In his short work Jayantīnirṇaya , Madhvācārya gives a remarkably precise definition of Jayantī, the sacred occasion commemorating the manifestation of Kṛṣṇa. He does not identify it simply as Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Aṣṭamī, the eighth lunar day of the dark fortnight. Three conditions must come together: it must be Aṣṭamī, the Moon must be associated with Rohiṇī Nakṣatra, and this conjunction must exist at midnight.
What does the night sky actually look like when these three conditions coincide? Modern astronomy allows us to reconstruct the configuration and understand what an observer in Mathurā would see.
Madhva begins Jayantīnirṇaya with the defining condition:
rōhiṇyām ardharātrē tu yadā kālāṣṭamī bhavēt
When Kālāṣṭamī occurs at midnight in Rohiṇī, that occasion is called Jayantī.
The three elements—Aṣṭamī, Rohiṇī and midnight—are astronomical rather than merely conventional calendar labels.
A tithi is determined by the angular separation between the Sun and Moon. During Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Aṣṭamī, the Moon is approximately 84°–96° west of the Sun. Around the middle of the tithi, the separation is therefore close to 90°. Astronomically, this corresponds approximately to the last-quarter phase of the Moon.
This immediately explains something interesting about Madhva's requirement of midnight. A last-quarter Moon naturally rises around midnight. Aṣṭamī and midnight are therefore not two unrelated conditions. The lunar phase itself makes midnight the natural time at which the Moon appears near the eastern horizon.
Madhva adds another requirement: the Moon must be in Rohiṇī.
Rohiṇī is one of the twenty-seven traditional Nakṣatras through which the Moon's movement against the stellar background is measured. It lies in the region of Taurus and is prominently associated with the bright reddish star Aldebaran.
Thus the complete condition becomes much more visually concrete.
On the appropriate night, the observer in Mathurā is not merely looking at an Aṣṭamī Moon. Around midnight, a waning Moon rises in the eastern sky while occupying the stellar region of Rohiṇī.
This also helps us understand a later instruction in Jayantīnirṇaya . Madhva prescribes an arghya after the lunar disc has risen and addresses the Moon as being together with Rohiṇī. The ritual therefore corresponds to an observable celestial event: the devotee can actually look towards the rising Moon in the Rohiṇī region while making the offering.
Using Mathurā, India, at approximately 27.49° N and 77.67° E as the geographical reference, we can reconstruct modern years in which Aṣṭamī and Rohiṇī overlap the midnight period.
The precise altitude changes from one occurrence to another, but the underlying pattern remains recognisable. Around midnight, Rohiṇī is found towards the eastern side of the sky, generally fairly low above the horizon. The Aṣṭamī Moon occupying that region is consequently a rising or recently risen Moon.
The astronomical picture produced by Madhva's prescription can therefore be summarised quite simply:
A waning Aṣṭamī Moon rises around midnight in the Rohiṇī region of the eastern sky.
This is the stable astronomical core of the prescription.
Once this sky is reconstructed using modern astronomical coordinates, another feature becomes visible—one that Madhva does not mention and that should not be attributed to him.
Aldebaran, the prominent star associated with Rohiṇī, lies at approximately galactic longitude 181°. In the coordinate system used to map the Milky Way, longitude 0° points towards the Galactic Centre, while longitude 180° points in the opposite direction, towards the Galactic Anticentre.
Rohiṇī therefore lies remarkably close to the longitude of the Galactic Anticentre.
This does not mean that Rohiṇī itself is the Galactic Anticentre. Aldebaran lies roughly 20° away from the Galactic plane, so the two directions are not identical. Nevertheless, the near correspondence in galactic longitude is an interesting astronomical feature.
For the late-August and early-September occurrences of Jayantī, another striking visual relationship can arise. As the Rohiṇī region and Aṣṭamī Moon emerge in the eastern sky around midnight, the Galactic Centre, situated towards Sagittarius, is approaching or passing below the western horizon.
The result can be an impressive east-west configuration: the Moon in the Rohiṇī direction rising in the east while the direction of the Galactic Centre disappears in the west.
There is no evidence in Jayantīnirṇaya that Madhva intended this Galactic Centre–Anticentre relationship. It is better understood as an interesting observation made possible by modern astronomical reconstruction.
It is equally important to identify what the configuration does not imply.
The Earth's rotational axis does not acquire any special orientation on Jayantī. It continues to point approximately towards the north celestial pole, presently close to Polaris. Its direction changes only very slowly through axial precession over thousands of years.
Nor is there evidence that the Jayantī configuration produces an unusual gravitational, electromagnetic or other physical effect upon the Earth.
The distinctive feature lies instead in the geometry of the Sun, Moon, Earth and stellar background .
Aṣṭamī determines the approximate Sun–Moon angular relationship. Rohiṇī determines the stellar region occupied by the Moon. Midnight determines the observer's orientation on the rotating Earth. Together they produce a particular observable night sky.
This astronomical perspective gives Madhva's prescription an interesting concreteness.
Jayantī is not simply a numbered day recurring annually on a calendar. Its determination depends upon the relationship between the Earth, Moon, Sun and stars. The correct moment has to be recognised from their relative positions.
The ritual observance then follows that celestial configuration. The devotee fasts and maintains discipline through the day. At night, Kṛṣṇa is worshipped and remembered as the one who manifested for the destruction of Kaṃsa, the removal of the burden of the earth, the destruction of the Kauravas and Daityas, the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas and the establishment of Dharma. When the Moon associated with Rohiṇī has risen, arghya is offered.
The physical sky and the religious observance thus meet at a particular moment.
This may be the most interesting feature of Madhva's prescription. Whatever further significance one may attach to the astronomical configuration, the text itself does something very precise: it binds the remembrance of Kṛṣṇa's manifestation to a reproducible relationship of lunar phase, stellar position and time of night.
The devotee does not merely remember an event.
He waits for its sky.
