abhramaṁ bhaṅgarahitaṁ ajadaṁ vimalaṁ sadā। ānandatīrthaṁ atulaṁ bhajē tāpatrayāpāhaṁ॥
Worship of Anandatheertha, who is always flawless, unobstructed, ardent, and pure, removes all afflictions.
(Translated by Madhukrishna Sudhindra)

  • Sa.Sm 01
yasmin sarvāṇi karmāṇi saṁnyasyādhyātmacetasā। nirāśīrnirmamo yāti paraṁ jayati socyutaḥ॥1॥
One should leave their ego, attachment, and desire for material objects and perform all actions, with devotion, for the sake of the Lord.

  • Sa.Sm 02
smr̥tvā viṣṇuṁ samutthāya kr̥taśauco yathāvidhi। dhautadantaḥ samācamya snānaṁ kuryād vidhānataḥ ॥2॥
Remembering Vishnu, one should wake up and complete morning activities like cleaning oneself, brushing teeth, and taking a bath as per the prescribed methods.
  • Sa.Sm 03
    uddhr̥teti mr̥dālipya dviṣaḍaṣṭaṣaḍakṣaraiḥ। trirnimajyāpyasūktena prokṣayitvā punastataḥ। mr̥dālipya nimajya tristrirjapedaghamarṣaṇam ॥3॥
Reciting uddhr̥tāsivarāheṇa1 hymn; then applying the mud found at the base of 'tulsi' plant to the body immerse yourself into the water three times by chanting twelve-letters2, eight-letter3 and six-letter4 mantras. Then do ācamana5; reciting āpohiṣṭhā6 hymn sprinkle water on the body. Repeat this process again, this time reciting the aghamarṣaṇa7 hymn.
  • Sa.Sm 04
sraṣṭāraṁ sarvalokānāṁ smr̥tvā nārāyaṇaṁ param। yataśvāso nimajyāpsu praṇavenotthitastataḥ। siñcat puruṣasūktena svadehasthaṁ hariṁ smaran ॥4॥
Holding breath, immerse your head into the water and remember Nārāyana, the all-pervading, as described in aghamarshana-sūkta. Recite purusha-sūkta8 and sprinkle water on your head.
  • Sa.Sm 05
vasitvā vāsa ācabhya prokṣyācamya ca mantrataḥ। gāyatryā cāñjaliṁ datvā dhyātvā sūryagataṁ harim ॥5॥
After taking bath, wear dry clothes, do āchamana, sprinkle the water on the body by reciting āpohiṣṭhā. Purify the water by reciting ‘sūryascha māmanyuscha’9 and drink. Remember Hari, the destroyer of sin, embedded in the Sun god reciting gayatri-mantra10 and give the water offering (argya11) three times.
  • Sa.Sm 06
mantrataḥ parivr̥tyātha samācamya surādikān। tarpayitvā nipīḍyātha vāso vistr̥tya cāñjasā ॥6॥
Sprinkle water around you by reciting ‘āsavādityo-brahma’12, do āchamana, give food (tarpana13), and wash the clothes that were kept on the eastern side.
  • Sa.Sm 07
arkamaṇḍalagaṁ viṣṇuṁ dhyātvaiva tripadīṁ japet। sahasraparamāṁ devīṁ śatamadhyāṁ daśāvarām ॥7॥
Remember Vishnu, who is present in the solar disk as indicated by gayatri-mantra, by chanting ‘dhyēya-sada’14 hymn. Meditate on gayatri thousand or hundred or at least ten times.
  • Sa.Sm 08
āsūryadarśanāttiṣṭhettatastūpaviśeta vā। pūrvāṁ sandhyāṁ sanakṣatrāmuttarāṁ sadivākarām। uttarāmupaviśyaiva vāgyataḥ sarvadā japet ॥8॥
Meditate Gayatri standing until the Sun rises. After the Sun rises, one can sit. Do the morning Sandhya-vandan when stars are present in the sky, evening Sandhya-vandan when the Sun is present. Maintain silence while performing Sayam-sandhya.
  • Sa.Sm 09
dhyeyaḥ sadā savitr̥maṇḍalamadhyavartī nārāyaṇaḥ sarasijāsanasanniviṣṭaḥ। keyūravān makarakuṇḍalavān kirīṭī hārī hiraṇmayavapurdhr̥taśaṅkhacakraḥ ॥9॥
Meditate always on Lord Narayana, who is at the centre of the solar disk seated in lotus posture15. He is wearing bracelets on the upper arm, earrings shaped like a crocodile, a crown, and a garland. He has a body with golden effulgence and holding a conch and a disk.
  • Sa.Sm 10
gāyatryāstriguṇaṁ viṣṇuṁ dhyāyannaṣṭākṣaraṁ japet। praṇamya devānviprāṁśca gurūṁśca haripārṣadān। evaṁ sarvottamaṁ viṣṇuṁ dhyāyannevārcayeddharim ॥10॥
After Gayatri meditation, meditate on lord Vishnu with an eight-letter mantra, repeating it three times that of Gayatri. After the meditation, remember the devas, guardians of eight directions, brahmins, gurus, parents, and other devotees of Vishnu. One should worship lord Vishnu as the most superior principle above all else.

  • Sa.Sm 11
dhyānapravacanābhyāṁ ca yathāyogyamupāsanam। dharmeṇejyāsādhanāni sādhayitvā vidhānataḥ। snātvā sampūjayedviṣṇuṁ vedatantroktamārgataḥ ॥11॥
One should serve God according to one’s ability by remembering him, by talking about him, by acquiring material wealth in a righteous way, as per dharma. Take a bath in the afternoon and worship lord Vishnu as instructed by Vedic-tantras.

  • Sa.Sm 12
vaiśvadevaṁ baliṁ caiva kuryānnityaṁ tadarpaṇam। iṣṭaṁ dattaṁ hutaṁ japtaṁ pūrtaṁ yaccātmanaḥ priyam। dārānsusānpriyānprāṇān parasmai sannivedayen ॥12॥
Perform the offerings to universal gods (Vaishadeva) and cleansing of directions (Baliharana) every day with faith. Offer the items that are dear, given, offered, muttered, rewarded, including all those that are dear: the wife, children, and even one’s own life itself, in His service.
  • Sa.Sm 13
bhuktaśeṣaṁ bhagavato bhr̥tyātithipurassaraḥ। bhuñjīta hr̥dgataṁ viṣṇuṁ smaraṁstadgatamānasaḥ। ācamya mūlamantreṇa koṣṭhaṁ svamabhimantrayet ॥13॥
Give the offered food to guests. Then, eat food thinking of satisfied lord Vishnu. Conclude eating the food by doing 'āchamana' and chanting the eight-letter mantra.

  • Sa.Sm 14
vedaśāstravinodena prīṇayan puruṣottamam। ahaḥśeṣaṁ nayetsandhyāmupāsītātha pūrvavat ॥14॥
Satisfy Purushottama, the supreme being, by spending time in study, teaching, discussing Vedas, and Vedanta shastras. Perform evening Sandhya-vandana before sunset.

  • Sa.Sm 15
yāmātparata evātha svapeddhyāyan janārdanam। antarāle tato buddhvā smareta bahuśo harim ॥15॥
Sleep thinking about Janardhana, the protector of people, at a quarter day past night. If you get up in between, remember Hari repeatedly.

  • Sa.Sm 16
kāyena vācā manasendriyairvā buddhyātmanā vānusr̥tassvabhāvam। karoti yadyatsakalaṁ parasmai nārāyaṇāyeti samarpayettat ॥16॥
The being should offer whatever they do with body, speech, senses, mind, intelligence, and innate nature to Narayana, the all-pervading one.
  • Sa.Sm 17
dvāvimau puruṣau loke kṣaraścākṣara eva ca। kṣaraḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni kūṭasthokṣara ucyate ॥17॥
In the everlasting society of beings there are two principles, kshara, the perishable, and akshara, the non-perishable. All beings are classified as ‘kshara’. ‘Akshara’ is that insentient, originator of everything, unchanging, standing in multitude, without destruction.
  • Sa.Sm 18
uttamaḥ puruṣastvanyaḥ paramātmetyudāhr̥taḥ। yo lokatrayamāviśya bibhartyavyaya īśvaraḥ ॥18॥
There is a supreme purusha who is different from these (ksara and akshara), called the ‘paramatma’, the most superior essence. He is pervading the three worlds, is the supporter of everything, and is the owner of all.
  • Sa.Sm 19
yasmātkṣaramatītohamakṣarādapi cottamaḥ। atosmi loke vede ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ॥19॥
He is above the sentient (kshara) principle and is superior to the insentient (akshara) as well. Hence, he is famous in the human world and in the Vedas as ‘purushottama’, the most superior being.
  • Sa.Sm 20
yo māmevamasammūḍho jānāti puruṣottamam। sa sarvavidbhajati māṁ sarvabhāvena bhārata॥ 20॥
Oh Bharata, the resident of India, one who has faith in what is being said will understand ‘purushothama’, the supreme being, worships him with devotion, by all means, and in all aspects.
  • Sa.Sm 21
iti guhyatamaṁ śāstramidamuktaṁ mayānagha। etadbuddhvā budidhamānsyātkr̥takr̥tyaśca bhārata ॥21॥
Oh Bharata, the resident of India, this is a secret knowledge told by me. One who understands this is a person with wisdom and gets liberated.
  • Sa.Sm 22
rudraṁ samāśritā devā rudro brahmāṇamāśritaḥ। brahmā māmāśrito nityaṁ nāhaṁ kañcidupāśritaḥ ॥ 22॥
All the time, continuously, all devas depend on Rudra; Rudra depends on Brahma; Brahma depends on me. I depend on none.
  • Sa.Sm 23
ye me matamidaṁ nityamanutiṣṭhanti mānavāḥ। śraddhāvantonasūyanto mucyante tepi karmabhiḥ ॥23॥
"What is told here is My (God’s) view and is of purpose"–one who thinks so with faith, and practices it daily, with devotion, with no ill feeling, will get liberated from the bondage of karma.
  • Sa.Sm 24
ye tvetadabhyasūyanto nānutiṣṭhanti me matam। sarvajñānavimūḍhāṁstānvididha naṣṭānacetasaḥ ॥24॥
One who does not follow the above said teachings with ill feeling; know that they will lose all wisdom and will perish.
  • Sa.Sm 25
dvau bhūtasargau lokesmindaiva āsura eva ca। viṣṇubhaktiparo daivo viparītastathāsuraḥ ॥25॥
In this world, the beings are of two types–'dēva', the divine, and 'asura', the demoniac. Those who worship Vishnu with devotion are divine, and others are demoniac.
  • Sa.Sm 26
smartavyaḥ satataṁ viṣṇurvismartavyo na jātucit। sarve vidhiniṣedhāḥ syuretayoreva kiṅkarāḥ ॥26॥
Always remember Vishnu. Never forget him. Significance of all the discipline and austerities is to remember Him.
  • Sa.Sm 27
dharmo bhavatyadharmopi kr̥to bhaktaistavācyuta। pāpaṁ bhavati dharmopi yo na bhaktaiḥ kr̥to hareḥ ॥27॥
Even if Hari's devotees perform an unrighteous act out of ignorance, it will become righteous, and results in good only. Non devotees of Hari, even if they perform righteous acts, it results in adverse effects.
  • Sa.Sm 28
manmanā bhava madbhakto madyājī māṁ namaskuru। nityaṁ bhavecca manniṣṭho bubhūṣuḥ puruṣassadā ॥28॥
Always keep your mind in Me. Always have devotion to Me. Do every activity with reverence as an offering to Me. By always having a sincere attitude towards Me, one attains the ultimate human goals.

  • Sa.Sm 29
eṣa nityaḥ sadācāro gr̥hiṇo vaninastathā। vaiśvadevaṁ baliṁ dantadhāvanaṁ cāpyr̥te vaṭoḥ ॥29॥
All the above austerities hold good both for active householders ('Gruhastas') and the retired ('Vanaprastas'). Other than vishadēva15, baliharana16 and dantadhamana17, rest of the austerities should be performed by students as well.

  • Sa.Sm 30
evameva yateḥ svīyavittena tu vinā sadā। mūlamantraiḥ sadā snānaṁ viṣṇoreva ca tarpaṇam ॥30॥
Like students, even ascetics with the vow of celibacy should not do vishadēva and baliharana. Apart from these, the ascetics should lead life from things collected without asking. They should take a bath with the root mantra and should give food offering only to Vishnu.
  • Sa.Sm 31
viśeṣo niṣkriyayaterajalāñjalinā tathā। tarpaṇaṁ tu harereva yateranyasya coditam। samiddhōmō vaṭōścaiva smr̥tvā viṣṇuṁ hutāśanē॥31॥
Speciality with ascetics is they lead a life without exertion when it comes to wealth. Hence, they should give offerings to Hari only. The students should do the fire sacrifice with dried twigs of fig tree ('samitu') remembering Vishnu.

  • Sa.Sm 32
sarvavarṇāśramairviṣṇureka evejyate sadā। ramābrahmādayastasya parivārata eva tu ॥32॥
People belonging to all the occupations and phases of life should worship Vishnu as he is the supreme personality. Rama, the insentient principle, Brahma, the creator principle, and other gods should be worshipped as members of Vishnu’s family only.
  • Sa.Sm 33
kaviṁ purāṇamanuśāsitāram aṇoraṇīyāṁsamanusmared yaḥ। sarvasya dhātāramacintyarūpam ādityavarṇaṁ tamasaḥ parastāt ॥33॥
One who worships Him as: the all-knowing, ever-new, subtlest of the subtle, regulator of universe, one who wears everything, having an inconceivable form, one who is of the colour of Sun; that being will get liberated from the lower ignorant regions.
  • Sa.Sm 34
vedāhametaṁ puruṣaṁ mahāntaṁ ādityavarṇaṁ tamasastu pāre। sarvāṇi rūpāṇi vicintya dhīraḥ nāmāni kr̥tvābhivadan yadāste॥ 34॥
I know such a supreme personality, who has the effulgence like that of the sun, who is beyond the region of ignorance, who is the giver of name and form to all entities, who is brave and above the modes of nature.
  • Sa.Sm 35
dhātā purastādyamudājahāra śakraḥ pravidvānpradiśaścatasraḥ। tamevaṁ vidvānamr̥ta iha bhavati nānyaḥ panthā ayanāya vidyate ॥35॥
Brahma worshipped Him as supreme at the beginning of creation, similarly Indra described him as supreme later. One must directly realise such a supreme being with all auspicious attributes. Only such persons get liberated. There is no other way for liberation.
  • Sa.Sm 36
    ānandatīrthamuninā vyāsavākyasamuddhr̥tiḥ। sadācārasya viṣaye kr̥tā saṅkṣepataḥ śubhā॥ 36॥
Monk Anandatheertha compiled this brief description of virtuous conduct by selecting quotes from Vyasa's writings, and it brings welfare.
  • Sa.Sm 37
    aśeṣakalyāṇaguṇanityānubhavasattanuḥ। aśeṣadoṣarahitaḥ prīyatāṁ puruṣottamaḥ ॥37॥
Let that supreme personality with infinite auspicious attributes, one who has everlasting experience as his body, one who is devoid of all impurities, be satisfied with my work.
