संङ्कल्प (saṅkalpa) - intention; प्रभवान् (prabhavān) - arising from; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - without a residue; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; एव (eva) - indeed; इन्द्रियग्रामं (indriyagrāmaṁ) - the group of senses; विनियम्य (viniyamya) - controlling; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - gradually; उपरमेत् (uparamet) - should withdraw; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with the help of intelligence; धृतिगृहीतया (dhṛtigṛhītayā) - held by firmness; आत्मसंस्थं (ātmasaṁsthaṁ) - established in the Lord; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अपि (api) - even / certainly; चिन्तयेत् (cintayet) - should think;]
Having abandoned all desires arising from intentions without a residue; controlling the group of senses with the mind, indeed from all sides; gradually, slowly, one should withdraw with the help of firm intelligence. Having made the mind established in the Lord, one should certainly not think of anything else.
Gīta Bhāshya 6.24 and 25
'sarvān' - all topics; 'aśeṣataḥ' - Even on a single topic, a small amount of desire should not be left at any point in time. The word 'eva' provides exclusivity to control of mind as a means. The control of the mind and delighting in the lord within are the causes for such an intelligence.
sarvān sarvaviṣayān । aśeṣataḥ, ekaviṣayopi kāmaḥ svalpaḥ kādācitkopi na kartavya ityarthaḥ । manasaiva niyantuṁ śakyate nānyenetyevaśabdaḥ ॥24॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - the word 'sarvān'; सर्वविषयान् (sarvaviṣayān) - 'all topics'; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - The word 'aśeṣataḥ' indicates; एकविषयः (ekaviṣayaḥ) - even a single topic; अपि (api) - also; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; स्वल्पः (svalpaḥ) - small; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at any time; कः अपि (kaḥ api) - anyone; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - should be done; इत्यर्थः (ityarthaḥ) - this is the meaning; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; एव (eva) - indeed; नियन्तुं (niyantuṁ) - to control; शक्यते (śakyate) - is possible; न (na) - not; अन्येन (anyena) - by another; इति (iti) - thus; एव शब्दः (eva śabdaḥ) - the word 'eva';]
The word 'sarvān' refers to 'all topics'. The word 'aśeṣataḥ' means 'Even on a single topic, a small amount of desire should not be left at any point in time'. Indeed, it is possible to control only by the mind, not by others. Hence, the word 'eva', i.e. 'only', is used.
बुद्धेः करणत्वं मनोनिग्रहे आत्मरमणे च ॥२५॥
buddheḥ karaṇatvaṁ manonigrahe ātmaramaṇe ca ॥25॥
[बुद्धेः (buddheḥ) - of the intellect; करणत्वं (karaṇatvaṁ) - the causal nature; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; निग्रहे (nigrahe) - in controlling; आत्मरमणे (ātmaramaṇe) - in delighting in the Lord; च (ca) - and/also;]
The cause of such intelligence is because of control of the mind and also delighting in the Lord within.
