sūtaḥ - jñātvā vipraistithiṁ samyag daivajñaiḥ samudīritām। kartavya upavāsastu hyanyathā narakaṁ vrajēt ॥156॥
Sage Sûtha said: identifying êkâdashi as prescribed by an authorized astrologer. One should observe fasting on that day. Otherwise, one will go to hell.

kṣayē vāpyathavā vr̥ddhau samprāptē vā dinakṣayē। upōṣyā dvādaśī puṇyā pūrvaviddhāṁ parityajēt ॥157॥
If there is a reduction or expansion of êkadashi event, or if it is joined by adjoining events, then fasting on “dwadashi” (next day) is advised. One should leave êkadashi that is with "dashami".
  • Kri.M 158
pūrvaviddhāṁ prakurvāṇō narō dharmān nikr̥ntati। santatēstu vināśāya sampadō haraṇāya ca ॥158॥
If one performs 'êkadashi' that is linked with 'dashami', results of his good deeds reduce. It also results in a decline of race and property.
  • Kri.M 159
kalāvēdhē tu viprēndra daśamyaikādaśīṁ tyajēt। surāyā bindunā spr̥ṣṭaṁ gaṅgāmbha iva santyajēt ॥159॥
O Brahmin! Just as one avoids Ganga water when it is mixed with even a drop of alcohol, in the same way one should leave 'êkadashi' that is touched by 'dashami'.
  • Kri.M 160
śvadr̥tau pañcagavyaṁ ca daśamyā dūṣitāṁ tyajēt। ēkādaśīṁ dvijaśrēṣṭhāḥ pakṣayōrubhayōrapi ॥160॥
O Great Brahmin! Just like you avoid “panchagavya” that is present in dog’s skin, one should not fast on 'êkadashi' that is linked with 'dashami' irrespective of whether it is a full moon or new moon.
  • Kri.M 161
tasmādviprā na viddhā hi kartavyaikādaśī kvacit। viddhā hanti purāpuṇyaṁ śrāddhaṁ ca vr̥ṣalīpatiḥ ॥161॥
O Brahmin! One should never fast on 'êkadashi' that is with 'dashami'. A Brahmin who is not pure destroys the ancestral ceremony. In the same way, fasting on 'êkadashi' linked with 'dashmi' destroys results of good deeds.
  • Kri.M 162
japtaṁ dattaṁ hutaṁ snātaṁ tathā pūjā kr̥tā harēḥ। tatsarvaṁ vilayaṁ yāti tamaḥ sūryōdayē yathā ॥162॥
The way darkness is removed by the rising sun, 'êkadashi' with 'dashami' reduces the results obtained by meditation, charity, sacrifice and worship.
  • Kri.M 163
ēkādaśyāṁ yadā brahman dinakṣayatithirbhavēt। upōṣyā dvādaśī tatra trayōdaśyāṁ tu pāraṇam ॥163॥
O Brahmin! If on the day of 'êkadashi', adjoining days are linked, then one should perform fasting on 'dwadashi', and should take food on 'trayôdashi'.
  • Kri.M 164
pratipatprabhr̥tayaḥ sarvā udayādudayādravēḥ। sampūrṇā iti vijñēyā harivāsaravarjitāḥ ॥164॥
All other days other than 'êkadashi', one should consider the day from the previous day's sunrise to the next day’s sunrise. 'Êkadashi' is an exception.
  • Kri.M 165
aruṇōdayakālē tu daśamī yadi dr̥śyatē। na tatraikādaśī kāryā dharmakāmārthanāśinī ॥165॥
If at the early morning of 'êkadashi' there is 'dashami', then fasting on such 'êkadashi' results in sin.
  • Kri.M 166
aruṇōdayavēlāyāṁ daśamī yadi dr̥śyatē। pāpamūlaṁ tadā jñēyamēkādaśyupavāsanam ॥166॥
If at arunôdaya there is 'dashami' and later there is 'êkadashi', one should not fast. Fasting on that day destroys the righteousness, wealth, and one's ambition.
  • Kri.M 167
catasrō ghaṭikāḥ prātararuṇōdaya ucyatē। yatīnāṁ snānakālōyaṁ gaṅgāmbhaḥsadr̥śaṁ jalam ॥167॥
Four moments before sunrise are known as 'arunôdaya'. This time is as pure as the water of river Ganga. This is suitable for saints to take a bath.

udayātprāktrighaṭikāvyāpinyaikādaśī yadā। sandigdhaikādaśī nāma varjyā dharmārthakāṁikṣabhiḥ ॥169॥
If three moments before sunrise 'êkadashi' is present, it is called Sandhigdha êkadashi. One should undertake fasting on that day as non fasting destroys righteousness and wealth.
  • Kri.M 170
putrapautravivaddhyarthaṁ dvādaśyāmupavāsayēt। tatra kratuśataṁ puṇyaṁ trayōdaśyāṁ tu pāraṇam ॥170॥
During “sandhighaikadashi”, for the progress of children and grandchildren, one should fast on 'dwadashi' as well and take food on 'triôdashi'. It is equal to the results of hundreds of sacrifices.
  • Kri.M 171
udayātprāg dvighaṭikāvyāpinyaikādaśī yadā। saṅkīrṇaikādaśī nāma varjyā dharmārthakāṁikṣabhiḥ ॥171॥
If two moments before sunrise 'êkadashi' is present, it is called “sankeerna êkadashi”. Those who wish righteousness and wealth should not fast on that day.

daśamīśēṣasaṁyuktā gāndhāryā samupōṣitā। tasyāḥ putraśataṁ naṣṭaṁ tasmāttāṁ parivarjayēt ॥172॥
Earlier Gandhari fasted on 'êkadashi', which had parts of 'dashami'. Thus, all her 100 suns died. One should not fast on 'êksdashi' that is mixed with 'dashami'.
  • Kri.M 173

  • Kri.M 174
bahvāgamavirōdhēṣu brāhmaṇēṣu vivādiṣu। upōṣyā dvādaśī tatra trayōdaśyāṁ tu pāraṇam ॥174॥
If there is a conflict with the dates of 'êkadashi' and Brahmins are pondering over the dates of 'êkadashi'- then whether it is a full-moon or new-moon period, it is better to fast on 'dwadashi', and take food on 'triôdashi'.
  • Kri.M 175
ēkādaśyāṁ tu viddhāyāṁ samprāptē śravaṇē tathā। upōṣyā dvādaśī puṇyā pakṣayōrubhayōrapi ॥175॥
If 'êkadashi' is mixed with 'dashami', on 'dwadashi' even if there is 'shravana star' starting in abhijit, irrespective of whether it is full-moon or new-moon, one should fast on 'dwadashi' only.
  • Kri.M 176
uparāgasahasrāṇi vyatīpātāyutāni ca। amālakṣaṁ tu dvādaśyāḥ kalāṁ nārhanti ṣōḍaśīm ॥176॥
Thousands of eclipses, ten thousands of 'vyati-patâs', one lakh new-moon are not equal to 1\16th of 'dwadashi'.
  • Kri.M 177

If 'triôdashi' is mixed with dwadashi, then pure dwadashi is fit for fasting. If dashami is like poison, êkadashi is like amrutha. One should leave êkadashi that is with dashami like poison and should fast on êkadashi that is like amrutha.
  • Kri.M 178
dvādaśyāṁ bhōjanaṁ caiva viddhāyāṁ haryupōṣaṇam। yaḥ kuryānmandabudidhatvānnirayaṁ sōdhigacchati ॥178॥

Those statements that prescribe fasting on 'êkadashi' mixed with 'dashami' are superficial statements stated for material gains. Fasting on such a day is not dear to Lord Hari.
  • Kri.M 180
athavā mōhanārthāya mōhinyā bhagavān hariḥ। arthitaḥ kārayāmāsa vyāsarūpī janārdanaḥ ॥180॥
Lord Hari who is complete with auspicious qualities and who protects the universe in the form of Lord Vêdavyasa, made such statements in puranas to mesmerize wicked being prayed by Ukmangadha’s wife Môhini.

There should be an increase in the worship of demigods that grant material gains. The wealth of wicked people should be destroyed, the ignorance of demons should increase, their number should increase. Transcendental knowledge of the God should not be revealed to them.
  • Kri.M 182
ēvaṁ viddhāṁ parityajya dvādaśyāmupavāsayēt। kōṭijanmārjitaṁ pāpamēkayaiva vinaśyati ॥182॥
