Jayantī Nirṇaya – An Overview
Jayantī Nirṇaya , “The Determination of Jayantī,” is Madhvacharya’s concise exposition of the determination and observance of Kṛṣṇa Jayantī. In sixteen verses, the work moves from identifying the sacred occasion to prescribing the principal practices through which it is to be observed.
Madhva defines Jayantī as the occasion when Kālāṣṭamī , the eighth lunar day, occurs at midnight in conjunction with the Rohiṇī nakṣatra. Its sanctity derives from the birth of Hari at that time. Significantly, Madhva describes him as aja , “the unborn,” even while speaking of his birth, thereby distinguishing the divine manifestation of Kṛṣṇa from the ordinary birth of embodied beings. Because of this association with Hari, the day is regarded as exceptionally sacred and the observance of fasting is strongly enjoined.
The succeeding verses describe the discipline of the day. The devotee performs purification and bathing, completes the prescribed daily religious duties while remembering Bhagavān, and again bathes at midday and evening with remembrance of Vāsudeva. Worship is then performed with devotion and concentration. Kṛṣṇa occupies the centre of the observance, accompanied by Balabhadra, Vasudeva, Devakī, Nandagopa, Yaśodā and Subhadrā.
The arghya offered to Kṛṣṇa recalls the purposes of his manifestation: the destruction of Kaṃsa and other hostile powers, the removal of the burden of the earth, the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas and the establishment of dharma . The Moon, associated with Rohiṇī, is also honoured with a separate arghya and prayer.
The observance concludes with disciplined rest, the following day’s regular duties, charity according to one’s capacity, and pāraṇa , the ceremonial completion of the fast. Jayantī Nirṇaya thus combines calendrical determination, remembrance, fasting, worship and charity into an integrated commemoration of the manifestation of Kṛṣṇa.
