitments that are to govern the ascetic’s life thereafter.
The aspirant renounces worldly attachments, grants freedom from fear to all beings, and approaches a teacher for instruction in Brahman. The teacher then explains Praṇava — Oṃ — its seer, metre, deity and constituent aspects. These are related to different manifestations of the Supreme, including Viśva, Taijasa and Prājña, and to forms of Viṣṇu such as Kṛṣṇa, Rāma, Nṛsiṃha and Varāha. The disciple is then instructed to meditate upon Nārāyaṇa dwelling in the lotus of the heart, radiant beyond comparison and possessing a divine, auspicious form.
Madhva next establishes the doctrinal commitments expected of the renunciant. Viṣṇu is never to be abandoned or regarded as equal or identical to other deities. Even in liberation, the individual does not become identical with Viṣṇu, nor do liberated beings become equal to one another. The hierarchy among beings continues to be recognised, while Viṣṇu remains supreme.
Renunciation therefore does not mark the end of disciplined activity. The ascetic is instructed to worship Hari daily, practise japa and meditation, contemplate himself as the reflection and Janārdana as the original, and continually study Vaiṣṇava scripture. The Vedas, Upaniṣads, Itihāsa, Purāṇas and Pañcarātra are to be understood through the Brahmasūtras.
Yatipraṇavakalpa thus presents the life of renunciation as one of sustained knowledge, devotion and contemplation, culminating in the responsibility to understand and continually teach the supremacy of Viṣṇu.
