न प्राणेन नापानेन मर्त्यो जीवति कश्चन। इतरेण तु जीवन्ति यस्मिन्नेतावुपाश्रितौ ॥५॥
na prāṇena nāpānena martyo jīvati kaścana। itareṇa tu jīvanti yasminnetāvupāśritau ॥5॥
[न (na) - not; प्राणेन (prāṇena) - by breath; न (na) - not; अपानेन (apānena) - by exhalation; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; इतरेण (itareṇa) - by another; तु (tu) - but; जीवन्ति (jīvanti) - live; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; एतौ (etau) - these two; उपाश्रितौ (upāśritau) - are dependent;]
No one lives by breath or exhalation; rather, they live by something else on which both depend.
Bhāṣya 2.2.05
The life-force (prāṇa) is not merely the sustainer of living beings; rather, it supports them by relying on the Lord Vishnu. Hence, Lord Vishnu, the independent, is the ultimate refuge for all living beings.
न केवलं प्राण एव चेतनानां विधारकः। किन्तु विष्णुं समाश्रित्य प्राणो जीवान् बिभर्त्ययम्। अतो मुख्याश्रयो विष्णुः चेतनानां स्वतन्त्रतः ॥३-५॥
na kevalaṁ prāṇa eva cetanānāṁ vidhārakaḥ। kintu viṣṇuṁ samāśritya prāṇo jīvān bibhartyayam। ato mukhyāśrayo viṣṇuḥ cetanānāṁ svatantrataḥ ॥3-5॥
